Your Word for Today

“he rose from supper, and laid aside His garments; and took a towel, and girded Himself. After that He poured water into a basin, and began to wash the Disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel, wherewith He was girded (Jn. 13:4-5).

The action presented here, Jesus washing His Disciples’ feet, plays out to several particulars.

First of all, and concerning this, Williams says, “Nothing is more amazing than the fact of God assuming Manhood in order to serve man. Man could only be saved through the selfhumiliation of Christ — ‘if I wash you not,’ etc. — such is sin; its cleansing demanded such a humiliation!”

Second, the feet only were washed.

Under the Mosaic Law, when the Priests went into the Holy Place, they had to wash both their hands and their feet at the Brazen Laver. To not do so could bring death.

So why didn’t Jesus also wash the hands of His Disciples, along with their feet?

Under the Law, the entire episode presented a constant “doing,” hence, the necessity of the hands also being washed.

Under Christ, the “doing” has already been “done,” hence, the necessity of washing the feet only. The washing of the feet addressed our “walk” before the Lord. Despite the fact that we are Sanctified in Christ, which means to constantly be “made clean,” nevertheless, the very fact of living in this evil world pollutes, sullies, and stains, necessitating the need for constant washing.

What Christ did was only a symbolism, and not meant to be repeated, because ceremonies cannot cleanse. The Believer is constantly cleansed by placing his Faith exclusively in Christ and the Cross, thereby adhering strictly to the Word of God.

Last of all, what Jesus did presents the pattern for all Believers. The pattern is:

1. “He laid aside His garments”: This speaks of His Incarnation, when He laid aside the expression of His Deity, while not losing the possession of His Deity.

2. “And took a towel”: This represented the Service He would perform for mankind. The Believer is to never be a lord over others, but rather a servant to others, here exampled by Christ.

3. “And girded Himself”: When He laid aside His garments of Deity, He then “girded Himself” with the mantle of humanity, i.e., the Incarnation.

4. “After that He poured water into a basin”: This represents the Holy Spirit working through the Master, carrying out the work of obedience regarding the Father’s Will.

The example for us is obvious! (Jn. 13:13-17).”

Bread Crumbs “Steps in the Desert” July 27

There will be times in our Christian life where the Lord takes us through desert experiences that are not enjoyable. As human beings it is natural for us to depend upon ourselves. It is unnatural for us to depend upon God and His Word. God may see the need to humble us to help us grasp the power and life giving potential of His precious Word. He may have to allow a circumstance to hinder our wrong direction and send us scampering in desperation towards the pages of the Bible, so long neglected. He may bring us to hunger, but only that we might see the need to search out “manna from heaven.” He longs for us to realize that man is not meant to live by bread alone. The Lord desires for us to develop a daily dependence upon His Words. All direction for life and living flows from them. And, if need be, God will take us through a desert to teach us reliance upon His wonderful words of life. When you began to search out His Word on a daily basis, your desert experience will begin to blossom and bloom with the security of riches and wisdom contained in the precious seed of God’s Word!

Deuteronomy 8:3 - And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.

The Miracle of God’s Word

Galatians 3:16
Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.

The Seed of Abraham is Christ which was promised by God even to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden when the Lord found them in sin (Genesis 3:15). This was God’s answer from before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4, 1 Peter 1:20, Revelation 13:8) for sin and remains the only answer today for sin. Not just the pardon for sin, but also for daily power from the Sin Nature. There has never been one sin or any type of bondage which man has delivered himself from and to think he can is the epitome of pride. Jesus paid it all.

The promise of Eternal Life is only found in Jesus Christ, through faith in what He did for all men at the cross (Hebrews 2:9). This seed Paul is speaking about is Jesus Christ, the Seed of the woman who would crush the devil's head at Calvary and be bruised for our sins and iniquities. We are in Christ through faith in His work of atonement on the cross, thus making us as well Abraham’s Seed in Christ (v. 29) and heirs according to that promise made to Abraham! Again, don’t look away from why this letter was written. When we move away from the proper context, we ourselves begin to move away from the focus the Lord is attempting to bring back to the Saints in Galatia. Don’t look away from the cross of Christ, although many will try to tell you that everything doesn’t pertain to Christ and His work there, IT DOES!

Bread Crumbs “My Greatest Treasure” July 28

The greatest treasure of my life is the relationship that I have with my Heavenly Father. By faith I have accepted Christ as my Savior and He, in turn, has introduced me to God the Father. I have found Him to be kind, all knowing, merciful, all-powerful, glorious and regal. Yet He remains both humble and unassuming. He daily spreads a table before me laden with good things that brings life and strength to my soul. He guides me through the obstacle course of life and helps me to run this race with power and strength that far surpasses my natural ability. In Him I have found a complete companion, a constant comforter, and a careful confidant. My heavenly Father sustains my soul, fills my heart with gladness, brings perfect peace to my mind, and coddles me like a little child when I feel lonely or lost. At times He chastises, rebukes, or reproves my choices, my actions, and my attitudes. But this too is done out of His immeasurable love for me and His ongoing aggressive desire for my well-being. My Father in heaven truly is my greatest treasure, my prize possession, and my one true reason for living.

