The Taurus 709 slim might work really well for a pocket type thing... I have it's fatter brother, the PT111 G2 as my EDC.
Slam Taurus all you want, but mine has been literally flawless... no FTE, FTF/F... nothing. I've run every bullet weight, cheap or pricey through it. I can't remember if I've tried any of the steel cased stuff, but everything else just goes bang.
Trigger pull is acceptably good... just a little bit of creep. Accuracy is better than necessary.
I'm probably at around 1200 rounds through it right now.

So... I assume you drive a Maybach? Or, perhaps a Bugatti? 
Some of us have champagne taste, but a beer budget....
If I had the fundage to buy whatever I wanted, pistol-wise, I imagine I would probably go with a Sig, or H&K... possibly one of the custom 1911's.
But, my finances being what they are, I have to find a lower price-point reliable pistol... key word... reliable. My Taurus pistols have proven to be so.
Higher cost usually (not always) simply means better fit and finish. Many of the low cost firearms are dead reliable. High Point comes to mind. My cheapo Norinco SKS has NEVER failed to fire/feed/eject.
Of all my Taurus pistols, the only problem I had was with the TCP and the slide hold-open tab being too long, getting nudged by the bullets advancing up the magazine, occasionally locking the slide back prematurely. Just a design flaw. I filed the tab down until I got no more premature lock backs, and it's been fine ever since.

You're talking about a $1,000 gun vs cars that cost hundreds of thousands.
$1,000 ain't that much money.
I know people who cough that much up to make two payments on their
brand new diesel pick-up that they drive around empty 99% of the time.

If you have an extra grand sitting around I happen to have a Soviet SVT40 that would like to have a home and $1k would be a great price, that's shipped to your ffl of course.

LOL.... I was poking fun at the "always buy the best" mentality.... I KNOW you don't have that mentality about everything... that's why I was poking fun at it....
I AGREE with you... if you can afford it, get it. I spent almost $600 on a .380 for my wife... she wanted that one, so it was worth it to me. It was a Sig, also...
