That is false. In Acts 10:45-46 we read that the gift of the Holy Spirit (compare with Acts 2:38 - the gift of the Holy Spirit) had been poured out on the Gentiles also. For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. They clearly received the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and only those who receive the indwelling of the Holy Spirit can receive a spiritual gift, which is ONLY for the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12) and in this case it was the spiritual gift of tongues.
In Acts 11:17, we read - If therefore God gave them the same gift (Holy Spirit) as He gave us when we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could withstand God?”
In 1 Corinthians 12:13, we read - For by one Spirit we were ALL baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.
Ephesians 1:13 - In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise.
Dear Mailmandan,
First of all, I appreciate the trouble that you went to in explaining your understanding of what happened to the household of Cornelius.
I apologize for the length of my answer, but I could not present the facts in any other way.
Acts 10:44-45 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were listening to the message. 45 All the circumcised believers who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also.
COMMENT: This is the baptism of the Holy Spirit, not the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. How do we know. Notice below.
Acts 10:46-48 For they were hearing them speaking with tongues and exalting God. Then Peter answered, 47 "Surely no one can refuse the water for these to be baptized
WHO HAVE RECEIVED THE HOLY SPIRIT just as
WE did, can he?" 48 And he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay on for a few days.
COMMENT: Peter compares what has happened to Cornelius and his household to what happened to himself and other “
WE”.
Now look down in Acts 11.
Acts 11:1-18 Now the apostles and the brethren who were throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God. 2 And when Peter came up to Jerusalem,
THOSE WHO WERE CIRCUMCISED TOOK ISSUE WITH HIM, 3 saying, "You went to uncircumcised men and ate with them." 4 But Peter began speaking and proceeded to explain to them in orderly sequence, saying, 5 "I was in the city of Joppa praying; and in a trance I saw a vision, an object coming down like a great sheet lowered by four corners from the sky; and it came right down to me, 6 and when I had fixed my gaze on it and was observing it I saw the four-footed animals of the earth and the wild beasts and the crawling creatures and the birds of the air. 7 "I also heard a voice saying to me, 'Get up, Peter; kill and eat.' 8 "But I said, 'By no means, Lord, for nothing unholy or unclean has ever entered my mouth.' 9 "But a voice from heaven answered a second time, 'What God has cleansed, no longer consider unholy.' 10 "This happened three times, and everything was drawn back up into the sky. 11 "And behold, at that moment three men appeared at the house in which we were staying, having been sent to me from Caesarea. 12 "The Spirit told me to go with them without misgivings. These six brethren also went with me and we entered the man's house. 13 "And he reported to us how he had seen the angel standing in his house, and saying, 'Send to Joppa and have Simon, who is also called Peter, brought here; 14 and he will speak words to you by which you will be saved, you and all your household.' 15 "And as I began to speak,
THE HOLY SPIRIT FELL UPON THEM JUST AS HE DID UPON US AT THE BEGINNING. 16 "And I remembered the word of the Lord, how He used to say, 'John baptized with water, but
YOU WILL BE BAPTIZED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT.' 17 "Therefore if God gave to them the
SAME GIFT as He gave to US also after believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could stand in God's way?" 18 When they heard this, they quieted down and glorified God, saying, "Well then, God has granted to the Gentiles also the repentance that leads to life."
COMMENT: Here we see Peter back in Jerusalem being confronted by Jews who faulted him for eating with the Gentiles. As we read here, we see that Peter goes over how, in the beginning that he and the apostles were baptized in the Holy Spirit as Christ had promised them in Acts 1 and they would receive power. Look below.
Acts 1:2-8 until the day when He was taken up to heaven, after He had by the Holy Spirit given orders to the apostles whom He had chosen. 3 To these He also presented Himself alive after His suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking of the things concerning the kingdom of God. 4 Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, "Which," He said, "you heard of from Me; 5 for John baptized with water,
BUT YOU WILL BE BAPTIZED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT NOT MANY DAYS FROM NOW." So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, "Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?" 7 He said to them, "It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority; 8
BUT YOU WILL RECEIVE POWER WHEN THE HOLY SPIRIT HAS COME UPON YOU; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth."
COMMENT: Again, this was the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. How do we know that this was not the indwelling of the Holy Spirit? Look At John 14 below.
John 14:15-23 "If you
LOVE Me, you will keep My commandments. 16 "I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; 17 that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him,
BUT YOU KNOW HIM BECAUSE HE ABIDES WITH YOU AND WILL BE IN YOU. 18 "I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 "After a
LITTLE WHILE the world will no longer see Me, but you will see Me; because I live, you will live also. 20
"IN THAT DAY YOU WILL KNOW THAT I AM IN MY FATHER, AND YOU IN ME, AND I IN YOU. 21 "He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who LOVES Me; and he who
LOVES Me will be
LOVED by My Father, and I will
LOVE him and will disclose Myself to him." 22 Judas (not Iscariot) *said to Him, "Lord, what then has happened that You are going to disclose Yourself to us and not to the world?" 23 Jesus answered and said to him, "If anyone
LOVES Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will
LOVE him, and
WE WILL COME TO HIM AND MAKE OUR ABODE WITH HIM.
COMMENT: Now notice what Jesus does to the Apostles in the evening on the day He was resurrected.
John 20:19-22 So when it was EVENING on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and *said to them, "Peace be with you." 20 And when He had said this, He showed them both His hands and His side. The disciples then rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21 So Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you." 22 And when He had said this,
HE BREATHED ON THEM AND *SAID TO THEM, "RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT.
COMMENT: This fulfilled what Jesus had promised the just three days prior before He was crucified. When Jesus said that Spirit would be in them, Romans 8:9-11, is the same thing that Paul spelled out to the Roman Christians.
Romans 8:9-11 However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, IF INDEED THE SPIRIT OF GOD DWELLS IN YOU. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. 10 If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also
GIVE LIFE TO YOUR MORTAL BODIES THROUGH HIS SPIRIT WHO DWELLS IN YOU.
COMMENT: The above tells us why, in Acts 2:41, we find the word:
"ADDED"
Acts 2:41 So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were
ADDED about three thousand souls.
COMMENT: Who were the 3000 added to? It was the apostles who were in the foundation of the church. See Ephesians below.
Ephesians 2:19-22 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God's household, 20
HAVING BEEN BUILT ON THE FOUNDATION OF THE APOSTLES AND PROPHETS, CHRIST JESUS HIMSELF BEING THE CORNER STONE, 21 in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord, 22 in whom you also are being built together into
A DWELLING OF GOD IN THE SPIRIT.
God bless you, Mailmandan,
