-the lust of the flesh
-and the lust of the eyes
-and the boastful pride of life
Are you saying 'the lust of the eyes' is a sub-part of the lust of the flesh. I fail to see a full distinction in your explanation. The flesh = the human body and its passions (including gluttony)
The eyes = everything that has eye appeal (particularly material possessions)
The pride of life = prestige, power, pomp, privilege, presumption.
There are lawful desires and unlawful desires (called lusts). One needs to know where the dividing line is.
Lust of the flesh could be desire (passion) for a beautiful woman not one's wife. Lust of the eyes could be desire for an expensive vehicle (possession) when a less expensive one would suffice (just because your neighbor has one). Are you saying 'the lust of the eyes' is a sub-part of the lust of the flesh. I fail to see a full distinction in your explanation.
Can you give examples of each of those two?
For all that is in the world,
-the lust of the flesh
-and the lust of the eyes
-and the boastful pride of life,
is not from the Father, but is from the world. 1 John 2:16 (NASB)
It's a good reference...Eve too is tempted the same way
- The Fruit of the Tree was good to look at (eyes)
- The Fruit of the Tree was good to eat (flesh)
- The Fruit of the Tree was good to make one wise before other men (pride of life)
It's a good reference...
Genesis 3:6 KJV
[6] And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
...but just wondering why something that is 'good for food' happens also to fall under 'lust of the flesh'.
