Does entering into Jesus' rest mean we're to give up the Sabbath day? Is the 4th commandment part of the moral law of God?

Rest is NOT working at the law. Sabbath keeping is working at the law.

Ceasing from work is exactly that. Ceasing does NOT mean continue to work.
That is right. Through Christ's Rest which is the Gospel we now stand in and through HIS righteousness. And because of that.

There remaineth therefore a rest (Sabbath keeping) to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest (the Gospel), he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.
(Heb 4:9-10 KJV)

Verse 10 says we who have entered into HIS Rest, we ALSO (in addition) cease from our own works as GOD did from HIS

How do we cease from our own works?

As GOD did from HIS. That is the REST we are to enter. HE stopped working on the Seventh Day. So we stop working on the Seventh Day. That is how GOD did from HIS. He did not cease doing HIS own works of righteousness. . He is our righteousness through Faith; through Christ. He is Holy and so are we through the Gospel Rest.

HE STOPPED WORKING ON THE SEVENTH DAY. Plain and simple. So we stop working on the Seventh Day AS HE DID because we now stand in the righteousness of Christ through Faith.

NOT I BUT CHRIST.

For we are dead nevertheless we live Yet not but Christ liveth in us and the Life we now live in the flesh we live by the faith of the Son of GOD who gave himself for us.

NOWHERE does the New Testament teach that keeping the Sabbath day is binding on Christians under the New Covenant.
Except for here....

How do we cease from our own works? Answer, when we meet with the Father, the same as God in the flesh went to be with the Father, his life work completed.

Hebrews 4:9 - So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God. (NASB) Notice that the Greek word "sabbatismos" is used no where else in the Bible. Amazing that SDA's would suggest that this is the word for "keeping the weekly Sabbath" when it is never used anywhere else, in spite of the many references to Jews keeping the weekly Sabbath in the New Testament!

W. E. Vine, Greek Dictionary proves the Sabbatarian argument wrong:

KATAPAUSIS (2663), in classical Greek, denotes a causing to cease or putting to rest; in the N.T., rest, repose; it is used (a) of God's rest, Acts 7:49; Heb. 3:11, 18; 4:1, 3 (twice), R.V. (1st part), "that rest" (the A.V., "rest," is ambiguous), 5, 11; (b) in a general statement, applicable to God and man, 4:10.

SABBATISMOS (4520), a Sabbath-keeping, is used in Heb. 4:9, R.V., "a Sabbath rest," A.V. marg., "a keeping of a Sabbath" (akin to sabbatizoµ, to keep the Sabbath, used, e.g., in Ex. 16:30, not in the N.T.); here the Sabbath-keeping is the perpetual Sabbath rest to be enjoyed uninterruptedly by believers in their fellowship with the Father and the Son, in contrast to the weekly Sabbath under the Law. Because this Sabbath rest is the rest of God Himself, its full fruition is yet future, though believers now enter into it.

Colossians 2:16 -Therefore no one is to act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day— 17 things which are a mere shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ.

Hebrews 4:10 says the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His. That person has entered in God’s rest through Jesus "rests from his own work" (in contrast of trying to keep the Law) as God ceased or rested from His works in the seventh day of Creation. God's ultimate, true rest did not come through Joshua or Moses, but through Jesus Christ. Joshua led Israel into the promised land, which was merely the earthly rest which was but a shadow of what was involved in the heavenly rest. The rest in Christ that God offers is spiritual and is superior to that which Joshua obtained. Israel's earthly rest was filled with conflict and attacks from their enemies and the daily cycle of work. The "sabbatismos" rest enjoyed uninterruptedly by believers in their fellowship with the Father and the Son, in contrast to the weekly Sabbath under the Law, is found only in Christ and not Law keeping.

