I don't think God's word (prophecy) is apposed to spiritual gifts, unseen .Just the idea of sign gifts,
Scripture disagrees with you, as I have noted previously:

1 Corinthians 12:1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.
4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
10-11 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

1 Corinthians 14:22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign

Tongues are a gift, and a sign... ie. a "sign gift".

The whole tongues discussion is all about those few who want as a sign to confirm they have received something from the Holy Spirit and call it a sign gift.
No, that's your narrow misinterpretation of the discussion. That isn't what I believe, and it isn't what many people believe.

If its not in respect to a sign to confirm something, then what?

A sign that confirms what and in respect to who?

Is going to church a sign gift that confirms a person has the Holy Spirit? Does reading the Bible confirm a person has the Holy Spirit dwelling in them or wearing a cross?

John 4:48 Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.

What sign does John 4 reveal. Those who mock God?

is denying scripture and making up your own narrative mocking God?

how about addressing the detailed response I gave you in reply to your question?

gonna do that or not?

here it is again in case you cannot find it:

13 For this reason the one who speaks in a tongue should pray that they may interpret what they say.

14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.

15 So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my understanding; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my understanding.

16 Otherwise when you are praising God in the Spirit, how can someone else, who is now put in the position of an inquirer, say “Amen” to your thanksgiving, since they do not know what you are saying?

17 You are giving thanks well enough, but no one else is edified.

18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. I Corinthians 14

Regarding 1 Cor.14:21-22:

you will find tongues and prophecy mentioned together quite a few times in scripture and there is even note of speaking in 'angel tongues or tongues of angels'.

YOU are hung up on the word PROPHECY and DO NOT UNDERSTAND that the word is NOT always mean to foretell the future.

Prophecy also means to FORTHTELL...expound on the Bible or deliver a message that is above the knowledge of the one speaking.

Paul makes mention of unbelievers hearing tongues and being converted...as per Acts or a per interpretation that would convict the unbelieving hearer.

1 Cor 14:26 How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.

the point Paul is making is in reference to the unbeliever in a church hearing tongues being used improperly. never ever does Paul say do not use the gift of tongues; rather his emphasis is on using it properly and within the context of instructions so as to benefit the hearer

once again, I have engaged you in this type of discussion a number of times and you are not in the habit of acknowledging answers which indicate your comprehension of the meaning of prophecy in the context used, is faulty

I do not respect you saying things like It would seem it is you that is choking by not giving the answer to what the sign confirms and who it is speaking to?

rather than respond to what I write, you now change your tact and try to accuse me of not being able to answer you which is utter nonsense, ESPECIALLY in light of the previous exchanges we have had

if you cannot respond to my actual answer rather than twist what I say or ignore it altogether, it shows, quite adequately, that you CANNOT answer, you do not understand and can offer nothing to rebuff other than your constant musings on prophecy

I have answered your question regarding what Paul means but I don't at all believe it will satisfy you, again, because you DO NOT UNDERSTAND how the word prophesy is being used or the fact it has more than one meaning in scripture

I have entertained this type of thing from you in the past, but you know, it's enough. rattle on but not to me unless you actually wish to discuss the above IN CONTEXT without changing or twisting what I wrote

What does the sign of tongues confirm?
tongues in Acts 2:4 is evidence of receiving the Holy Spirit

the gift of tongues is for the church

tongues are both a sign for unbeievers and a spiritual gift

you know the drill. you have had these passages given to you mulitple times in other threads and you are still feigning ignorance

or is your comprehension even worse than thought?

you can make up whatever you want, but the Bible, which you purport to believe, denies your interpretation

Red herrings all.

Let's deal with the basics first: does the Scripture call "tongues" a gift and a sign?

what a merry go round

kindly respond to my response to the question you asked

if you don't, it will begin to seem you have no interest in actually discussing, but just keep trying to prove the Bible does not say what it does say

you directed a question at me, I supplied a detailed answer...so respond to it...and not with one of your sarcastic one line zingers

I don't understand why he keeps denying this
I don't deny it. It think it needs to be defined

How many spiritual gifts can God use at one time? Can one person be used in giving all that are mentioned. Does the gift of brining the gospel( prophecy)as a Apostle (sent one) need two people with separate gifts ?

Can God work a miracle through beautiful feet of one that bring the gospel (prophecy)?

Or is it one gift per person. One at a time.

Perhaps we should discuss. Is God served by human hands in any way shape or form

He calls the sign of stammering or mocking lips a curse to those who refuse to hear prophecy in any language .Yet for all that they who mock still refuse to believe the word of God (prophecy)

The gift of hearing prophecy in all the tongues of the world is a gift not seen .It works in the heart of the believer to both will and do the good pleasure of God. No outward sign just a changed heart ready to serve God.

Detailed? Is the sign for those who believe the word of God (prophecy) or those who do not? Two choices. yes or no

Yes I know what a sign is (not prophecy) Prophecy is for those who believe. Signs for those who believe not prophecy .

Jesus said its an evil generation natural unconverted man that seeks after one. The sign that comes with prophecy is they believe God as he softens their hearts. Prophecy apposes those who heart remains hard, as in we refuse to hear God's word and believe.

Sign gifts were to the Jews
God has dealt with signs and miracles for the JEWS since the beginning
Sign gifts in the bible were BY Jews TO Jews
The sign gifts ceased with the last apostle (Jew by nationality) died.

The objective of this thread when I started it was only to encourage people to pray in Tongues. This encouragement comes from 40 years of seeking God. Whether you groan in the Spirit, pray in your native tongue, or pray in Tongues they all have purpose. This thread was not meant to cause division. If you don't pray in Tongues that's your business. We are not to forbid tongues or promote it in an unbalanced way. Again, I encourage those who speak in Tongues to activate this gift afresh. GRACE & PEACE
I'm sorry your forum got off the track you meant for it. That's how forums go.
You state your opinion and others get to state theirs.
I encourage people to read their bibles and grow in grace and truth.
