1) loaded a usb drive with 23.10 just in case
2) used same to ..mmm.. resurrect an ooooold
Gigabyte GB 4200 'brick' .
If ya'll hear of a mushroom cloud on the news in central Ca,
not to worry its just the Gigabyte --- LOL.

For a computer that old, try puppy Linux. Or Bunsen Labs. Both are designed with the intent to bring modern functionality to older computers. Puppy takes less resources but is uglier than homemade sin. Bunsen Labs is prettier but needs a bit more RAM than puppy.
And if $150 is too much then look at your nearby donation stores like GoodWill where you can find electronics for dirt cheap.

I dunno... That first one is not much better than the old box he's tinkering with now, and the second one has too many questions like RAM and hard drive. Why can they not ascertain those?
Besides, there's something fun about finding a use for old tech. One factory where I worked, I saw an old Windows 98 box running a dot matrix machine for stenciling part numbers on metal tubes. I knew whoever owned that place, he knew something about computers and how to make full use of them.
Besides, why spend more money when you can get a free operating system that will make good use of the old computer you already have? I wouldn't recommend it for everybody, but he already knows how to use Linux distros.

The brick is my 2nd machine ,been knocking around my place for some years.
I bought it to experiment with Python --- so if i wiped anything
or the magic smoke came out of the box it would not be a great loss.
Still have not got the sound issue figured out on the desktop ?
all the 3.5mm rear jacks and functions (aux in, line out, mic,)
worked fine and synchronous with win 10,
now line out shows signal but no sound from speakers with linux.
Speaker static test is fine-- been all through alsamixer and set levels to max,

Just try different distros from the live trial version before you install. If everything works, THEN install that one and use it.
I swear that's what a lot of us nerds do. Just try different ones and use what works with this computer.
I just took my ancient ThinkPad t400 to w*rk, running Linux mint from a flash drive install, to download a bit more than 100 GB on the w*rkplace Wi-Fi.
Some of the kids have made fun of how old it looks, but it sure is reliable. Their Walmart laptops can't pick up Wi-Fi signal out in the parking lot like my ThinkPad can.

The old Lenovos are indeed solid builds.
I think that especially after Covid the quality has dropped further in laptop builds because I see higher failure rates on Lenovos, Dells and some HPs but Microsoft Surfaces seem very well build almost like a MacBook Pro.
Price wise, in contrast to how everything doubled or tripled during Covid, the prices on laptops actually got cheaper due to high demand since most worked from home.

Easier to run Windows in a virtual computer inside Linux. Then you can run anything you want without making all those wine bottles.
Not even kidding. Different instances of wine for different programs are called wine bottles.
I'm really into the Linux operating systems. I don't mean that I'm an expert by any means. But it has, for the most part, replaced Windows in my computer life. I think it would be cool to meet more Christian Linux users.
I'm a retired sw engineer. I've used Unix since it was invented. But, last time I developed on a Unix platform (on Solaris) was in the 90s. I tried to keep up with Linux, but I'm not a regular user since I retired. I've used most OS's, Unix was the best!
