My personal experience is that I had a stony, hard heart, that was crushed and broken by the Truth, and then healed, I would say grace is the cause of my conversion, not the description of it.

Are you saying that grace is Gods response to your faith? I would say that Grace is the inviting and calling of God that leads to repentance and then the continuing and completing of the work that He began in us

THE FIVE ARTICLES OF REMONSTRANCE


In 1609, Jacob Arminius died. His chief students and followers condensed his teaching into Five Articles. There were two main individuals who put the Five Points of Arminianism together: Jan Uytenbogaert assisted by Simon Episcopius. They were his closest associates and most devoted students. [1] So, in 1610, they summarized Arminius' teaching which was against Martin Luther, a principal Theologian of the Protestant Reformation. Now John Calvin, who was alive at the time of Martin Luther, set about to more fully explain the teachings of Martin Luther and the True Protestants in more precise detail in order to present them all to Francis I, King of France. As we will recall, Luther, who was still alive when Calvin composed his Institutes, read Calvins' works and agreed with them all 100% as being an accurate presentation of his (Luthers') teaching and his sermons, and fit to be presented to Francis I, King of France for his edification.
Now Jacob Arminius, basically, had believed himself to be more of a Bible scholar than Martin Luther and he (Arminius) began teaching what disagreed with Luther. Arminius began to draw some students, and also some Roman Catholic prelates who were very interested indeed in Arminius' presentation that seemed to overthrow Luther. Later, the Remonstrants that disagreed with the core teachings of the Reformation summarized their disagreement with Martin Luther into five basic points and called these five Points "The Articles of the Remonstrants" ("they" being the "remonstrants" or objectors to Luthers' teaching, and their objection to the core Doctrines upon which the True Protestant Reformation was based). They had learned these things from Jacob Arminius.

SINCE ARMINIUS' CORE TEACHING WAS IN THESE FIVE POINTS THEY SOON BECAME KNOWN AS THE FIVE POINTS OF ARMINIANISM

The Five Points of Arminianism were the main reason The Synod of Dort was Convened[2] in 1618. This Synod of Dort (as an answer to the Five Points of Arminianism), produced what became known as "The Five Points of Calvinism" as a result. T.U.L.I.P. was simply the Biblical refutation and rebuke to the Five Points (or Articles) of Arminianism which appeared before what are called "The Five Points of Calvinism" (Calvin had long since passed on to his Heavenly Reward). The True Protestants Called this Council (Synod) to clearly set down what they believed so that later, there would be no doubt in anyones' mind concerning the teachings of Martin Luther as compared to Arminius or the Roman Catholic Church (the Roman Catholic Church later did approve Arminianism, and still does).

ARMINIANISM IS RULED HERESY AND A PERVERSION OF THE TEACHINGS OF MARTIN LUTHER

Arminianism was Unanimously Ruled a Heresy at the Synod of Dort by all the Delegates representing the True Protestant Churches. [3]
Here are the original Five Points of Arminiansim. Later, Semi-Arminianism added to and altered these Five Original Points. This will be discussed later.

Please notice that Jesus here states that we cannot stand in faith alone, not without Christ,
not without abiding in Him. This is so important for us to rememeber. If we claim to be saved
Christians we will listen to His voice and follow His commandments (V. 10). If we remain in Him
we will do as He commands, notice this is not a request by our Lord it is a command and hence
we have no other action if we are to remain in Him. If we do not do this then we will be cast
forth (cast out) of fellowship and we will suffer.

His commandment is that we love one another (v. 12.) Love one another as He has loved us,
how could we love as well as Him, it seems impossible and yet there is the commandment.
Jesus reminds us that we are not just servants now, we are His friends, think of it actually
friends with the Divine being, with the Triune God. How much we owe, how much we are
undeserving of His love, but there it is, we are counted as His friends.

Jesus points out to the disciples in the upper room that we did not choose Him but rather
he chose us (v. 16)
. And although some may grumbe that these words are for the disciples
alone yet I believe with all my heart that they are for all His disciples who have been
and are to come.

In this great discourse Jesus reminds the disciples that the world hated Him without cause
(v. 18-19) and that the world will also hate us, and without cause. This may be easier to take
from people who have no regard for Christ Jesus, but how hard it is to be labelled and hated
for supposedly teaching heresy. So are the ones that hate of the world or do they follow Christ.
Are their words seasoned with love, or are their words straining at mlaice. The reader will judge.