Although for centuries the Jews had found their physical rest in a day, the New Covenant takes the focus off the shadows of the Old Testament signs and rituals and reveals their spiritual substance -- the fulfillment/reality—in the person of Jesus Christ. (Colossians 2:16-17) Christians find complete Sabbath "sabbatismos" rest in Christ's finished work on the cross. The New Testament Sabbath rest is entered into by ceasing from one’s "works" of trying to earn salvation though keeping the Law. Paul explains that the Jewish holy days, including the weekly Sabbath, were merely a “shadow” which pointed to Christ; therefore, Christians should not feel obligated to observe them once the “reality” has come (Colossians 2.16-17). Because the New Testament writers never reiterate the Sabbath command as they do the moral principles contained in the other 9 commandments, Christians are not obligated to observe a literal weekly Sabbath day which was a sign between God and Israel (Exodus 31:16-17) and in Deuteronomy 5, Moses restates the Ten Commandments to the next generation of Israelites. Here, after commanding Sabbath observance in verses 12–14, Moses gives the reason the Sabbath was given to the nation Israel: “Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the Lord your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day” (Deuteronomy 5:15).

HE STOPPED WORKING ON THE SEVENTH DAY. Plain and simple. So we stop working on the Seventh Day AS HE DID because we now stand in the righteousness of Christ through Faith.
*Show me just one verse in the New Testament where Christians are commanded to keep the Sabbath day or condemned for failing to do so. Why are you so obsessed with the Sabbath day?

Believers stand in the righteousness of Christ through Faith and not through "grace plus law, faith plus works." Romans 4:5 - But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness, 6 just as David also describes the blessedness of the man to whom God imputes righteousness apart from works.

Romans 10:1 - Brethren, my heart’s desire and my prayer to God for them is for their salvation. 2 For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not in accordance with knowledge. 3 For not knowing about God’s righteousness and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

Philippians 3:9 - and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith.

NOT I BUT CHRIST.

For we are dead nevertheless we live Yet not but Christ liveth in us and the Life we now live in the flesh we live by the faith of the Son of GOD who gave himself for us.
Keep reading - I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died needlessly.”

Because we now rest in and through Christ there ALSO remaineth a Sabbath keeping for us who are GOD's people. There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. (Heb 4:9-10 KJV)

Jesus said, "Come unto me and I will give you rest." Yes, the rest is present tense, now and in the future. We are saved eternally and are RESTING in the love of Christ and HIS finished work. Those people who trust in Christ have ALSO ceased from their own works. You haven't.

So stop going on about it as though it is a duty that HAS to be done. Doing things because we feel we have to, becomes work.

We cannot earn our salvation by anything we do. It is solely by faith alone. Be like the passenger in a car and trust the driver. Sit back in the seat and put your trust in the driver of your life, Jesus Christ. He will see you through.

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. (Pro 3:5-6 KJV)

Amen! The Gospel has nothing to do with weekly Sabbath keeping under the law, but has everything to do with trusting in the death, burial and resurrection of Christ as the ALL-sufficient means of our salvation (1 Corinthians 15:1-4; Romans 1:16; 1 Corinthians 1:21). (y)

By confusing keeping the weekly Sabbath under the law with the believers perpetual Sabbath rest (Sabbatismos) that is to be enjoyed uninterruptedly by believers in their fellowship with the Father and the Son, lightbearer is teaching a "different" gospel. :cautious:

I think it's pretty clear that my Sabbath is 7th day rest Sabbath God spoke about at the end of His creation week... never was any dodging. Although I did own a Dodge Charger once it was the worst car I ever owned bought it new and it was a lemon off the lot...

So not very fond of Dodges...
My dad let me drive his brand new 1971 Dodge Charger to see my first girl friend who lived in Flint which is about 60 miles north of Detroit where I lived at the time when I was only 16 at the time. It was on a Sunday. The Sabbath is every Saturday because it's the 7th day of the week.

The Part highlighted in bold text above is the definition. VINES DEFINES THE WORD AS, "A SABBATH KEEPING" THEN HE GIVES THE A.V. Hebrews 4:10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.

The definition of this rest is given in this same verse. We also cease from our works as God did from His.

