I have been a professing born again Bible believing Christian for almost
twelve years now. For the last nine of those twelve years I have been
speaking very openly online about my beliefs to people, both believers
and non believers, non believers more, actually, for the first eight of
those nine years, since I have only been here for a year. But I never
woke up one day with the thought that this is what God wants me
to do, and then went looking for a way to do it. It happened much
more organically than that. In fact, the first site I was on was completely
secular, and I had no idea there were even message boards when
I first got there, let alone a place where I could face the unbelievers
in their ridiculing, scoffing, spite, and scorn. I must admit I got hooked
right away, though. I found it challenging on many levels and I also
learned a lot as I went along. I found I had a real passion for it

1 Cor 14:29, "Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.
V 30, If anything be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.
V 31, For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.
V 32, And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.
V 33, For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints."

Pretty sure he was thinking about ways to maintain order within the congregational gatherings. Later on, he pretty much says this, sooooooooo

Paul was talking about the "gifts" and maintaining order in the assemblies,
Paul was talking in the previous verses about tongues,
But then begins speaking about the prophets and how to conduct themselves when they have something to say.
I would suppose that one might consider, that someone who is speaking in tongues, is speaking a "type" of prophecy, a revealing of some knowledge for edification, 1 Cor 14:28, "But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silent in the church;..."

WHO is the people with authority that say "there are no more prophets"? WHO is there that says the prophets of the New Covenant are different from the prophets of the OT? HOW can you demand scripture in other topics, & make these claims WITH NO SCRIPTURE AT ALL?
Oooh how I wish people would read their Bibles & quit listening to people in their denominations who wouldn't know the truth if it smacked them between their eyes!!

If you are going to scold others then you ought to make certain you know what you are talking about. Instead of proof texting why not consider the context of what Peter is saying. This is prophecy that Peter is citing and it sources from Joel 2. In the details it defines those who will prophecy and they are sons and daughters of Israel not sons and daughters of all flesh.
1 Cor 13:8 must be considered and it cannot contradict what Acts 2 is teaching. Your position cannot reconcile the two passages which can only mean that you are the guilty party.
Ro 2:1 Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.

On the other hand, Historically speaking, prophets don't usually live to a ripe old age, retire, go fishing, and spend time with the Grandkids.

I just got home from work and picked up my daughter for the weekend. I have not read all the replies, but I've read some of them.
I want to help people understand what I'm talking about here. I do not walk around the world telling everyone I'm a prophet (in the due course of time, I've realized that's what I am because the shoe fits and this forum is the only place I'm saying that's what I am). I'm not a seer or fortune teller. I do not have anything to add or take away from the Bible. I'm a born-again believer and follower of Jesus Christ. I follow the Bible and the Holy Spirit. I have very little to say in prophecy apart from what's in the Bible.
I've been given what I understand to be the mystery of the prophets. The understanding of the fulfillment of God's will through His word. I'm fully aware that I'm one of many thousands that have come before me saying similar things. I'm very much aware of that. Unfortunately, all the false prophets that have come before will be one of the many reasons why the mystery that has been revealed to me will be written off as untrue or just an interpretation. I will speak of what the Holy Spirit has revealed to me over 10 years ago, when I was in my early 20s.
The reason I started this thread was not to explain all this, but rather to ask what I asked in the title of the thread: "What is the point in being a prophet?" I would much rather share the hope and joy I have found in Christ rather than this message of judgment the Lord has laid on my spirit.
God did not hide what I've been called to reveal. In fact, He made it quite clear throughout His scriptures, but people refuse to accept the truth of it. I will explain what I can of this prophecy on the fly, but I could give a better explanation later with my notes.
This is the prophecy and the message the Lord revealed to me over 10 years ago and His Spirit has impressed upon me to share: In the Bible, in the book of Revelation, God talks about Mystery Babylon. America is Babylon. And God has raised up Russia to destroy Babylon (America) in divine judgment - COMPLETELY. After the destruction of America, the Great Tribulation Jesus warned about will begin.
This is as short as I can summarize for now. I can explain to you exactly how it all plays out according to the Word of God later, after my kid goes to bed and I get a shower.

