I follow the biblical imperatives for the use of the gift

I am neither Charismatic and certainly not Pentecostal

I grew up in a great church but they were against tongues even though people in the church kept receiving that gift for some strange reason (God breaking into their complacency)

I would not hesitate to go to the same type of church if I could find one where I now live....tongues are not necessary for salvation but they are real and the misuse of same does not negate the fact that God has not stopped giving his spiritual gifts to people

you do not understand the biblical instructions, say the opposite of what Paul wrote and conclude no more tongues
Again more personal opinion and let me guess...only tongue talkers understand the word.....yeah right!

it is the term supernatural the problem in context to knowledge? Ok then how about Godly wisdom is that supernatural? You are enticing scripture
Wisdom is the proper application of knowledge.....we gain biblical knowledge from the word of God and when we apply the word we are exercising Godly wisdom...

Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. We have the mind of Christ and all we need in the written word.

we sure do

while the things of the Spirit are not of the mind

we are to renew our minds ACCORDING to the word of God and not according the the reasoning of mankind

for example, what human would consider having their son die on a cross...a horrible death...to secure the salvation of all who would call on his name?

not gonna happen. but God choose this as His plan of redemption and plenty of people scoff at that and call Christianity a 'bloody or bloodthirsty' religion

does God answer prayer or not? what do you mean by 'if God knew?'

Jesus gave the example of the woman badering the judge as a metaphor for praying

you are out of line here in your desire to prove yourself right. God knows ALL things yet we are clearly and repeatedly told to pray
Nothing of value and take your own advice in the last line...................and maybe read my next post on prayer....I never said we are not to pray!

Nothing but opinion in the above bias diatribe!
can you tell the truth of what actually went down?

convenient memory loss?

the op posted about praying in tongues..you joined in and started saying derogatory things about speaking in tongues...let alone praying in tongues...calling it mumbo jumbo etc

your word is not scripture and neither are your opinions

it seems you cannot even keep straight what actually occurred and you try to turn the tables

this was a positive thread. you and others have turned it into the usual arguing/debating diatribe that you are so good at

follow your own advice yeah right...

no one ever said only those who speak and or pray/sing i tongues are the only ones who understand the word

you just can't stand the fact people have a positive witness for praying in tongues

ask God to forgive your stubborn heart and your pride and maybe you can have the same witness

sadly, you just keep repeating yourself with nothing of value to add and to think this was a good thread with a positive lean until you and several others did what you usually do...scoff at what the Bible says is a gift from God

you have your own understanding and it is not biblical

what you said about prayer was this: And if GOD knew, why would he need you when he can drop a bible in her lap at any moment

you were mocking someone who had prayed in tongues

you were being sarcastic

you have quite the attitude. no need to be sarcastic and mocking. enough you seem to despise what others value

Get your facts straight.........I made a generalized post about which church had an issue with these things which was factual and then railed on the mumbo jumbo passed off as tongues today........and YOU and a few others went off on me, and I was not even addressing any of you.....please get your facts straight and be honest for once in your life

you are in denial

anyone can read what you wrote

that big 'I am innocent' paintbrush you like to pull out whenever anyone calls you on the way you post, is really getting old

no one went off on you dude. you think you should have the last word and get upset when you don't

you make personal comments like 'be honest for once in your life' or 'get a life'

those are simply ad hominum attacks and the lazy person's way of turning a debate into an argument

Sure it is new to the one that has not heard it....Key word HEARD IT <---How shall they hear except one be sent......it is the preaching of the word of GOD that imparts knowledge.......the bible is complete, there is no need of a new revelation and or some super natural imparted knowledge.....the bible is clear....the HOLY Spirit is what leads, guides in the truth......

One preaches and or one reads the word and the Holy Spirit gives understanding........and like it states above....HOW shall they hear UNLESS one be SENT........??

it's still true

grow up and stop the ad hominum attacks which you know you do and hope to get an arguement going when you do so

try some maturity.

Pretty sad.....most people on here that disagree at least have some honesty....you on the other hand are one that lacks the ability to just be honest and admit.....whatever! And for the record...who is upset.......Honesty will set you free....but hey........it is obvious that you cannot admit what I was and will continue to stand against.....the mumbo jumbo passed off as tongues in most churches that claim it.....

Tell you what......go to a Korean assembly where no one speaks English and stand up and speak fluent Korean and witness to them in a manner that brings glory to God......or better yet....invite a few of them into your assembly......stand up and speak fluent Korean and make sure another member can translate for the English speaking members.........

I am against the MUMBO JUMBO that is passed off as tongues....the word MEANS LANGUAGES and that being LANGUAGES that MEN can speak........why is it so hard for this truth to be embraced?????

