Jesus according to Mark 6 was known as a carpenter by people ---
Mark 6 ERV
Jesus Goes to His Hometown
6 Jesus left and went back to his hometown. His followers went with him.
2 On the Sabbath day Jesus taught in the synagogue, and many people heard him. They were amazed and said, “Where did this man get this teaching? How did he get such wisdom? Who gave it to him? And where did he get the power to do miracles?

Isn’t he just the carpenter we know—Mary’s son, the brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And don’t his sisters still live here in town?” So they had a problem accepting him.
MY personal view here
So I would say in his younger days he was his Father's apprentice and learned skills of the trade -----and when of age made a wage for preforming his Trade ----
-this is just my own opinion ---the scripture does NOT say that -------but it just makes sense -------I am sure Joseph and Jesus got a wage for the work they did ------
Now this word carpenter ----if you look it up means more that working with wood and nails -------Jesus could have worked with stone --iron or copper as well as wood -------
Easton's Bible Dictionary
Carpenter------
An artificer in stone, iron, and copper, as well as in wood (
Mark 6:3).
Every Jew, even the rabbis, learned some handicraft
