Animals were not given by God to us as food until after the flood.
Not even then M. It was a concession. We were already eating meat. It wasn't that God after the flood said okay, go and eat meat now. No, we were doing it. It is no different then Israel planning to install a king. God didn't want them to do it, but they insisted. God knew they were going to, so He made a concession. He told Samuel not to be downcast. They were rejecting God, not Samuel.
That is another subject though. We all reject God in some form or another. Eating meat is just another form of ignoring his original command about diet.
