I mainly read from the KJV bible because to me I feel it’s the most authentic word of God, as far as English translation goes. I wish I could understand Hebrew. I also use the Holy Bible app and like to compare scripture using both KJV and NKJV. :giggle: I recommend the Holy Bible app btw, I’m hooked on the reading plans they have

I'm kind of torn, I grew up with the NIV, but have used the NLT for ages - God has used it in a big way in my life. I am however at the point where I think I like the idea of a more literal translation, so I'm spending time with the ESV. I may end up switching!

last year, I did a side by side reading of the NIV and the new KJV, and there are some differences ,

so, you might think of doing a side by side. I found it very interesting .

I started with KJV, NASB and Amplified.
- from the listings, I used all except CSB..
during my spiritual journey.
- Recently, NIV & NKJV.

Historical note: about Bible Translation.
William Tyndale started first English translation.
- It is known that some of his translation work was used
during KJV translation.
----
He was executed..because of
- Translating Bible.
- Speaking against church establishment at that time.
Maybe we need to be reminded that part of history.

I read/study using the Companion Bible, also called the Bullinger Bible. Is only on half the page though. As the other half of the page is full of notes pertaining to definitions, grammar, and references to 198 appendixes, which go even further in depth.
Using the "Bullinger" Bible, and Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible?
Far as I'm concerned? Can't get much better then that!

oh, I have been reading the NKJV for many years, and I also look at a lot of direct translations , so I do not depend on the NKJV alone .

and, I know the KJV only folks are going to punch me for this, I have nothing against the KJV, I just prefer to read modern English.

What I mean is, when you come to a passage and the different versions vary, how do you decide which is right? Thanks.

Remember, the NKJV was written more of a word for word. Where the NIV was written in a way to try to bring the old language to the new, in an expressive way/ Like the NLT. But yes, it is good to try to look at a few versions every now and then. Especially in problem passages,

Look to the greek or Hebrew. And if that does not help. Look to see what the rest of the bible says, Does it contradict any particular version, if so, we can rule that out.

Nope, just curious when people use multiple versions side by side, how they decide on which one to go with when there are differences, minor or major.

And when the Greek gives you four definitions, how do you decide which is best? And btw, the majority of versions contradict each other is some way.

Well of course they do. Thats why we should not take any english bible as mistake free. Or any verse outside of its context. Otherwise, I could make the bible say whatever I wanted it too.

Again, Scripture interprets itself

And context.

The greek may give a few possible defenition, but context would help us determine which one.

In order for Scripture to interpret itself, don't you have to have the correct words? I never want to be the determining factor on which words are correct and which are not.
