Does Jesus mean what he says here ?
18¶And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

19¶And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God.

20Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother.

21¶And he said, All these have I kept from my youth up.

22¶Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.

23¶And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich.

What do these verses say?
We here a lot about what these verses ' teach ' ,infer , assume , and imply . Many, many theologians and commentators teach what these verses are supposed to teach and imply . But is this done at the cost of what it actually says ?
Can Jesus really mean what he says here ?
What say you ?

Jesus Christ is not a man! He is not a person, but God's plan of redemption which must be discovered and understood. To enter this world one must wear a body of flesh and blood; yet we are told that flesh and blood cannot enter the kingdom of heaven. It takes a spiritual body to enter that kingdom and my words are spirit!

Not sure how that relates ?

Like temple and kingdom being in us. Our flesh and blood doesn't go, the who we are is sons of God who can't remember becoming man.

Well, it doesn't define what constitutes being rich. I mean, if you have enough food, clothing, and shelter to live comfortably then, in my opinion, that's rich.

This person is a ruler so I assume he had a lot of power, fame, possessions and he was in love with the lifestyle of luxury and creature comforts. He was loving those things more than God and that was where he failed.

I do not think this is a verse that condemns being rich or condemns material possessions using blanket terms. I think this serves as a warning that our priorities with loving God with all of our strength need to be first.

Jesus was just pointing out to the guy that he really didn't believe what he was saying.
It's presumable that the rich guy was looking to donate money to buy his way to heaven, or even possibly discredit Jesus for asking for him to pay for entry.
At any rate Jesus knew he was unrepentant of his sin, because he asserted that he had kept the commandments.

Is Jesus not saying he needs to follow the commandments in order to inherit eternal life ?

Yes, Jesus said that to him, and of coarse meant it. The guy should have reflected on the commandment and realized that he was a sinner and repent. But rather he claimed to have followed them fr his birth. He was a crass prideful man seeking a quick fix. The very fact that he asked was evidence he didn't believe his father's.

The body of the resurrected Lord Jesus was flesh and bone, but no blood. Blood is what has been corrupted.

He Just tells him of the thing he still lacks . So it looks like Jesus is telling him to keep the commandments AND the thing to do

I don't think Jesus is telling him to repent.

of course Jesus means what He says.
How hard is it to sell everything you have and give to the poor. Not hard, but he just didnt want to do it. All the other disciples had sold everything they had. They had given up their fishing livelihoods and gone to follow Jesus.

the rich young ruler was a brat! If he was maybe older he would have done it maybe. If he didnt have so much, maybe had nothing to lose, he may have followed Jesus in a heartbeat.

Jesus was always telling everyone to repent. That was his message. Repent; the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

18¶And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

1. The question was incorrect since no one can "inherit" eternal life.

19¶And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God.
2. Jesus was not merely a rabbi. That assumption was incorrect, since Jesus Himself is God.

20Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother.

3. This was just a test, since only five of the Ten Commandments were mentioned.

21¶And he said, All these have I kept from my youth up.

4. This young may or may not have been correct, but he also said nothing about the other five commandments.

22¶Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.

5. Since covetousness is idolatry in Scripture, Jesus exposed his idol right here.

23¶And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich.

6. He loved his wealth more than eternal life.

But . And here's the point. Is Jesus not capable of saying what he means.
