To me it doesn't matter what Calvary Chapel is or isn't today. What I find the most interesting is the message the film puts out. It's all about having an experience with a generic "God" that anyone can have, regardless of what they believe or teach doctrinally; and regardless of whether they love truth or not. It's the same message that permeates everything today.

Joel 2:32 KJV
And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call.

The serpent said that God was in fact hiding the truth and being the controller.
But quite the opposite, God wants to fellowship with us as His family, His creation.
Satan is the destroyer, he is so mad that he has lost his position in Gods realm.

He will say and do anything to take away from us our inheritance that God has promised to those who serve Him.

Genesis 3:5 KJV
For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

People are so afraid, instead of trusting God completely.
They think they must eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil = death
so they will have good defence, can protect themself. God is able to warn his child of danger.
The more you feed on that tree, the more death you bring to your life.

Genesis 2:17 KJV
But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

Ok, the movie is about the Jesus Movement that happened in the 70s. Whether the movie portrays that well is debatable. But wiping out the whole movement as "generic" is to be ignorant of what actually happened then. Many young people poured into the church, and they stayed. They gave up a lifestyle of free sex and drugs and never looked back. My hometown was a fairly small one, our church could hold maybe 400 if full. It was a newly built church, our pastor at the time believed it was time to have faith and expand. At that time the movement hit and that church was packed. It wasn't long before the nursery was filled and families were coming to church. So to dismiss the movement so casually is a bit arrogant.

Yes, so now there are many gods walking around knowing good and evil.

Genesis 3:4-5 KJV
And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

A movie really never lives up to its potential in telling the true story.

One thing is for certain, the hippies found themselves inside a Church Building listening to Chuck Smith.

Driving several times per day, and catching recordings of Chuck Smith preaching, I believe he preached the Bible word for word. But he's more of a teacher of the Word of God. This is why the first sermon begins with Genesis Chapter One. And they read the Chapter and Chuck teaches.

That is all good!!

But they need Holy Spirit filled men of God to walk in and preach what God has for them that day.

They need Meat!

And it’s still true today.

The movie was never intended to tell a true story. The intention from the outset was to push an agenda.
Well, Greg Laurie, who came out of that real life experience, became a minister in training and even spent several years being an Associate Pastor for Billy Graham.

The guy basically preaches and altar calls exactly like Billy Graham but he is also part of the Calvary Chapel Leadership.

This was his Movie and he provided the funding.

My thinking is Greg is hoping for a repeat Movement. But his experience led him to be a real follower of Christ, not a crutch using it for a scam.

Who knows!

But I am willing to believe when Greg put this together he wasn't thinking about homosexuality and drugs attached to it. I bet it is the Movement all its own driving him.

True.

Greg Laurie made (created and funded) a movie about himself.

From the moment that the hippie preacher Lonnie Frisbee “prophesied” over him, Greg has fancied himself as the next Billy Graham. And he’s done everything he could to make that prophesy come to be true. One could look at this and say— ‘Wow— Lonnie got it right. Lonnie must have been shown by God -Greg’s future and he truly was a prophet.’

Or one could be more critical and call this a self-fulfilling prophecy of sorts in that Greg acted upon Lonnie’s “prophecy” and took steps to make it his future because GREG chose to believe what Lonnie had said to him. Greg groomed himself to become a man made in the mold of a Billy Graham-like evangelist right down to the tent meetings- (Greg calls them Harvest Crusades) the altar calls, the sinner’s prayers.

If Lonnie had told Greg that God showed him that one day he (Greg) would be a famous race car driver— Greg might have worked his whole life to become one. Would that again have made Lonnie a prophet, or would it just be a case of a young man working hard to become what someone told him he should/would be?

Let the reader decide.

Well. God is able to use Satan for God's Own Will.

Job, not such a case, but God allowed Satan to remove all Job had and turned around and Double Blessed him.

But I do understand your viewpoints about being the next Graham.

So here's a serious question for you about some of the Churches and strategy.

You think there's sincere people involved but you believe through and through these leaders are using Seeker Friendly techniques and this is a spiritless Movement?

It's a good question, and the answer is yes. Of course there are sincere people involved. But keeping it real, a person can be 100% sincere and at the same time sincerely wrong. -What I mean is, -a person can be sincere and in error at the same time. My attitude toward all of it is this>>

For whoever is not against us is for us. For I tell you the truth, whoever gives you a cup of water because you bear Christ’s name will never lose his reward.

This was the response when Jesus was asked about someone doing miracles in his name (claiming his authority) who was not truly a follower of his. He didn't oppose them. If they are doing something good-- let them do good.

He accompanied that with a warning for those who are not up to any good--

“If anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a huge millstone tied around his neck and to be thrown into the sea."

As far as 'spiritless' goes-- there are many movements that claim to be movements of the spirit. From Calvary Chapel came this Jesus movement-- spirit led? Sure. Don't forget that Jesus himself was "led by the spirit" out into the desert to be tempted by Satan. The understanding of these things is not for the sake of simplicity, rather it is purpose-driven (to use a loaded term). The spirit leads where it might at the direction of and by the will of the Father and no one can fathom His ways.

I often think the Father is pleased by the direction one is going and not as concerned about any particular destination. He seeks those who turn from their own way, change direction and instead choose to follow his leading (by spirit) in whatever direction He determines is for our good. If people turned from sex, drugs and rock and roll toward a desire to escape those traps and toward Jesus---- that happened and it was wonderful. They were fed spiritual pablum and some never moved beyond it.

They learned to use music to alter one's state of mind in a certain way that some might call manipulative, but it's what they knew to be effective based on their own experiences in the drug culture. They used those experiences for good purposes one might say.

In the end-- there were a few very flawed people that found their way into a church and that church was changed forever as a result. Another way of looking at this more broadly- one could say that a few people got changed at a church and found their way into the hippy culture and it was changed forever as a result. A little of both took place and it wasn't as if the hippies at church were suddenly perfect, nor were the church people perfect--- all were flawed in various ways.

They get some light and …….
Mark 8:24 KJV
And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees, walking.
Like a child with a favourite toy, that is never put aside, because of immaturity.
Or for whatever reason is not able to grow up.
2 Peter 3:18 KJV
But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

Thank God for the sure foundation.

Isaiah 28:13-15 KJV
But the word of the Lord was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.
[14] Wherefore hear the word of the Lord, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.
[15] Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
[16] Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.

I watched the movie; it has good points but unfortunately a lot of bad.

Someone watching it would probably start thinking about Jesus, but mostly about "God." [...]
[...] but other than that Jesus is conspicuously absent.
This ^ is what I'm always wondering before I see any Christian movie LIKE this one [and looking for when watching], and as I've not yet gone to see it, was wondering about this very thing (what I've bolded, above, in your post).

So I'm glad you've mentioned it. I like, whenever possible, to know ahead of time... so... Thanks for mentioning this!! = )

Kelsey Grammer endorses homosexual marriage. He was raised in Christian Science and is still a fan of it. He's a fan of Emmet Fox, the creator of the Church of Divine Science. Grammer calls himself a Christian but when you start looking into what he actually believes and practices it's clear he believes in metaphysics more than anything.