Some people have entered this thread, said they disagree and left in peace, That is what discussion
is about. It is a popular thing now among Christian circles to vilify any people who have a different
take on scripture. I remember in the old days of Paltalk.com people who testified to the veracity
of the Nicene Creed were called as being part of the beast. Strange. How can Christianity stand
when we devour each other and tear at the flesh like animals. The Christian is ofen afflicted by the
world, how hard to be vilified by people who say they love Jesus but hate this man of history or that
man, how strange.

Jesus set a perfect example on the cross by praying for His enemies, and we are told to do the same.
We are to forgive them and to pray for them, that they may have the light that lights up the hearts
of men and find everlasting peace.
Amen.

If we start a conversation (discussion) about theology, how can we discuss if we have not studied.
I would say that is impossible. Studying doctrine is as imporatant as worship, in fact it is worship
to study God's word honestly is a great blessing.

Keeping Christ’s commandments is the result of our love for Him, and our love for Him is the result of the New Birth.

Let's take Article I and examine its wording closely:


1. There is no Scripture which says that God has DECREED salvation for anyone. So this part corresponds to Reformed Theology which teaches that God has decreed everything (good and evil) from the very beginning (which is not so), and he has decreed the salvation of the elect.

2. But this portion avoids the Calvinistic teaching that God decrees salvation only for the elect, and instead postulates that God decrees "to save" those "who shall believe on His Son Jesus..."

3. Had that been all that was said it would have been partially acceptable. But it does not stop there. It goes on to add "and shall persevere in this faith and obedience of faith, through this grace, even to the end". This is the Arminian idea that salvation also depends on the perseverance of those who are saved. But that is not what Scripture teaches. Eternal life is God's GIFT of grace to the one who repents and believes, and "the gifts and calling of God are without repentance (irrevocable). Which does not mean that believes are not appointed unto good works, but it does mean that they do not maintain their salvation through their perseverance.

Now this is pure Reformed Theology, which postulates that God decrees the damnation of unbelievers. God decrees none for salvation or damnation, but instead offers salvation to "whosoever will" and indeed God is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

This is a MISAPPLICATION of John 3:36, which teaches the exact opposite of what is being stated. John 3:36 must be taken in the context of John 3:14-36, where we see that while God offers salvation to all, only those who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ shall be saved. At the same time there is a dire warning that those who fail to obey the Gospel will face the wrath of God. But God does not decree wrath while offering salvation.
1. Like you, I do also disagree with the perserverance part. Perserverance is a result of Gods grace, not a condition for receiving it. See Hebrews 3:6, and note the tenses of the verbs

2. God did decree to save those who believe. Christ is the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. Why did God decree that He would be slain? To save those who believe through Him. This is what the decree statement in article one actually means

3. God does leave the incorrigible and unbelieving in their sin. He does not force them to come. Even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, He gave them over to a reprobate mind. And whoever does not believe has the wrath of God abiding on him

Conclusion. The only part of article one I take issue with is the perserverance part. Perserverance is not a condition of receiving grace/salvation, but a result of it. Again, see Hebrews 3:6 and please note the tenses of the verbs

Contextually, That verse is written to a church, but it is true that Jesus also stands at the door of an unbelievers heart and knocks as well. That is why I said that GRACE PRECEDES OUR FAITH as well as FOLLOWS IT.

You and I are saved because God drew us and called us. He was drawing us to Himself long before we began to seek Him.

God does leave the incorrigible and unbelieving in their sin. He does not force them to come.
Quite the opposite. God draws all men to Christ, and Christ commands the Church to go into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature. While He does not force anyone to be saved, He does not consign some to Hell arbitrarily (which again connects to that so-called *decree*.

The fear of the Lord is wisdom, and wisdom comes from the Lord

Grace...
Maybe that is why it says the fear of the Lord is the BEGINNING of wisdom....
And also...if any of us lacks it we have to ASK and He will give it to us 🙂

Do you think it is wise to ask for wisdom? Does the wisdom and priviledge to ask for wisdom come from God?

There is no good thing that does not come down from Him.

