JamOn, one of the girls working with me knows a doctor in Italy. Apparently the doctors there know from looking at a patient if he/she will make it or not. If they feel they won't make it, they don't get treated... (can't say if this is true or not)
Of course a doctor will know .. once this virus hits the lungs you need support breathing, only a relatively healthy person will survive with breathing support.

The problem is too many Italians smoke, poor lifestyle choices and they are many elderly people.

you are acting like they will not be treated from home, that is it not what the article is about people being left to die abandoned period
No one is going to treat you at home in Italy unless you have money to pay for the service.

Look buddy, I hear you. I am telling you what I have been told.

I have also heard that the statistics about the virus are sugar coated so that people don't go into a frenzy.

it is a real virus, I am not in denial you are, you seem to think you can add a day to your life
This does not mean we adopt some kind of fatalistic attitude, I am absolutely sure that God would want us to be mature and be diligent about things that can harm us.

You are all mouth and no real data to back up your insertions
I have given you the math (exponential increase over time) and the data and you have continually denied there is a problem.

And it also means not to create panic and fear and worry.

it is making threads that imply it is happening right now is wrong, 80 year old people are being sent home to die.

The article above really gets to the heart of the problem... even if the serious cases range about 1% that is enough to send the medical care into a situation where it will not be able to care for all the patients.

Seasonal flu is 0.1% and those who become seriously ill from it strain the health care system.

Then is not only the people who have the this corona virus that is the issue but when a system is strained what about all the heart aches and strokes, etc., etc., it will cause collateral damage as well.

This is why we need to be vigilant... because no health care system in the world is set up to deal with this, China locked down entire city with 50 cases.

sent back to their own home isn’t what is or will happen either,

from the article

It is also working to create new bed capacity in private clinics, nursing homes and even in tents.

Not looking too good for Italy though they most likely will have more deaths than China.

Italians over 80 'will be left to die' as country overwhelmed by coronavirus

Hardest-hit region drafts new proposals saying who will live and who will die

By

14 March 2020 • 4:38pm

Coronavirus victims in Italy will be denied access to intensive care if they are aged 80 or more or in poor health should pressure on beds increase, a document prepared by a crisis management unit in Turin proposes.

Some patients denied intensive care will in effect be left to die, doctors fear.

The unit has drawn up a protocol, seen by The Telegraph, that will determine which patients receive treatment in intensive care and which do not if there are insufficient spaces. Intensive care capacity is running short in Italy as the coronavirus continues to spread.

The document, produced by the civil protection department of the Piedmont region, one of those hardest hit, says: "The criteria for access to intensive therapy in cases of emergency must include age of less than 80 or a score on the Charlson comorbidity Index [which indicates how many other medical conditions the patient has] of less than 5."

The ability of the patient to recover from resuscitation will also be considered.

One doctor said: "[Who lives and who dies] is decided by age and by the [patient's] health conditions. This is how it is in a war."

I guess if you don't go by a lottery then that way is a logical conclusion .. I saw where the average age of CV deaths averaged 81 yrs old in Italy

Hmm there is a blood shortage because not enough people going to give blood, so the people going through surgeries might not be able to get blood causing another issue.

the blood bank has set up beds six feet apart to make people feel comfortable, even in a crisis somethings are still needed. take a chance and save a life go give blood someone else needs that also.

I figure I will get attacked by this view but I'll say it anyway. The bible says that a generation is 70 years, with strength 80. People around that age are already over the average life expectancy. If we are to choose between younger people with more life to live than people who are in their final years, the choice should be obvious. Would we like to save everyone? Sure. But if it comes down to resources , we need to keep the younger people alive.
I am in an at risk group - late '60s with a lung condition. There's a very good chance that I would decline health care for someone else.
However I want to be the one that makes that decision - after prayer - i do not want someone else to make that decision for me
