Yep, bottomless seems to indicate no bottom, and a pit usually has no top or roof.
Why does the pit have to be in the earth? Personally, I don't believe that it is.

Satan is a spirit being. I believe that the pit he will be in is a spiritual pit, not physical. I could be wrong, but a bottomless physical pit makes no sense to me.
So - the locust creatures that come out of the smoke from the pit fly around stinging humans without having any kind of 'physical' form???
The detailed description of the creatures in Revelation 9 is only referring to 'spiritual' features...???

I don't know. I do know that the spirit being Satan appeared in a physical form in Eden. Angels can also put on human form.
I have discovered that as well - and, generally try to operate by that principle. But, occasionally, an exception will occur.