God is no respecter of persons. Jews & gentiles received the baptism in the Holy Spirit. Did you forget gentile Cornelius' house?
Have you ever read about the church at Corinth..... predominately gentile church improperly exercising the gifts?
Paul NEVER separated the gentiles from the Jews when explaining anything about the gifts.
The Jews & gentiles are one in Christ.
You are exactly what I was talking about..... you have no idea what the Bible says on the gifts, nor the Holy Spirit Baptism.

The good news is you're not the first to come up with this one. (Russia will destroy America.) The bad news is people have been coming up with this sort of thing for 100 years and it constantly changes according to current events. It's not prophecy. It's bad exegesis of Revelation (and other taken-out-of-context verses) from believing the End-timers version of of christianity. I recommend finding a church that teaches the Bible instead of staying in a church that teaches end-time-prophecy is the bible.
My mind isn't made up on prophecy. I haven't studied it enough to get it and make up my mind. But 20,000 versions of future events that happened 2000 years ago? That I won't ever buy again. Been there. Believed that, and then I learned better.
Hubby saw old tracts that taught Germany would destroy the world, and then the Pope, and then and then. His BIL's MIL kept tracts through her 70 years of following that stuff.

This is what I'm talking about. Even if I spend the time to lay it out verse by verse and show you and everyone else the overwhelming truth of what I'm talking about, no one will believe me. This event will be so great and earth-shaking and world-changing that is foretold throughout the Bible many times. Upon request, I will show hundreds of Bible verses that lay out what I'm saying and what it all means, but if a person has already made up their mind not to believe, the truth matters little.
Humor me, pretend what I say is in fact a prophecy from the Living God and confirmed by His word (if you cannot allow yourself to believe), and tell me what good it is to be a prophet? No one will listen and no one will believe. I end up being the mad man of Hosea 9:7.
I'm not crazy, nor do I attend a church that preaches this message. My church is non-denominational and although we talk about the symptoms of our decadent culture, we don't typically bring up end-times prophecy as though we were living in those times. This is not something my church would want me to preach.
I hope I don't sound like I have an attitude, I've known these things for 10 years and knew from the first time the Lord revealed it to me that in the end, I would have to preach to people about the truth of Babylon. I'm surprised He has given us so much time really. As the years have went by, I've spoken about these things little by little and I have always met disbelief. No one has been able to accept the truth of this message. Simple people rarely know the Bible well enough to understand all the scriptures speaking about the things to come. And most, it seems, do not really care.
What good were any of the prophets in the end? Israel was still carried away into Babylon. Nineveh was eventually destroyed.
Jonah knew what God was going to do and He ran away. I can relate.
okay. I know that we are not to despise prophecy but when one claims them self a prophet it is misleading because it implies one is foretelling rather than forth telling
And from what you have now said about the many scriptures supporting you what you are about to say then is forth telling of what is already hidden in His Word I do not think you need to provide the scriptures; those born of His Soirit who know the Word of Truth should be able to bring to mind the scriptures you are referring to

The point of a prophet from God is to point to Jesus and salvation through His redeeming work on the cross. It is to proclaim the gospel. If that is not the message of a prophet, then he or she is a false prophet or a demonic soothsayer. Who is not to be listened to or heeded even if the signs they foretell comes true because they are sent to lead people away from God and His salvation instead of towards Him.

According to the Word, in Revelation, anyone who confesses Jesus Christ as the Savior of all who are saved can only make this confession due to the spirit of prophecy they have been given.
In part my response to the tile of this thread is basic. Beacuse we are saved by the Blood of Jesus Christ, being a prophet, or at least guided by the spirit of prophecy, is Life Itself in us and for us.
Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior. His Blood sanctifies me and all for life everlasting with Him in His Kingdom, amen.
There you have it; the spirit of prophecy......All who are saved hve this.