Not only that but tongues God prophesying the word of God, prophecy in many languages ,is a two way gift ...not self edifying as in self righteousness.

Speaking fluently in Korean when only knowing English is one aspect but the other would spkeak fluid English only knowing Korean so that they could understand each other. It takes two people understanding each other to complete a conversation .As God moves one giving His interpretation he moves the other as a mutual gift. Its how the gospel was spread to other nations.

If then I don’t know the meaning of the sound, I would be to him who speaks a foreigner, and he who speaks would be a foreigner to me. 1 Corinthains 14

that is a strawman you listen to one sermon preached and you will get 10 different applications.

an interpretation is not a translation. What is it to be edified? What is it to be comforted? Has the comforting only come to a person in one application? Does edification only happen to a person in one application?

You use yet again human reasoning to explain spitual things. You are trying to nail jello to a wall. Is inspiration from the Holy Spirit applied to the believer one way? You limit God and take away HIS ability to be one's personal Savior and Lord. You do this and then try to make it fit what you know, and close the door on all others.

No, I don’t believe it is. There are many examples of the same glossic string being played to several different people – no two interpretations were ever similar enough to each other to suggest a commonality with only one original utterance.

Yes, you’re correct; an interpretation is not a translation; however, even with interpretation of one language to another, despite minor differences, the meaning/interpretation is essentially one in the same. Enough to know each came from the same source. This doesn’t happen with ‘tongues’.

“The big brown dog is slow” can never be “the small white cat is quick” which is typically what you get with respect to interpretations for the same glossic string. It’s spiritual improv. It’s based on what one is feeling is being communicated at the moment.

Again, if those ten different people all offered a very similar interpretation, close enough to demonstrate that they clearly all came from one original source, I’d be inclined to agree with what you’re saying; but that’s just not the reality of the situation.

You’re twisting the definition of the concept of ‘interpretation’ to fit the idea of modern tongues and interpretation. You can’ t have multiple, completely unrelated, interpretations for the same utterance – if that were the case, there wouldn’t ever be need of the original utterance. Neither language nor communication in general works that way. As people are keen to quote to me “God is not the author of confusion”.

your post 554

The tragic truth......the only church in the N.T. that had an issue with the gifts and like today BOASTED of the ability to speak tongues, was the spiritually immature Corinthian assembly that had some 15 errors.........and it took over three chapters to correct their error.........many of the same errors are found within churches today that make a big deal of speaking in tongues and I am not saying this based upon bias and or a lack of info as I have many family and friends that attend these types of churches. Paul was clear and so is the verbiage found in the Corinthian letter.....if ONE is going to covet a GIFT Paul said to covet the BEST gift and tongues was not it........

I fully expect those that push tongues to argue against the truth..........

Fail, cease and vanish away are clear, so is the word perfect as applied to a 1st Century Greek speaking believer.

Super natural knowledge is no longer needed due to the completed bible
Prophecy is no longer needed due to the completed bible and the last BOOK of Prophecy
And tongues has devolved into some mumbo jumbo that does nothing for the hearer......

When one can stand and speak fluent Mandarin with zero training in an open assembly with another to translate for the sake of a Chinese visitor that does not speak ENGLISH then the true meaning of tongues as applied in the 1st Century will be evident.

Why is it so hard for the truth to be accepted.

another ad hominum attack

you deliver words that are derogatory concerning a gift God gives and then get upset when people disagree with you

it's not your version of the truth that is truth. it's God's word that is truth

I called you on the way you mock tongues and since then, you have called me a liar

you dish it out but you cannot take it

again, you post ad hominum attacks...personal attacks...such as calling me a liar...no scripture...just your own desire to argue and make problems here for people who do not agree with you.

it's really childish

the truth is, that you only partially quote what Paul says regarding tongues. Paul said do not forbid speaking in tongues and he was correcting a church that obviously needed it, BUT in your desire to quash tongues, you change what Paul says

you should stop calling others untruthful when you cannot even be true to what scripture says and only partially quote Paul to make it seem you make your case from him...but in fact, Paul said the following:

13 For this reason the one who speaks in a tongue should pray that they may interpret what they say.

14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.

15 So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my understanding; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my understanding.

16 Otherwise when you are praising God in the Spirit, how can someone else, who is now put in the position of an inquirer, say “Amen” to your thanksgiving, since they do not know what you are saying?

17 You are giving thanks well enough, but no one else is edified.

18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. I Corinthians 1

These are three separate examples of transcribed "tongues" from three different speakers (transcribed using a simple IPA).
Word boundaries and sentences are completely arbitrary and are based on the stops and pauses of the speakers.

If there is is language and meaning with any of the above, I'd sure like to know where it is.
