God also told Abraham that He would be his reward. The greatest gift God can give is Himself. Seems John 3:16 speaks to this. And I imagine if you ask Abraham now which he prefers, Jesus or Isaac, I feel confident his answer would be Jesus."
Some time later, the LORD spoke to Abram in a vision and said to him, “Do not be afraid, Abram, for I will protect you, and your reward will be great.”
But Abram replied, “O Sovereign LORD, what good are all your blessings when I don’t even have a son? Since you’ve given me no children, Eliezer of Damascus, a servant in my household, will inherit all my wealth. You have given me no descendants of my own, so one of my servants will be my heir.”
Abram's response to GOD's promise was.....thanks, but no thanks, not interested. I want a son, not more rewards. He was pouring out his heart to the LORD.
