You're talking about the water and the blood.
Ezekiel 36:25-26
Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you.A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.
The stony heart is the stone that Moses struck and water came out.I had a heart that was covered with the water,and now he has given me a heart covered in the blood.
Spiritually speaking,if a man or woman are not coming together and becoming one flesh(water and blood) but instead doing the deed solo,you are doing so against the Word of God.That's why masturbation is a sin.Regardless of that person thinking of their loved one while doing so.

Does the following mean it was a sin to do so?
In the old testament?
I am not so sure that the spilling of the spilling of the seed but it could be the reason why.
Genesis 38:8-10
8 And Judah said to Onan, “Go in to your brother’s wife and marry her, and raise up an heir to your brother.” 9 But Onan knew that the heir would not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in to his brother’s wife, that he emitted on the ground, lest he should give an heir to his brother. 10 And the thing which he did displeased the Lord; therefore He killed him also.

38:8 to your brother’s wife: In the ancient Middle East, for a man to die without leaving a son was regarded as an incalculable loss. A person’s memory was preserved in his descendants. In order to maintain the family line and the name of the deceased, a brother or another near relative would marry the man’s widow and father a child that would carry on the man’s family. This is called levirate marriage, from a Latin word meaning “husband’s brother.” The custom became part of the Mosaic Law (Deut. 25:5–10; Ruth 4:1–12).
38:9 emitted on the ground: Because of his own selfishness and wicked attitude toward his deceased brother, Onan would not allow his brother’s widow to conceive a child. He feared the child would perpetuate the name of his brother Er and not his own.

On earth as it is in heaven.My genes that came from my parents became one flesh that resulted in me, by my father and a mother coming together and being one flesh.You are given a heart of flesh after the water and blood become one.The bride and groom become one flesh.

The Lord declares that all first born's are his.He's made a way for us not only in our physical birth, but also our spiritual birth through the water and the blood.

Is using birth control a sin in your estimation? Or having sex with your spouse with a zero chance of conception? Is it impossible to become one flesh with your spouse under these circumstances, having sex without a chance of pregnancy?
Not at all clear to me, even though I have been reading the bible over 50 years, if masturbation is a sin or not. Could be or maybe not, but God's grace is sufficient regardless. Jesus understands the human condition quite well, and rather dealing with us fairly, is full of mercy and compassion.

I wasn't getting at that a man and woman getting together is only for procreation. I'm talking about masturbation being the sin.Even if they're thinking of their loved one.
God sets aside himself a remnant.Your 5 children.The seed that beats out all the others to get to the egg.Laying down with your loved one doesn't always result in children.All first borns are his, and our bodies are made in the image of the Ark of the Covenant.So you are placing an offering on the alter.

Love has nothing to do with it. Lust is the same as the sin of adultery, because the wife belongs to another man. It is similar to coveting, but while coveting relates to another man's possessions, adultery relates to lying with another man's wife. King David may have loved Bathsheba, but it was adultery when he took her because she was Uriah's wife. It was lust when he looked at her with desire, because she was Uriah's wife. How well or how poorly he did or didn't treat her has nothing to do with his sin - she was another man's wife, and he treated her as his own. That is the sin.
