What is the difference between the old and the new covenant?

When Christians say they are not under the law, what does that mean? What does it mean that the law is abolished?

If we are not under law then surely, this means that we can do as we please doesn't it?

And if we dont have any laws to follow then what is the purpose of reading the bible?

You don't need the Law to know that certain behavior is wrong.

When you break the Law, you still bear earthly consequences.

We just need to know that the Law was not given to us and we don't need the Law to relate to God.

I as a citizen of Canada am not under the laws of England. I may read them for historical context, find value in them, even strive to keep them, but all that does nothing to make me a English citizen. We as Christians are not citizens of ancient Israel; why would we strive to keep laws given only to ancient Israel?

As Paul wrote, "May it never be!" (Romans 6:2). I'd encourage you to read chapters 5 through 7.

If you, as an adult, received a letter from your father, what would be the point of reading it? He's not giving you laws. In the same way, the Bible is a letter from your heavenly Father. You might have reason to read it other than looking for laws to follow.

The covenant (old) were directed only to the nation of Israel. In order for the covenants to be fulfilled, Christ had to accomplish the atonement, His sacrifice of Himself. But, by His Grace that was extended beyond the covenants, and opened the windows of heaven's salvation to the whole race.

Through the whole of the Old Covenant there was always one trouble: man's heart was not right with God. The Nation of Israel has an external law written on stone, the Mosaic Law. The law which successfully reveals the character of God also successfully reveals the sinful character of human beings, just as a child’s desire for cookies is increased when Mother says “Don’t touch”, so sinful passions are aroused by the law. In the New Covenant the evil is to be remedied and it is being fully met in the believer’s life by the indwelling Spirit. Its central promise is a heart delighting in God's law that is internally written on the believer’s heart, it says “I won’t touch”, it’s a more excellent remedy.

External law “Don’t touch” (sinful passions are aroused)

Internal law “I won’t touch” (delight)

The primary difference is the curses listed at Ex 34:6-7, Lev 26:3-38, Deut
27:15-26, and Deut 28:1-69.

People whose association with God is governed by the old covenant get
slammed with those curses when they fail to comply with it commandments.

The new covenant contains no curses. So then, people whose association
with God is governed by the new covenant are in no danger of being
slammed with a curse for failure to comply with its commandments.

Certain behaviour, but what about the other behaviours? How will anyone know whats wrong or right?

Which law are you referring to here? The law of God, or the law of the land? The law of God is not necessarily the law of the land.

Actually I just think whether you are under the old or new covenant you still need to obey God's command, but there are people who dont think so. And I want to know how they arrived at that conclusion.

I want to talk about what exactly it means to be under grace and not under law, and how is it that we dont have any laws to follow, and even if there are laws, Jesus paid the price so we are free and dont need to follow any laws. This is the sentiment that some seems to be saying. And I once heard a pastor say that God can never run out of grace.

Jesus fulfilled all the types and shadows of him in the law and prophets. This does not mean that sin no longer exists we learn from the law what sin is, more over how fulfill the commands that Jesus gave to love our neighbors as our selves. Leviticus 19: 9-18 gives us example of what loving our neighbors actually is. At the end of verse 18 it is written that you shall love your neighbor as yourself, I am the Lord. Jesus quotes this passage when he gave this command to live out neighbors. So we learn what sin is from the law, and we learn what love looks like from the law.

Loving our neighbour is a commandment found in old and new testament.

So the law was not done away with, only certain parts of it.

The purpose of reading the Bible to know and believe the Gospel, and then live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world.

I guess I wasn't very good at communicating the idea I intended to convey.
The idea is ain't we are not under the curse of the law, bit the law still teaches us valuable things. Like what it means to live our neighbors, and what it means to love God, and what justice is and what mercy is. For example it's written in Dueteronomy 23 not to return a slave to his master but let h take refuge with you and do not harm them. That we learn from this not to send anyone back to an abusive situation or back to bondage of any type. That we should help people escape bondage, and abuse, and that we certainly should not be the abuser. There is so much to learn there as a Christian.

sorry but, you need to read the Bible! From Genesis to Revelation.

The bible is divided into two parts right. One is called 'The old testament' the other, part 2 is called the new testament.

The difference between the Old testment and the new testament is Jesus.

a covenant is sort of like a promise, and an agreement with God.
ok I am not going to repeat the entire Bible for you....but if you havent read Genesis the whole way through and Exodus, then you need to start seriously turning some pages to find out!
