It might have been a combination of things from my experiences. This was an American crocodile which has a typical temperament that's different from the African species you usually see on nature shows. They can be extremely dangerous of course, just not as aggressive.
I raised alligators and learned that they are intelligent. We formed a bond and so did many others, especially my Dad seeing George as a pet. My shows never put others at risk though. I treated them as having the potential for unpredictability and no safety rules broken around the public, so no mishaps.
I did take my shows on the road. It was hard work, but loved it!
