Tongues were known beyond any doubt to be genuine back in Paul's day. Now they are known to be bogus. In other words ....sign gifts were authentication miracles that HAD to be confirmed beyond dispute.
Tongues today are IMO clearly bogus. Never once have genuine tongues been duly witnessed and recorded since the passing of Paul and the Apostles. Sign gifts are over ....until the End Times where they will be utilized once again by the 144,00 and Two Witnesses.
In Corinth, someone would speak in tongues and no one would understand, so someone had to interpret, and there was a spiritual gift to enable that. That sounds like the situation that occurs in many modern churches. How was Paul's speaking in tongues 'authenticated'. The Bible doesn't say.

There are also plenty of cases where people have witnessed speaking in tongues in their own language. I have read of at least three accounts, maybe more, from Azusa Street and many sense. I have spoken with people, at least three, who have had such experiences, including two who heard speaking in tongues in English. One was an old lady in a village in China.

Where do you get the idea...from the Bible that is... that certain gifts cease and start up in the time of the book of Revelation? Why would the 144,000 be more likely to use them than any other Christian. It sounds like you are just making up doctrine or repeating someone else's made-up doctrine.

Sounds like lol. Anyways, it is possible that there are genuine tongues today.
But as with healings it is second hand info mostly. With all of the cell phones today EVERYONE would know it. Including medical doctors. You see....the infallible genuiness of the sign gifts is essential to thier purpose. They are not to be hidden. The tongues issue in Corinthians is another study.

Why do you have to hear from people's accounts? isn't He the same spirit you claim to have?
I have at one time spoken these so called tongues and can you please get it from my account - IT IS NONSENSE.

I have no problem with tongues today. I just have never seen anything compelling enough to believe that it is legit. I have attended the Pentecostal tongues congregations and it was all clearly rubbish and bogus. The Pentecostal hard liners are a mess and most are unsaved from what I can tell. Oh....and they are SEEKING AFTER A SIGN. Very dangerous indeed. What did Jesus say about this at least 4 times????

You are right, it is bogus, all of it, non is genuine. Not only tongues, modern healing, prophesy, miracles are all fake:

Matt 7:21“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ 23Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

Many here means many.

The hard core Pentecostals I knew wanted power, and I did not see much in the way of service......they seemed self-serving to a disturbing degree. Pretty scary I have to say.
John 6:28 "Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?" (in this case free food, but could be anything).

There's still more reasons to reject modern tongues + other gifts. Another reason comes from proponents themselves, they use other people's accounts as evidence of what's in them.

When the apostles received these gifts, none of them ever doubted. They knew it from within themselves that it was from God and they knew the purpose because the spirit of God would witness to them in a manner that there'd be no doubt.

Let me be direct, maybe i'll be convinced.

@presidente,
Q1. Do you speak in tongues? How often and for how many years now?
Q2. Do you know whatever is in you is genuine because God Himself witnessed to you or because of Asuza street events?
Q3. Did you at any one moment, spoke in tongues and was translated to something real to the astonishment of the crowd?

All Christians can pray in the Spirit, but not all Christians can speak in tongues.
Untrue. Praying in the Spirit is praying in tongues.
No praying in tongues = no indwelling Holy Spirit.
Tongues is the evidence of truly being baptised in the Holy Spirit.
The sign promised by Jesus.
Confusion and arguments arise because the majority of non-spirit-filled Christians deny the truth of the scriptures and claim to also
have the indwelling Holy Spirit because the founders of their denomination tell them that they have received the Holy Spirit
according to their own theology.

God himself confirms that "praying in the language that I have given you" is praying in the Spirit many, many times over through
the operation of the gift of prophecy spoken at our meetings.
There is no higher authority than God in determining the truth of doctrine.

There are multitudes of healing videos on Youtube for you to research and verify the claims.

If some of those videos are legit...no not everyone knows it or they dismissbit based on preconceived notions like atheism or cessationism. My generationbof Americans grew up watching the Scooby Doo cartoon in their formative years where everything supernatural was always a someone in a mask.

Waggles, can you show me in the Bible where it teaches that no speaking in tongues equals no indwelling Holy Spirit.

That statement is extreme for Pentecostals. Are you oneness?

The verse says they will speak in new languages. I can show you in Acts 2, 10, and 19 where they did speak in new languages. So I have Biblical support. What support do you have for your strange idea? It says new tongues, not a new heart Which Jewish scholars knew that Christians would have had a new heart? And what does that have to do with the verse we are discussing?
It says they will speak per Mark 16 with new tongues. Not new languages but new tongues. 2 Cor 5 tell us that we are new creations in Christ. We have new tongues to speak of the glories of the indwelling Christ. Jews would have known of Jehovah removing the heart of stone and replacing it with a heart of flesh.

You make a great unsupported leap of Acts 2, 10, and 19 supporting new languages. They spoke and were heard in known languages. These events were reported by Peter as signs for the Jews in Jerusalem to know the converts were the same as the ones they knew in Jerusalem. Gentiles receiving the same Holy Spirit as the Jews.

The discussion was swirling around Mark 16. You continue to build more around the mythology of Pentecostalism than on actual biblical texts.

