Grammar and Spelling Mistakes

But then, most Americans probably don't use that good grammar neither.

Yes, English can lead to a lot of misunderstandings. (or you can allot a lot of mistakes to its understanding) Surprisingly, beginning writers (aspiring authors) tend to believe a common falsehood. They assume that creating long, compound sentences demonstrates skill in writing. This is not necessarily the case. In many instances, several shorter sentences will more clearly convey our hoped-for intent.

On this particular forum, I believe that most of our problems are caused by a lack of proofreading. Secondly, using cell phones (and the abbreviated wording associated with their usage) probably contributes to a large portion of the remaining number of errors.

Then....... sometimes we maybe just gots us some really dumb arze peoples a-posting.

Indeed Those abbreviated words can lead a person to think something that the other person didn't mean in that way.

who's fault is it the writer or the reader of such things?

Whose fault? Hard to say. The writers of the 1611 KJV wrote what was clear and accurate for them... yet, most of us in this day and age see it as terribly flawed and misleading.... however, they would not understand much of our language, today. Is either at fault?

Seriously, I think the people that type out what I see as careless nonsense, are perfectly legitimate in thinking that their "peers" (who communicate in the same discordant manner) will understand them completely.

Here's a example, WTF

Ok I know what some may think of the abbreviation but that is not what I'm thinking of (What The Freak)

Is this my fault or the person who translates the WTF to what they think it means, simple things like this can get people thinking other things..

Yes, that is the primary thing. But, I was thinking more along the lines of commonly used terms and phrases...... Such as, "Repentance", "Sanctification," "Acceptance," "Born in The Spirit," and a host of other words that may, or may not, hold different meanings for the writers of posts than they do for each of the readers.

I know these aren't "grammatical" issues, but they do seem to lead to much more serious and important misunderstandings.

Despite the interpretation of the specific "words", I think the understanding is kind of universally taken as being one of shock and surprise. And I think, in that sense, the expression used (whatever it is) is usually sufficient to get the message across.

I agree things can mean differently than what others think it means, then there's the power of persuasion through language, in another thread about a bible that has changed out the "with" for "toward" has lead to a complete misundestanding of verses in that bible. In my opinion Jesus spoke a lot in parables for the same reasons, as to not persuade thoughts in one direction or another.

shock and surprise over a meaning is usely from that persons experience with that language meanings rather it be correct or not I have no say as to what a person thinks of a word is meant to be. Language is extremely delicate, two people can say the same word but in two different tones of voice and all of a sudden the word has took on a whole different meaning.
 
"Murphy's Law" in written (and sometimes "verbal," too) communication is: "If something CAN be misunderstood, it WILL be misunderstood."

So............... We need to get over being lazy, and write-out enough words to make our meaning clear...... or at least, CLEARER.
 
Prescriptive vs descriptive..

In formal writing, ok
When I'm just chatting, I can care less that some stuffy people want to run me and tell me I'm not in correct grammar..

Look up grammar history. It hasn't always been so strict

I have 16 Teachers and/or Professors in my family. Grammar has always mattered to us.

But, decent communication is imperative. In my lifetime, I have probably hired 3,000 people. I have thrown three times that number of applications in the trash can because of careless grammar or spelling.
 
I am a member of a gun-type forum, where it became acceptable, almost expected, to talk VERY redneck/southern/hillbilly... whatever you want to label it..

It was very irritating to try to read, and just generally ticked me off.

I will, however, sometimes type out a word just the way I say it... but it's usually to make a point, or to add "flavor" to a conversation...

If I said "I'm fixin to go to the store", that's just the way I would say it...

I wouldn't say "Look, my darling, tell me that is not true"... I would say "Look darlin, say it ain't so...."

But, I know which is "proper" grammar, and which is not...

But some of the abbreviations, and just flat out wrong usage of words tend to irritate me..

I've caught that a few time in my own typing... usually because my brain moves faster than my fingers....

(neither of them are terribly fast, however)
 
Over the years, I have developed a habit of both writing and reading sentences with the same sort of inflection and pauses that I would use in everyday language. For this reason, I am a relatively slow reader. I try to read for understanding.

I look for punctuation. If a sentence needs a comma or some "quotations," I expect to see them...... and I read them into what my eyes travel over. If they are not there, I will sometimes simply quit trying to decipher the mess presented as "communication."
