There does seem to be a connection between prophesy and speaking in tongues as Peter appears to be calling their speaking in tongues the fulfillment of Joel that they they would prophesy.
Yes tongues one of the manners he spoke prophecy to all the nations .

1 Corinthians 12:27-31 New International Version (NIV)
27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 28 And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? 31 Now eagerly desire the greater gifts.
And yet I will show you the most excellent way.

I believe this passage also shows that all will not have the gift. Just as all will not be an apostle, pastor, prophet, etc.
Hi rough soul, a wise young man once said to me “please read Micah 5:2 (especially the last few words) in NIV”. Then compare to the other versions

speaking in tongues is one way of praying and in no way is it mandatory.

we have to ask ourselves, will God kill us if we don't pray in tongues !

Acts 2:5-13 NKJV

[at least 17 languages——not mahumbo jumbo]

And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from ‘every nation’ under heaven. And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them ‘speak in his own language’ Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each in our “own language in which we were born?” Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our “own tongues” the wonderful works of God.” So they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “Whatever could this mean?”

Others mocking said, “They are full of new wine.”

‘Emphasis’ mine

Yes the drunken mockers mocking God for rebuking them at Pentecost The faithful understanding of that prophecy was hidden to show what the faithless do. When angry with God not seen they look for fault in others. The log in the eyes ones.

The priests and prophets are all drunk with wine and beer. They stumble and fall down. The prophets are drunk when they see their dreams. The judges are drunk when they make their decisions. Every table is covered with vomit. There is not a clean place anywhere. Isaiah 28

No. Scripture says they are for the edification of self in less interpreted.
I would offer the Bible does not promote self-edification. (I did it) Edifying the temporal corrupted things seen rather than the things of faith the eternal unseen . Prophecy called tongues is the interpretation His word as the power to believe of God, not of our own selves . It gives us His understanding.

Where Jude says, "Build yourselves up in the most holy faith," is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Prophecy called tongues is the interpretation His word as the power to believe of God, not of our own selves . It gives us His understanding.
Where in Scripture is "tongues" called "prophecy"?

4 Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves, but the one who prophesies edifies the church. 5 I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be edified.

And definitely distinctive comparing prophecy vs tongues.

My Korean friend said she began speaking in tongues very quickly, maybe a few months, after becoming a Christian. She said the more mature Christian speaks in tongues. Is this true?

In regards to speaking in tongues, I will never forget when my friend (who previously attended an Assemblies of God church) went to a Bible study at his Pastor's house once a week and sometimes the Pastor would speak in tongues during their Bible study. My friend worked with a woman who was a Baptist that was terrified of being around people who spoke in tongues, yet my friend convinced her to come to the Bible study to see for herself that she has nothing to fear. When his lady friend showed up at the Bible study, as soon as she walked in the door, the Pastor began speaking in tongues very loudly with his hands high in the air, then he fell backwards to the floor! My friend said that even he was freaked out by the incident and when he turned around, his lady friend was running for the hills! o_O
As a new believer, I took my hubby to a ‘fellowship’ (hoping he would get saved). About 15 people there and they seemed to all speak in tongues at the same time. It was madness...we never went again...much later went to a conference and the speaker (Jackie pullinger) got everyone up speaking in tongues at once. There were hundreds of people babbling (including me, to my shame...I didn’t want to look the odd one out did I? 😐). I remember reading 1 Cor. 14:33 and realising that it just felt wrong

No comparison .One in the same. God mocking those who mock prophecy called tongues.

The Isiah foundation as a law is broadened in the new testament . Same law. God mocking unbelievers
Same yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.

In the
law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, says the Lord. Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe. 1 Corinthians 14 21-2

No such thing as a sign gifts "seen" Spiritual gifts the unseen that work in men yes as the mystery of God

.The sign is they who mock prophecy do not believe prophecy after any manner to include tongues. The language of God spoken to the whole world .faithless mankind.

If a person deems prophecy as baby talk with not understanding then its true to them. That idea sounds like babies to those who do believe prophecy. They need to grow in faith so they can walk with the more mature. .

You could say explain this or that.

Maybe your ears are tied after reading the parables and literalizing the signified understanding.?. ? LOL

Did you try. . . or did you give up as you have on the doctrine of tongues as prophecy .Do you have a understanding of what prophecy is?

Do you agree that tongues is a a sign against those who believe not prophecy? God mocking those who mock his word?

If not go back to the foundation of the doctrine Isaiah 28 and try again .Its the same law repeated in 1 Corhtitains 14 .They support each other as two witnesses of one law. . and yet after all that they still make a noise fall backward mocking the spirit of judgment.

Some say that "speaking in tongues" did exist at one time (because it's written in the bible) but is not for today. ( ... ) But OK, let's give them the benefit of the doubt on that one.

Let's NOT argue whether or not speaking in tongues is for today. We can limit the discussion to the benefits of speaking in tongues DURING the times that the bible DOES allow speaking in tongues, since this is a Bible Discussion Forum and speaking in tongues was given by God to at least some according to the word of God, in the bible.

In other words, since the bible says that speaking in tongues was a gift of the Holy Ghost in the bible)...WHY was it given? WHAT does the bible say it accomplishes (while it is in operation)?