Okay, so you are telling me you spoke nonsense. Hmmm.

It is one thing to speak in tongues. It is another for God to arrange that people be present there who actually understand the language. Apparently, the latter was not the case when tongues were spoken in church in Corinth, but there is a gift of interpretation for edifying the church.

'Languages' is another way of translated 'glossais'. It is the very exact same word, even the same form of the word, found in Acts 2:4 where the disciples spoke in tongues.

2 Cor 5 tell us that we are new creations in Christ. We have new tongues to speak of the glories of the indwelling Christ. Jews would have known of Jehovah removing the heart of stone and replacing it with a heart of flesh.
Mark 16:17 does not say a heart of stone or a heart of flesh. It says new tongues.

You make a great unsupported leap of Acts 2, 10, and 19 supporting new languages.
The exact same word is used. Mark 16:17 says they will speak with new tongues/languages. Acts 2:4 says they spake with other tongues/languages as the Spirit gave them utterances. In Acts 10, it happened among the Gentiles also.

The discussion was swirling around Mark 16. You continue to build more around the mythology of Pentecostalism than on actual biblical texts.
I think this is just a case of your not being able to see the forest or the trees.

There is a video of a guy on YouTube who got prayed for who could see through a socket without an eye. Maybe whoever prayed for him could have prayed for the eye, not just vision.

Assuming that you speak in tongues daily for years now,
Q. Did you at any one moment, speak in tongues and was translated to something real to the astonishment of the crowd?

I have never spoken a tongue out in the assembly to be interpreted but I have witnessed this probably hundrds of times. I do not know how adtonished the crowd was since most people are familiar with gifts of the Spirit.

I would imagine unbelievers and some Christians who are unfamiliar with prophecy might be astonished when someone prophesies about things the one prophesying couldn't naturally know.

My wife has prophesied over people like that quite a lot. But she seemed astonished when she was thinking about starting a catering business when I was a poor grad student. She went to a meeting of about 10 people and someone got a word encouraging someone there about starting a catering business. My wife and I did catering after that which kept us afloat financially. My point is me wife seemed 'astonished' being on the recieving end after being on the giving end a lot.

I showed up late at a retreat and few minutes inyo it end up praying for a giy I'd shaken ands with and met once. I prayed about his car problems, his ministry in India, ministry in th US. He seemed astonished later andvasked hus wife if she gad told my wife about the bad wheel on his car and she gad not.

Sometimes believers are astonished. It is also comforting to see God at work in your life. It is like when you pray an amazingly detailed prayer and the Lord answers it. Isn't that encouraging?

Experience is not the highest authority in determining un-seen spiritual truth . If it was when Satan brought into the mind of Jesus showing him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them. Jesus should of bowed down to that experience but rather he said three times, as it is written. Going beyond as it is written simply opens the door way to the occult world.

If you go to the foundation of tongues which is God mocking the Jews who mocked him by refusing to hear prophecy. Seeing they were hanging on to a oral tradition of men which made the word of God without effect .Then you might understand why God spoke the gospel by interpreting it directly to each one of that 3000 heard that day in their own tongue.

Eliminating the Holy Spirit as the interpreter I would think speaks of another gospel other that as it is written.

God brining new prophecy in other languages other than Hebrew alone fulfilled the promise of the law found in Isaiah 28 . Men who have turned making a noise into as sign that confirm, only confirm they refuse to hear prophecy

God is no longer brining any new prophecy after any manner to include tongues.

We walk by faith not after signs as lying wonders gospel . Look to the foundation of the law in Isaiah 28 it helps to point who the sign representing those who will not hear prophecy. The sign seekers have turned that upside down and made the sign into something that confirm they hear prophecy .The opposite is true

It is according to the law (Isiah 28) and prophecy or fulfillment (1 Corinthians 14:21-22) called the law and testimony ( Both as one witness)

To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. Isaiah 8:20

The foundation of tongues below

For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet "they would not hear". But the word of the Lord was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken. Wherefore hear the word of the Lord, "ye scornful men", that rule this people which is in Jerusalem. Isaiah 28: 12-14

The testimony or prophecy below or we could say law and the prophets

In the law (Isaiah 28: 12-14) it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not "to them" that believe, but "to them" that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe. 1 Corinthians 14 :21 -22

"God mocking the Jews "

God judging unbelieving Israel, certainly not mocking. And this of course was prophesied.
And tongues were a gift to the Church BTW.

Yes its signs that follows. Never leads.

The apostate Jew that required a sign before they would commit faith stumbled over the cross making Jesus into a circus seal.

Do us a trick perform a miracle and then we will believe.

John 6:30 They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work?

John 4:48 Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.

Sign and wonders two different things. Signs what the eyes see, wonders that which by we marvel or are amazed . Jesus said marvel not but rather walk by faith mixing it the unseen in what we do hear or see.

Its an evil generation(natural converted man) that seeks after a sign before they will commit faith.

Wonders being a source of the unseen faith a distinction must be made.

As born again creature they spoke in a new tongues called " prophecy" the words God put on their lips. This is when God was still adding to His word
