For all that is in the world,

-the lust of the flesh
-and the lust of the eyes
-and the boastful pride of life,

is not from the Father, but is from the world. 1 John 2:16 (NASB)

The flesh = the human body and its passions (including gluttony)
The eyes = everything that has eye appeal (particularly material possessions)
The pride of life = prestige, power, pomp, privilege, presumption.

There are lawful desires and unlawful desires (called lusts). One needs to know where the dividing line is.

“16 For all that is in the world (there is nothing in the system of this world that is of God), the lust of the flesh (refers to evil cravings), and the lust of the eyes (craves what it sees), and the pride of life (that which trusts its own power and resources, and shamefully despises and violates Divine Laws and human rights), is not of the Father, but is of the world. (These things have the system of the world as their source, not the Heavenly Father.)” 1 John 2:16

Are you saying 'the lust of the eyes' is a sub-part of the lust of the flesh. I fail to see a full distinction in your explanation.
Can you give examples of each of those two?

Lust of the flesh could be desire (passion) for a beautiful woman not one's wife. Lust of the eyes could be desire for an expensive vehicle (possession) when a less expensive one would suffice (just because your neighbor has one).

A brand new Mercedes Benz S model.
  1. Its luxury and safety will coddle your flesh
  2. It looks beautiful to most car-enthusiasts
  3. And it tells the world that your are successful
But the best lesson is our Lord Jesus' test in the wilderness
  1. After 40 of fasting He was hungry. It is normal for a hungry man to desire bread (flesh)
  2. The devil showed Him the glory of the Kingdoms of this earth. It is pleasing to the eyes (eyes)
  3. Throwing Himself down froma high place and surviving would establish Him as special before men (pride)
Eve too is tempted the same way
  1. The Fruit of the Tree was good to look at (eyes)
  2. The Fruit of the Tree was good to eat (flesh)
  3. The Fruit of the Tree was good to make one wise before other men (pride of life)

It's a good reference...

Genesis 3:6 KJV
[6] And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

...but just wondering why something that is 'good for food' happens also to fall under 'lust of the flesh'.

It wasn't good for food. It was deadly poison. It was Eve's perception of the fruit, but God had warned her - no, forbidden her. This happens to men and women on a daily basis. You think you must have something. Your family and friends warn you, but you do it anyway - and .... decide in haste - suffer at leisure. Bathsheba was "good for the eyes" and "good for the flesh". But she took away David's peace for the rest of his life. God would have dome nothing if it had been any single maiden in Israel, but that one was forbidden.

In our Lord's temptation, He was offered the "Kingdoms of this world and all their glory". Had He not come for this? Yes! But He was to receive it at the hand of God and not a usurper.
