The largest mass shooting in United States history happened 130 years ago today, December 29, 1890. The U.S. Cavalry shot and killed 300+ American Indians on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, South Dakota, mostly women and children. 20 U.S. Soldiers were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor (which is the United States of America's highest and most prestigious personal military decoration that may be awarded to recognize U.S. military service members who distinguished themselves by acts of valor).
This facts, along with many others, are not taught to in our American public schools. So,
most Americans are deprived of the opportunity to learn from the horrible and sad parts of our history. Instead division remains because of our country’s secrets. However the truth will set us free and promote understanding, growth and healing for us who have faced a difficult past.
Today is a day of mourning for us Lakota/Dakota/Nakota & all First Nations. Each year, Horse riders ride from Standing Rock and Cheyenne River Sioux Tribes to the Pine Ridge Reservation to honor and recognize our ancestors who lost their lives at Wounded Knee. Wopila Tanka Big Thank You!
By 1890, pretty much all 100 million American Indians were either killed or sent to live on a reservation, by law. The main source of food (buffalo) was decimated from 30-60 million to down to less than 1,000 by 1890. So our ancestors danced and prayed in desperation, which many call the ghost dance. The U.S. Calvary didn’t understand and deemed the ghost dance a threat. This led to the U.S. Calvary killing our ancestors at Wounded Knee.
*Today, December 29, we mourn and carry on the legacy of our ancestors*
Please share and teach others, so we do not repeat our past. Instead, we must teach each other, especially our youth, so we can promote better understanding and respect for each other. It’s time to dismantle racist misunderstandings, and promote education and unity.
