Just the once, and not on his "increase". Only on the spoils of war, only one time.

On a related note, many people like to quote Genesis 28, wherein Jacob promised to give God one tenth of everything, as evidence for tithing today. The problem is that there is no record of Jacob ever fulfilling that vow, and it was made on his own initiative, not on God's command.
Hi Sir,

Even a single word is inspired word of God. A single occurrence does not invalidate it.

Thanks

Hi

Thank you for your opinion on this matter and "true, abram tithed" as the scriptures says

God bless
Why are we comparing booty from war to earnings/salary?

In addition, Hebrews 7 is referring to Genesis 14. Consider the rest of Genesis 14 after verse 20a:

And Abram gave him a tenth of everything. And the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the persons, but take the goods for yourself.” But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have lifted my hand to the Lord, God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth, that I would not take a thread or a sandal strap or anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich.’ I will take nothing but what the young men have eaten, and the share of the men who went with me. Let Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre take their share. -Gen 14:20b-24

Abram didn't give just a tithe. He gave everything that would otherwise have been his.

Also, where is there documentation of Aner, Eschol, and Mamre tithing? It should have been required from them as well.

What is your point? Yes, a single word of God is the inspired word of God. And out of context, it is a pretext.

"Judas went and hanged himself."
"Go and do thou likewise."
"What you are about to do, do quickly!"

Psalm 119:160: The sum of Thy word is truth. :)

God bless,
This has nothing to do with tithing as mis-taught in churches today.

The tithe Abram did was on war spoils, not on wages/salary. He went to war to save his nephew. He and the men who went with him won. He gave 10% as was customary for fighting a war in a foreign land.

He kept nothing for himself.

A proper(although false) application of the text would be to give ALL one's money to a church, not just 10%.

As I have stated before, as well, there were 3 tithes done by certain Israelites in O.T. times, not just one. A good Bible dictionary will reveal this.

:)

and in writing the post, I realized that as far as I can tell, Abraham only tithes that once... also I can't say who Abraham would've tithed to before or after...

I'm not sure who owns different parts of the booty in 20b... but abraham is giving to / returning to the king of Sodom.

R u guys missing something here? Abram didn't tithe on any of his own 'stuff'. So if you want to pattern after Abe's tithe, pay a tithe on someone's returned stolen property. Betcha never heard the preacher say that....why do you Suppose? Grow a brain folks...pu-lease!

quick question: if Jesus said we should do something, should we do it? of course we should and twice in the N.T he said we should tithe but not leave the weightier matters of the law undone
Matthew 23:23 (KJV)
[SUP]23 [/SUP] Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
[HR][/HR] Luke 11:42 (KJV)
[SUP]42 [/SUP] But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

I was preaching a campmeeting years ago in florida of all places and mentioned tithing in my sermon when a gentlemen in the back spoke out loud to some young people and said "that's not in the bible, that was a mosaic law" of course the young people told me.

the next night while preaching I said "some of the young people told me about a "tightwad" who spoke outloud and said tithing was a mosaic law" I said "Abraham tithed and he lived 400 years before moses and further more Abraham's name before tithing was abram, after he tithed God hung the ham on him and called him abraham.

"Tightwad". Hmmm. Read Galatians and Hebrews. And Acts 15.

Grace and peace, and no legitimate response to my question? Seriously?

When someone asks, "What's your point?" in a discussion, the intent is that you respond by explaining further what you said just before. So, what is the point of your statement, "Even a single word is inspired word of God. A single occurrence does not invalidate it."

Abram tithed to Melchizedek. Cain killed his brother Abel. Some things are simply narrative, not prescriptive.

How did you preach Lev 27:32-33? Numbers 18:20-32? Did you preach the three tithes mentioned in the O.T.?

the next night while preaching I said "some of the young people told me about a "tightwad" who spoke outloud and said tithing was a mosaic law" I said "Abraham tithed and he lived 400 years before moses and further more Abraham's name before tithing was abram, after he tithed God hung the ham on him and called him abraham.
Abram's tithe is in Gen 14. Abram becomes Abraham a few chapters later in Gen 17. Notice how God addresses Abram at the beginning:

When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty; walk before me faithfully and be blameless. Then I will make my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers.”

Abram fell facedown, and God said to him, “As for me, this is my covenant with you: You will be the father of many nations. No longer will you be called Abram ; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations. I will make you very fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you. I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you. The whole land of Canaan, where you now reside as a foreigner, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God.” -Gen 17:1-8

God doesn't say "Good job, Abram!" Instead, God says "Walk before me faithfully! Be blameless! Then I will make my covenant with you".

Text notes on Gen 17 will confirm that Abram had not been pleasing God in recent years.

The name change had nothing to do with Abram's tithe to Melchizedek. Abram wasn't being commended at the time God was addressing Abram about his new name.

Okay, here is what I meant when I said that, that there’s no need to rehash what I’ve said. You can go over the similar thread http://christianchat.com/bible-discussion-forum/128620-jesus-paid-your-tithe.html or re read post after post… By saying “Abram tithed…” you are just giving me the upper hand. What am I saying is the principle behind and we can give beyond the tithe that’s why it is called “Tithes and Offerings”. The offering we give is more than the tithe (10%) which Paul is admonishing believers to do it but give themselves first. There is that says a 100% is for the New Testament and I am not against it. But look, If a 100% is needed to give to the Lord so what will happen to you? You cannot even pay your bills maybe your internet connection fee. To note also, God does not actually need our money? God owns everything that is true in the O.T. and it is true in the N.T. The Nt. Principle is to give and give and give, sow a little reap a little, sow much then reap much. But I have a doubt to those who say 100% but now allow the 10%. Think about this, there will be no 100% without 10%.
Now, question is, Did Abram tithe? Yes your honor, and that’s what you’re saying on and on. In a trial court, the case is dismissed!
God bless you sir.

Proverbs 3:32 for the FROWARD is abomination to the Lord. But His SECRET is with the righteous.

FROWARD:Hebrew: Luz: to depart(from truth), to be devious, be deceitful, PERVERSE. (For fun and profit).

SECRET: Hebrew: sod: confidential talk, confidant.

God reveals these things to those who hunger for the truth, who thirst after Him. Who don't just sit comfortably feeding on Barnum and bunkum from the pulpit, one man and his word only. Refusing to be as the Bereans who searched, prayed, and studied to make sure what they were hearing is indeed the gospel truth!

Acts 20...speaking PERVERSE things. Perverse: Greek: diastrepho: to subvert (corrupt, destroy whole houses, families), make to turn away from the truth.

If these pot holes are gospel realities, why does most of the church respond to His warnings with a collective yawn? Hear the crickets? Scary!

I'm sounding the alarm. I'm shouting from the roof top. I've discovered the enemy....the enemies of the cross and it is the organized, streamlined, pre programmed, CEO gospel pimping, controlled 'church'.

I report, you decide. Be free. Come out from among them and find out Who He really is! You'll be shocked.

"Bunkum from the pulpit"? Yet you desire the pulpit for yourself.

Odd. Envy does great harm to one's mind.
