This ' good news ' is not the same as the good news we preach today.
luke 10
25¶And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

26¶He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou?

27¶And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.

I don't see where it says "don't be rich or you're going to hell." It's more like it says being rich makes it hard because of the spiritual corruption associated with being in love with money.

1 Tim. 6:10
10For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

It's not just being rich, its the way you live your life when your rich, what you did to become rich and what you'd do to stay rich. Not to mention all the people you could help with your money that you don't.

I think this is the heart of the gospel. We all will not be able to have eternal life because of this sin, but the Lord took care of that by the blood of Christ on the altar. God offered us life through Christ's blood. Even during those 4,000 years before Christ was crucified, through the shadow of Christ that the sacrificial system was, they were preserved until Christ spent those three days paying for our sins.

Of course you were. Repenting of sins means leaving the life of sin behind. If you didn't repent, you're still dying in your sins.

Yes, Jesus meant what He said........the KEY are the last four words......

"AND COME, FOLLOW ME"

Mark, Chapter 10:

21Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.


In order to do this, the young ruler would have to do what all other people have to do, and that is believe in and confess the name of Jesus.........so, he was not offered a different road to eternal life........... (IMO)

At first glance it would appear that Jesus is denying His divinity. However, He is doing just the opposite and is proclaiming to be God.

This took place within the old covenant. At that time, to receive eternal life one had to "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself." ie: obey the law.

From the same discussion from Matthew:

Mat 19:21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

One doesn't have to be "perfect", in the sense of giving away all one's money or things, to receive eternal life. I dare say NO ONE here has given away everything they own else what computer is everyone using to post here? What home and car is owned and not sold to give away? :)

Here we see only the requirements (at the time) to receive eternal life and there is nothing about selling everything you own and giving to the poor. That was only needed "to be perfect" which is akin to being more than the least in heaven.

To be perfect was "going above the call of duty" as they say. Getting an A on a test is not the same as getting an A+ is it?


Joh 3:15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

This applies to new Covenant times and there is no requirement to also sell everything you own. If you want to do that then more power to you as they say but one can receive eternal life and still own things.

You missed out the keeping of the commandments and selling everything . Do we have to do this today ? And do you think its the Gospel today , to tell people " pick up your cross and follow me " ?

I don't think you can receive eternal life and love your money and things above Christ, but I think God blesses people with money who love Him more than their money, and use their money to help others.

If everyone was in poverty, no one had the abundance that God speaks of, there would be one to give to charity.

the man calling God "rabbi" asks Him what he can "do" to earn eternal life.
so he clearly thinks he's capable of achieving righteousness before God through works.

does this man believe Christ is who Christ is?
