Sounds like you have a good group of people. The body of believers I am a part of are also wonderfully involved in the work of our great God. I am so thankful for that!
I think this story is meant to be somewhat of a spiritual parable. The belief that simple saying “I have faith in Jesus Christ” is enough to stand in heaven one day is not the doctrine of Jesus Christ. Rather He taught in Matthew 7:
21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
Like the man in the story, there are many today who preach that Christians have a claim to Eternal life if they will but admit He is the Christ. Repentance and personal accountability are excluded. The story is meant to demonstrate how spiritually restrictive that false teaching is. In fact, like the man in the story, it will lead to a very unnecessary spiritual death.
So the question should be answered, what do we need to feel (faith) and do (works) to receive eternal life? What do you believe the Savior taught on that subject?