Genesis 2:2-3
2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

Matthew 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

The rest that the Lord Jesus Christ gives us is real rest. Its not more work at the law, such as trying to keep a Saturday sabbath.

God didn't decide to rest every Saturday in honor of His ceasing of His Work. He rested every day after the 7th as well.

It is only the Law, the 10 commandments, that command people to keep a Saturday sabbath.

Galatians 3:2-3
2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?

It was a false accusation. Doing works of righteousness is rest.
Through Christ We don't stop from doing the work of the Father; righteousness which is that of the Spirit. It is our Rest. It is the Gospel in which we partake through HIS Spirit.

Since the seventh day Sabbath is simply a symbol or shadow of the true spiritual rest that believers have in Christ, the writer of Hebrews would have no logical reason to stress the keeping of the weekly Sabbath under the law in Hebrews 4:9. As with the Promised Land, the Sabbath day was a mere shadow that prefigured the coming reality, the spiritual rest of the Christian in Christ.

The spiritual rest of salvation which God’s people are entering is "sabbatismos" a "sabbath keeping" in the sense that it is a participation in God’s own "rest," which we enter by faith. (Hebrews 4:3) Anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from His. (Genesis 4:10). The "sabbatismos" rest of God described in Hebrews 4:9 refers to the salvation "rest" into which all Christians have entered. As W.E Vine points out - Because this Sabbath rest is the rest of God Himself, its full fruition is yet future, though believers now enter into it.

The weekly Old Testament Sabbath is a shadow the spiritual "rest" Christians have in Christ (Colossians 2:16-17). This may explain why the writer of Hebrews coined the word "sabbatismos," making a play off the word for the Sabbath day "sabbaton."

Now although God's rest on the seventh day did foreshadow a future Sabbath law, there is no Biblical record of the Sabbath before the children of Israel left Egypt. *Nowhere in Scripture is there any hint that Sabbath keeping was practiced from Adam to Moses.

The original plan was to rest in God every day, as there was no command to specifically keep the seventh day holy prior to Exodus 16:23, which was a command for Israel. (Exodus 16:23; 31:16-17; 35:1-3; Deuteronomy 5:15; Nehemiah 9:13 etc..) God intended for humanity to live resting in Him. Hebrews 4 restored the original plan for those in Christ. (y)

In Hebrews 4:2-3, we read - For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it. For we who have believed do enter that rest.. (See 1 Corinthians 15:1-4; Romans 1:16; 1 Corinthians 1:21).

Why is it SO important for you to believe that Christians MUST keep the weekly Sabbath day under the new covenant which was for Israel under the law in the old testament and what do you believe the consequences are for those who do not? What exactly are YOU trusting in for salvation?

There remaineth therefore a rest (Sabbath keeping) to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest (the Gospel), he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.
(Heb 4:9-10 KJV)
Nothing like adding to Scripture, huh?

Oy vey...... I came from this judaizing background, take it from me, its no bueno. Not kosher at all!
I still keep my diet kosher, but I dont ever tell anyone else to do so. Nobody is saying its FORBIDDEN to keep kosher, to keep the sabbath, to keep the biblical feasts or ANY of the other things hebrew roots people love to do.

What we are saying is: you are in ERROR by demanding others do it, or else they are in sin. (And in sometimes unsaved devils taking the mark of the beast, depending on the brand of heresy)

Good question. It sounds to me as though he is trusting for salvation in a "what" and not a "Who."

Since the seventh day Sabbath is simply a symbol or shadow of the true spiritual rest that believers have in Christ, the writer of Hebrews would have no logical reason to stress the keeping of the weekly Sabbath under the law in Hebrews 4:9. As with the Promised Land, the Sabbath day was a mere shadow that prefigured the coming reality, the spiritual rest of the Christian in Christ.

they trust Sabbath/ Law keeping for salvation.

as lightbearer keeps sighting vines's translation, keep in mind William vines made statements that " human tampering " had marred Scripture.

sounds like he could have had an agenda when he wrote his translations....
