The Fellowship of the Apostles: Adjusting our thinking for the age of grace
Romans 2:3 And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?
This is a key thought, that we are all sinners, we are all saved by grace, but not to sin again, but to be delivered from sin. In the apostate church they are very strong to condemn anyone that judgest them that commit sins and yet they have the whole verse backwards. They think that since you should not judge others that we are now free to sin without being judged. That is not what they said. If judging others for sins is a sin, then condemning anyone who judges others for sins is hypocrisy. They claim to be inclusive but they exclude the apostles and the word of God. What Paul is saying here is much closer to "be strict with yourself and general with others". Paul is not saying that condemning sin is a sin, that would be absurd, Paul condemns sin. No, he is saying being a hypocrite where you publicly pretend to be a Christian while secretly living in sin, that will bring the judgment of God down on your head.
Romans 12:3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.
This is also quite interesting. Many think that you judge yourself based on the gifts given to you. But Paul didn't say that. The issue is not that this brother has a great gift and that brother doesn't. It is about faith, not gifts. Do you have the faith to take up the cross of Christ and follow Him even though it means death to your self and your flesh?
1 Corinthians 4:6 And these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to myself and to Apollos for your sakes; that ye might learn in us not to think of men above that which is written, that no one of you be puffed up for one against another.
This verse is mind blowing. On the surface Paul is simply comparing himself to another minister of Jesus Christ. No big deal really. However, Apollos is also the name of a Greek God which is a shadow of the AntiChrist. So on another level Paul is comparing himself to the Antichrist. What is the difference between a genuine Christian and the Antichrist? Pride. People will follow the antichrist because they "think of men above that which is written". Think about Hitler and the Nazi's, they were puffed up for one against another. That is why they killed Jews, Gypsies, Christians and the mentally ill in the Holocaust.
1 Corinthians 4:9 For I think that God hath set forth us the apostles last, as it were appointed to death: for we are made a spectacle unto the world, and to angels, and to men.
Can you imagine some brother telling you this? You would think he needs to go to God and get this straightened out. This is not Paul in a moment of weakness, this is the word of God. So flip this around, God is a master warrior, He did set forth the apostles last, they were appointed to death, they were made a spectacle to angels and to men. Why did He do that? Because there can be no doubt that what they were sharing was not for personal gain, or covetousness. Their testimony cost them something. In a world full of deceit it was important that this be the case.
1 Corinthians 7:36 But if any man think that he behaveth himself uncomely toward his virgin, if she pass the flower of her age, and need so require, let him do what he will, he sinneth not: let them marry.
What a contrast to this sinful, adulterous age. How many men get divorced or get a mistress because they think their wife "has passed the flower of her age"?
1 Corinthians 10:12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.
Paul is going through all the examples in the Old Testament of the Israelites sinning and being judged by God, being strewn about the wilderness. The Bible will adjust your thinking so that you are not proud, thinking you can stand on your own. It is by grace we stand, not of ourselves, not of our own strength, but of God and of the Holy Spirit within us.
2 Corinthians 3:5 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;
This isn't simply about sins, it is about everything. Last night I asked the Lord for direction in this ministry and I was given the verse "unto Him that is able to do abundantly above all that we ask or think" and that word "think" stuck out like a neon light. Hence, that is my focus this morning.
Galatians 6:3 For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.
That is the point of many of these verses.
