Tongues and raising the dead were both gifts of Spirit. If you can"speak in tongues" you can raise the dead.
Is there not a verse that say you will not have all of the gifts and you should build on the gifts God gave you? I was under the impression it is in the Bible but can't remember now.

Our Pastor had a series about where we all fit into the ministry and I think he mentioned it there...

But he speaks only through scripture. Paul says it thoroughly furnishes us. People imagine God is speaking to them and end up in all kinds of difficulties. Even when tongues and prophecy were in the church before the scriptures were complete, Paul said they only gave partial knowledge. So it's important to take the sword of the Spirit that is the Word of God.
You are mistaken. He is not silent and have never stopped speaking. But learning to hear his voice is not easy and takes some determination, strong desire and a humble an obedient heart. It is a journey but a very exciting one. There isn't a lot of good teaching on this and fewer examples and it is sometimes abused because of the ignorance of the church so I can see why people decided God no longer speaks to people directly. Makes it easier and requires no discernment. But it is throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

1 Corinthians 12:28-31 KJV
And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. [29] Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? [30] Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret? [31] But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.

--AND--

1 Corinthians 12:7-11 KJV
But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. [8] For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; [9] To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; [10] To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: [11] But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

Scripture thoroughly equips us. Voices in the head deceive and lead astray.

If people had ANY of the Charismatic gifts today, you would have plenty of evidence with all the Smart Phones and youtube. But they are missing. Why not study scripture for yourself and demand that someone raise the dead before you give them a minute of your time teaching this stuff?

Even if there was you wouldn't believe... I tell the same thing to atheists when asked that question.

Your second statement "understanding is the basis of edification" is not what Paul said. You might claim "understanding is what edifies the understanding" but he starts off clarifying that the speaking in tongues he's talking about is NOT understood by man because it is not spoken TO man...yet it edifies the speaker (just not the speaker's understanding).

Love in Jesus,
Kelby
Here's what he says. Argue with God.
“He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.” 1 Corinthians 14:4 (KJV 1900)

“For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.” 1 Corinthians 14:17 (KJV 1900)

“I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interprets, that the church may receive edifying.” 1 Corinthians 14:5 (KJV 1900)

= real tongue speakers were edified because they knew what they were saying. And needed to interpret so others could be just as edified as they were.

Face up to it, it would be world news if any one of the Apostles performed their miracles as they did in Acts today. Charismatics are all hat and no cattle.

Again no, I believe this is the scripture you are speaking of correct?

14 Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy. 2 For anyone who speaks in a tongue[a] does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit. 3 But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging and comfort. 4 Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves, but the one who prophesies edifies the church. 5 I would like every one of you to speak in tongues,[b] but I would rather have you prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues,[c] unless someone interprets, so that the church may be edified.

The word edify means to build up strenghten teach and grow, and Paul does say it edifies us but then goes on to say that they are not speaking to men in this instance but to God and no one understands them because they speak by the spirit. This is what I am talking about when I mention around the forums how in that intimate moments we speak to him and express things that the human tongue simply has no word for, those deep unexpressable adoration love reverence gratefulness joy everything we feel for him but are unable to express it in words because the human tongue simply cannot it is just to deep.
He then goes to speak about prophecy which even says here it is not about seeing the future but about edifying encouraging building up and bringing the church closer to God

These are two different gifts but the tongues also has an interpreter for when the tongue spoken is not for ones self but for the church there is more than one purpose and more than one kind of tongues as the scripture says and it even says to seek and love the gifts especially prophecy because those who excel in encouraging building strengthening and lighting the fire in the churches hearts are what a prophet is.

I explained this in my thread the difference between a prophet and prophecy, so no you completely missed the point of the scripture
Truth works by love. Where's the love in leading the naive astray?

I remember the very moment I surrendered my life to God, He spoke to my spirit in such a profound way. Every fear and anxiety that I had carried for years had melted away. I was changed forever, my life turned around completely, everything was new.
I'll never forget that moment, and nothing can take it away either :D

So when you read the bible and you hear the words read internally, that's God voice ey?
Whose voice are you hearing when you read the daily paper? Or any other thing that you read?
I hear my voice reading the words. I have one spirit, not several.

I noticed you excluded verse 14...

1 Corinthians 14:14 KJV
For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. <--that happens when the person doesn't know what they're praying (but the spirit does). It builds a person up (edifies), but doesn't add learning to their brain.

In other words, the edifying in verse one happens at the same time as the "my understanding is unfruitful" of verse 14.

That doesn't change just because you say it doesn't work that way. I've got it. I do it. It does that.

This passage means that even though you understand it, your understanding doesn't bear fruit for others unless you interpret.

33.145 ἑρμηνεύω; μεθερμηνεύω; διερμηνεύωa: to translate from one language to another—‘to translate, to interpret.’

Really, nobody paying top dollar for sensational news to report?
You have people that are not interested in the fame and fortune and they will do miracles without any media hype. I have a close pastor friend that prayed for a lady with cancer in front of Muslim doctors in hospital and she had to run to the toilet because the cancer fell out of her. The Muslim doctors were speechless and did not say a word. God will use whoever He will to do miracles to honour His name.

I told you last time my friend, me and my wife have seen miracles with our own eyes and there is no logical explanation except for it was a miracle.

My wife was driving to work on a particular stretch of highway in SA. It is a busy road, and while she was driving she was worshipping God. All of the sudden she heard somebody speaking to her and say "look out!". She saw this big truck next to her losing control and closed her eyes while praying for her safety. When she opened her eyes the truck was gone and they guy behind her was looking at her in absolute amazement with his hands over his head. She said that his expression was one of “what just happened?” She never saw the truck again. Call it what you like but miracles occur around us every day my dear brother and I will keep on thanking God for His miracles in our lives.

The prayer of faith heals the sick. We are talking about the gifts of the Spirit the Apostles distributed that commanded healing just as Jesus did. Commanded the dead to raise up. We have lots of talk instead with no evidence.
