Peter was sent by God on every occasion and signs and wonders followed the disciples and the 1st century church because then, the antichrist was not on the scene. It was the work they were given to complete by Jesus that the antichrist was held back until they finished witnessing. The signs and wonders then helped them in spreading and witnessing about the kingdom.

Mark 16: 17And these signs will accompanythose who believe: In My name they will drive outdemons; they will speak in new tongues; 18they will pick up snakes with their hands, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not harm them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will be made well.”

This is what they were promised but when the antichrist steps in the scene, he comes with fake signs so the genuine signs have to cease or at least be private because God is not a God of confusion.

For those of us who know, these things continue to this day.

Since you have made up your mind that they have ceased, for you that is exactly what has happened. Because of your unbelief you will never experience them. But praise God that you believe in satanic tongues.

There is a language that the speaker does not know but which is an earthly language, and there is a language that the speaker speaks which is not an earthly language. Personal tongues, because it is personal and not meant for public hearing, is an other worldly language.

Those things would continue happening as long as the antichrist was being held back so that the apostles and disciples would finish witnessing about the gospel to all tribes. As soon as they had finished their mandate, the antichrist comes accompanied by fake signs and wonders to deceive many. The genuine signs had to cease, for God is not God of confusion.

There's a long list in Mark 16 all accompanied those who believe then, you can't say that we are only left with tongues as the most flourishing sign.

Even this group thought they knew:

Matt 7:21Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name drive out demons and perform manymiracles?’ 23Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you workers of lawlessness.

It's not that their gifts were fake. The problem is they never grew up in Christ to a mature knowing of Christ and fell away, their lawless lives being the evidence of that. No amount of service for God through a gift can make up for the lawlessness of one's personal life.

Unless you can provide one, there is no distinction in the Bible. Speaking in tongues is speaking in tongues.

Do a little research. While admittedly this is a controversial subject, I do not believe Mark 16:9-20 are original.

Also, we are not only left with tongues. There are the other 8 manifestations as well.

I'm not dogmatic about it. It's a non issue to me. I just know from my own experiences in the church that personal tongues is other worldly sounding. Rapid, repetitive stammering, not a distinction in sounds and syllables like in a human language.

I've heard tongues that sound very much "human". Also, there are some languages in some parts of the world that are very guttural, almost non-human sounding.
 
It's odd to me to hear someone say they know for a fact that the Holy Spirit never manifests anymore. Or that He never manifests in certain ways anymore. It's quite bizarre when you think about it.

I've been saying this repeatedly in these forums: We have to stop measuring everything and everybody by our own experiences. The natural tendency of us humans is to think that if it ain't that way for us then it ain't that way for anybody else, and vice versa. This flaw in us humans is the source of a lot of disagreement about spiritual and doctrinal matters.

Just because the Spirit is not manifesting in us doesn't mean it's not in somebody else's life either. People who believe are the ones who receive.
 
Yes. And not to mention the fact that if you definitively state all tongues spoken today are 100% counterfeit, you can't know that unless you've visited every gathering on earth!

Since we are on the subject of tongues with that of being associated with that of the Holy Spirit then I feel like we need to address the issue of being slain in the spirit which it seems to always follow those who hold fast to speaking in tongues. This truly is a sight to see and yet these poor people do not understand the whole implication of this action that is happening to them.