And to be clear about this...whether or not tongues ceased (or will cease) HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ITS PURPOSE DURING THE TIME OF ITS EXISTENCE. So please pay attention to when people are trying to get off-topic. We're only looking at what "speaking in tongues" does accomplish, while it is functioning, as described in the BIBLE. What are the benefits? And let's be patient and thorough about it. :)

Love in Jesus,
Kelby
If you read 1cor chapters 12 through 14 which is known as unit chapters. The context of the three chapters is not tongues but as you said: " The gifts of the Holy Spirit which Paul said " I do not want you to be unlearned about them.

what are the gifts of the Holy Spirit for found in 1cor chapter 12-14?

The answer is in Chapter 12 -14

The gifts are to unify the body. The Holy Spirit leads us into all truth. The body of believers are made up of different giftings for the Betterment of all.

1cor 12:7
"But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: "

They are empowering gifts from the Holy Spirit.

There does seem to be a connection between prophesy and speaking in tongues as Peter appears to be calling their speaking in tongues the fulfillment of Joel that they they would prophesy.
There is a connection between speaking in tongues and prophecy, in that both come directly from the Spirit of God. In 1 Corinthians 14 Paul is clarifying (trying to separate correctly) the specific purposes and limitations of each.

I'll not go through the whole chapter here but I'll show a few.

In 1 Corinthians 14 verse 1, he's acknowledging "Hey, it's good that you want to use the spiritual (speaking in tongues) now that you've got it, but that's kind of just the base level of spirituality...you ought to be aspiring towards prophesying".

First I'm going to express some SIMILARITIES between speaking in tongues and prophecy...the "connection" between them if you will. Paul knows but doesn't expound this in the chapter. He actually takes it for granted that the people already have the Holy Ghost with speaking in tongues, and that they know where it comes from (back then, it was known that the Holy Ghost is an identifier, and he was writing to those with the Holy Ghost). So he just refers to it as "spiritual" in verse 1. And yes I expect some criticism from the haters...lol , and even some Christians who haven't been greatly taught :(

Nevertheless:
BOTH come from the same source... God.
BOTH are spiritual (meaning each is a use of the Spirit of God, not just a use of the flesh)
in BOTH prophecy and speaking in tongues, it is God who provides the words, man simply yields/applies the use of his mouth to the purpose)

In 1 Corinthians 14 verse 2 Paul starts expounding on their different purposes:
Prophecy speaks to MAN. Tongues speaks to GOD.
Prophecy can be understood by MAN. Tongues is only understood by GOD (unless GOD provides an interpreter).
Prophecy edifies a GROUP (the hearers). Tongues edifies the INDIVIDUAL (the speaker)(unless God provides an interpreter)
Etc. etc.

If you want to understand 1 Corinthians 14 more clearly, read it like Jesus' answer about paying respect (taxes) to Ceasar. "Give that which is Ceasar's to Ceasar, and that which is God's to God".

Love in Jesus,

My Korean friend said she began speaking in tongues very quickly, maybe a few months, after becoming a Christian. She said the more mature Christian speaks in tongues. Is this true?
I see someone answered before I did, but I think you still want an honest answer.

My answer to your question (because of how your friend worded it) is "Sort of". What I mean by that is her wording is on the right track but isn't completely accurate.

Some start speaking in tongues when they get baptized. Some receive speaking in tongues when they are all alone, seeking God. Some receive it when they get prayed for with laying on of hands. Some struggle for awhile before they can "let it function" because it seems so 'weird'. <-- I was this last kind even though I'd actually received it just after getting baptized (in Jesus' name for remission of sins). All need to learn when and how to use it properly, once they've received it, which is part of why 1 Corinthians 14 was written.

As you read about people in the bible who received the Holy Ghost, you can see the path they took to get it. The apostles (and the rest of the 120 in Acts 1) started out as normal folks (fishermen, tax collectors, doctors, women, girls, etc) they became believers, became disciples, got baptized, continued to grow in knowledge and experience and seeking God until the day that God poured out the holy ghost on them (with speaking in tongues) at which point they became sons and daughters of God.. It would be flawed to accuse them along this path. And I will not accuse you.

Others (after the day of Pentecost) received the Holy Ghost (which still came with speaking in tongues) in various ways Some at laying on of hands. Some as they heard the word. There's not a promise of when you will receive it, but there is a promise that it is available to you. (As the Holy Ghost is a promise to ALL that God calls (per Acts 2:38,39).

I encourage you to keep seeking until you find. Keep asking until you receive. Keep knocking until it is opened... to YOU. "If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?" -Luke 11:13 KJV

That's what they had to do until the day of Pentecost. (acts2). That's what had to be done in Acts 8:12-17, Acts 10 (Cornelius' seeking was a good portion of his life) and Acts 19:1-6. <--that one is most like your situation. You are already a believer and a disciple, and perhaps have been baptized in some fashion. But you may still need to be baptized correctly and to receive the Holy Ghost. Keep seeking God until you have ALL that he has to offer, not just what is easy or popular.

I will be praying for you, and hope to support you.

Love in Jesus,
Kelby

P.S. There will likely be a lot of resistance to what I just told you. Don't be surprised. Jesus told his disciples "If they persecute me, they will persecute you." That's still true today.

The purpose of speaking in tongues is so that 'pastors' of places like Hillsong and C3 can convince you that they're men of faith and that you should give them your money ;)

Funny how God has chosen only certain types of churches for constantly speaking in tongues...