A. It was predestinated that Christ bear our sins. It was also predesinated that all who believe should not perish, but have eternal life

B. I never said God predestined people to go to hell. Neither did the Remonstrants. We are talking about articles of Remonstrants. The Remonstrants said nothing that you just posted, nor did I

Art. 2 begs the question, 'why do some believe and others refuse unless some are 'less sinful' than others?'

Art. 3 sets up a conundrum, 'we must believe to be born again'/ but how can we believe without illumination from His Spirit (Mat 16:17)? Does God illuminate everyone as He did with Paul?

Art 4 Grace is irresistible when God comes to us in His raw power, but because He deals with us through the means of grace (e.g. the Gospel), this grace can be resisted.

Art 5 de-neuters God's power and intention of keeping to the uttermost those who have come to him (Heb 7:25) and have become His children through the new birth. (Heb 12:5-11).

(Neither do I wholeheartedly hold to the Canons of Dordrecht.)

Amen and amen. I couldn't of said it better. The Bible is very simple, yet deep at the same time.

This is one of the other dangers I have noticed with Calvinism. Take for example a person addicted to alcohol, if they took Calvinism to its full logical conclusion, they would just sit and wait for God to change their desire for alcohol. If that does not occur and the man keeps failing to stay sober, perhaps he just was not one of the elect?
If one believes as I do, all you need to do is repent and you know the struggle will be there, but you also know that the longer you go the less the temptation, you know temptation is not sin and you know God will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you can bear and has always provided a way out.

This leaves all of us without excuse. Truly without excuse, but in Calvinism everything is decreed by God, and in everything that would include our sins too.

This is a very dangerous theological system, but practically speaking the vast majority of them believe in free will and operate within it each day of their life and do not take it to the fullest logical conclusion.

That is exactly where the errors of Reformed Theology began. "Everything is decreed by God". But that is NOT what the Bible reveals. While everything is indeed in God's hands, and He is indeed sovereign over the universe, some things are DECREED (God's perfect will) and many things are ALLOWED (God's permissive will).

The best example is the crucifixion of Christ. His offering for sin as the Lamb of God was decreed from before the foundation of the world (1 Peter 1:18-20). However evil men were allowed to develop their evil machinations against Christ, but they were also held fully accountable for being betrayers and murderers of Christ (Acts 7).

Pilate -- a weak and vacillating man -- knew that Christ was innocent and actually wanted to release Him. But he succumbed to the rabble and the rabble rousers, and condemned Christ against his own will and against Roman law. But God did not hold Pilate accountable. Rather He held the evil Jews accountable. But He allowed them to do what would actually fulfill His own plan of salvation.

Ask if article 1 of the Remonstrance suggests some are more sinful than others.

Article 1
That God, by an eternal and unchangeable purpose in Jesus Christ his Son, before the foundation
of the world, hath determined, out of the fallen, sinful race of men, to save in Christ, for Christ’s sake,
and through Christ, those who, through the grace of the Holy Ghost, shall believe on this his son Jesus,
[this part above is sound, and I can pick no error in it ]

and shall persevere in this faith and obedience of faith, through this grace, even to the end; and, on
the other hand, to leave the incorrigible and unbelieving in sin and under wrath, and to condemn
them as alienate from Christ, according to the word of the Gospel in John 3:36:
[similarly I see to error in this part above to me it agrees with scripture and with the Canons of Dordt]


“He that believeth
on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath
of God abideth on him,” and according to other passages of Scripture also. [2]
[this is scripture above , who can fault it.]

So as far as article 1 goes I see no problem in it. This is quite a different take than modern day Arminianism
though, who teach Jesus died and atoned for all, he did in a sense, he died to call all men. But not all will be saved
only a predestined people will be saved out of the mass of humanity through the ages. And those are His chosen
people. The Jews were a chosen people but not all them are saved or will be saved. But those who are born again
of the Spirit of God most certainly are saved and will endure to the end. Vessels of wrath and vessels of honour.
All Christians are chosen of God, loved of God and He will allow no one to pluck them from His hands.

And yes there are degrees of sin and wickedness. Not all are as wicked
as can be, thankfully God's grace preserves them. Others are handed over
victims to their own lust and hatred to their total fall.

In John chapter 10 the Lord says this:

26 But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you.

27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish,
neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.


29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all;
and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.


30 I and my Father are one.

31 Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him.
