The gun range where I target practice will only allow brass casings. That is a good price!
Yes... Cabela's does that sort of sale pretty frequently. A lot of times they have the Blazer Brass ammo for about the same price. Sometimes, Fiocchi or Sellier & Bellot...
I've shot all of those with good results.
It's so cheap, it's almost difficult to justify reloading it. I still reload it, but it's nice to know that factory ammo is available for such a good price.

I'll have to check them out... is that maybe "Target Sports" ? I've gotten emails from them...
Perhaps because a lot of ranges will sell brass for scrap, or reloading, and maybe they get a better price if they can guarantee that it's all brass... especially if they are selling it by weight. Just a guess....

Gunsmith is correct.A gunsmith tried to tell me that there is not much difference between a 9mm and a 40 caliber and if you are going to step up from a 9mm, you might as well go for a 45 caliber. I always thought that a 40 caliber was right between a 9mm and a 45 caliber. Does anyone else agree with that gunsmith?
It's not about caliber, it's about pressure.
9mm and .45 are low-pressure rounds.
.40 is more like a magnum load, e.g., louder, more recoil, harder to shoot
accurately, harder on the wrist, more expensive, more penetration.
It was developed specifically for law enforcement after the '86 Miami
FBI shootout, however many departments are moving back to 9mm
since both the guns and ammo have significantly improved since then.
The 45 ACP is definitely a lower pressure round, at 23,000 CUP for +P loads. The 40 S&W has a maximum set at 35,000 CUP, but the 9mm is the highest pressure loading, with a maximum of 38,5000 CUP.
The 45 is also the slowest, at about 850fps for the standard "ball" load. The 9mm will push a 124gr bullet at around 1200fps. The 40 shoots a 180gr bullet at about the same as the 124gr 9mm.
It's important to know that NO handgun cartridge is a "magic" kind of thing. So many factors play a role in the use of a firearm against a human... There are documented cases, one in particular of a man that was shot 6 or 7 times in the back with a 45 ACP, and drove himself to the hospital and recovered with minimal issues.
A recent case actually caught on video was a law enforcement officer who was doing a traffic stop who was shot by the perp with a .22 pistol. The LEO shot the perp several times with his service pistol (I THINK it was a 9mm...). The LEO then called for backup, and then staggered and sat down... and died. The perp survived, after hitting the LEO with one tiny .22 bullet, in the heart.
All I know is, that I hope I NEVER have to find out what it's like to be involved in a shooting.

hello hornetguy, I recognized your name and I saw the gun chat logging in and even though I've never owned a, just thought you might be interested in something someone told me recently about this area in Alaska-- they said that there are 44,000 Veterans with guns here!
I guess that could either be comforting, or distressing, depending on which side of the debate you are on--
What debate? I always thought a debate involved 2 or more sides discussing an issue to be resolved, I believe any issue with firearms in America involves one side that is walking out their freedom and the other side that wants to take away that freedom.

Yes, it difficult to predict what a bullet will do when it strikes a "hard" object. The angle of the impact, the type of bullet, etc...
I've seen videos of LEO's shooting at suspects in cars, and it seems that most of the bullets penetrate. But, nearly any round nose, fmj bullet will ricochet if it strikes at a glancing angle.
HeraldTN.... It wouldn't bother me at all to have all of those armed Veterans living nearby. I'd feel relatively secure, I imagine, PTSD notwithstanding. I know that many of them come home in a rather precarious mental state, but I cannot bring myself to treat them as some kind of pariah because of it. I'd rather try to be friends with them, and try with any of my limited ability to help bring them "back down" to domestic life...
We owe them that, at the VERY least... to be welcomed home, and be treated as normally as possible.

The search for my wife's new pistol is now over.
We have adopted a Sig Sauer P238, with the 7 round magazine.... She can operate the slide easily, and she likes the controls.. this model also has a rubber grip with a slight palm swell, that makes it fit her hand much better...
We looked at several different types at the BigTown gun show this afternoon, and when we found this one, and she handled it, she said ..."this is it!"... I haven't seen her "excited" about a gun before this. I'm pleased...

Smart lady.
I wouldn't own any semi-auto pistol other than Sig Sauer or Beretta.
I wouldn't throw rocks at a CZ or an H&K, or any number of 1911's... Ruger, Remington, etc....
My requirements of a pistol are pretty simple... it must fit me, ergonomically, and be completely dependable. Accuracy is not quite as big an issue, since I am unlikely to be engaging any "enemies" beyond about 20-25 yards. Anything beyond that would not really be viable in a defensive situation.
All of my pistols fit this description... and they are Taurus, Canik, and Smith and Wesson (revolver)....
For some reason, I have a "hankering" for a Ruger lightweight commander model in (gasp) 9mm... just because.
Yes... she's pretty excited about it. We both can't wait to get it out and shoot it... but she made me wrap it up so she could open it at Christmas and be "surprised"....