Matthew 13:45-46 - Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: (46) Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

The Miracle of God’s Word

Galatians 3:17
And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.

This is so important to know. This Eternal Covenant was confirmed of God in Christ four hundred and thirty years before the Law was given to Moses. The Law did not disannul the promise that would come through the Covenant. Certain denominations have thrown out the Old Covenant writings because they say we are no longer under Law, but the Old Covenant writings speak of Christ, who is the New Covenant. Jesus Christ says the Scriptures are about Him (Psalm 40:7, Luke 24:44-46, John 5:39, Hebrews 10:7), that He is The Life (John 14:6), and THAT Life is only found in the blood (Leviticus 17:11) upon the altar/cross for the atonement for our souls.

Don’t ever let anyone to lead you away from the promise that is found EXCLUSIVELY through faith in Christ and His sacrificial work on Calvary’s Cross back under the Law that once held you cursed and dead in your sins. The Law separates us from the Lord because we cannot keep it, but faith in Christ and His work at the Cross reconciles us to God, and KEEPS us (1 Peter 1:5) in fellowship with the Lord daily (1 John 1:7). He kept the Law fully and died for us so that through our faith in Him the Righteousness of the Law might be fulfilled in us who walk after the Spirit (Faith in the cross alone), and not after the flesh (Trusting in anything we do). Praise the Lamb of God!!

Walking In The Spirit

In the church today many have reduced walking in the Spirit mostly to our activity, meaning that walking in the Spirit is simply the doing of spiritual things. While walking in the Spirit will cause us to do spiritual things, it alone is not the doing of anything but actually it has all to do with our faith. It is my belief that Paul went into great detail on this all important subject in the 5th chapter of Galatians unlike any of his epistles. In Galatians and with the Help of the Lord prayerfully we will shed some light on this subject.

The church of Galatia was founded by the Apostle Paul, hence, they were taught thoroughly the message of redemption through faith alone in the cross of Christ. This church allowed false teachers to come in and lead them away from the teachings of Message of grace and Faith and almost destroyed them because they were reverting back to a system of legalism! This false teaching was leading them to salvation by works, or that in order to live victorious over sin they would need to be governed by laws. They had begun to see moral failure in the church, the legalism and law was causing them to bite and devour one another, all due to the fact that they had left simple faith in the cross and began to trust in other things other than what God provided through Christ.

In chapter 5 Paul gives the solution to this biting and devouring, the solution to the moral failure, he tells them to walk in the Spirit and they would not fulfill the lusts of the flesh. The word walk is important, it means to conduct ones self or ordering ones manner of life or behavior. So, walk were, in the Spirit Paul says, and in order to do this we must understand where the Holy Spirit is functioning or working. Paul says in Romans 8:2 for the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the Law of sin and death. This verse tells us that the Holy Spirit works in Christ, meaning he will not operate or function outside of the legal confines of what Christ did at Calvary. This tells us as believers that it is our faith in the cross that gives the Holy Spirit the latitude to work in our lives and that the Holy Spirit alone can accomplish what needs to be accomplished in our hearts and lives. So, to walk in the Spirit means to place faith in the finished work of Christ, and depend upon the Holy Spirit to help us to live this Christian life as we ought to.

Galatians 5:16
This I say then, walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

Bread Crumbs “Reviving Relationship With Jesus” July 29

There is a special unique beauty that resides within the framework of circumstance of falling in love. The excitement that exists, the wonder, the sharing, the learning about one another. All of these earmark the spectacle of giving your heart away. We wonder, at the beginning, if our love will be returned. We are a little nervous about putting ourselves in the position where we might be disappointed or hurt. Sadly, there is always the chance that the cutting edge of this sensational relationship could begin to grow dull. What was once new, fresh, and exciting falls prey to the doldrums of daily activity and schedule. We may even begin to be unappreciative of all that this other person brings into our lives. The worse case scenario would be that a lack of interest grows until little or no attention is paid to the one who has always paid attention to us. Have you forgotten the excitement of that “just saved” feeling? Has relationship with Jesus succumbed to a routine of religious activity? If that is the case then let me suggest that it is never too late for a revival of your “first love” for Jesus. Perhaps its past time for a second honeymoon?

Psalm 63:3 - Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee.

The Miracle of God’s Word

Galatians 3:18
For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise.

WOW!! The Scriptures, when referring to the Law, is what man was to be shown so that he could realize that in no way could he live up to it because of his sinful flesh (Romans 8:3), but rather this realization would cause him to cry out to God through faith in the sacrificial system which He had provided. Still today many continue to teach and preach that we must DO THIS or DO THAT to be saved, or delivered from sin, but Jesus paid it all, and if we have to do one single work to receive it, it is no more by promise. Now again, don’t forget that this letter was written to “an already saved and filled with the Spirit people of God, so the focus is “what allows the Holy Spirit to CONTINUE to work in our lives.”

Yes, you are right, the Holy Spirit will never leave nor forsake us, but what we haven’t been taught by ministers is that we can remove ourselves from Him (Chapter 1:6, 5:1-4). When you fall prey to the “Unconditional Eternal Security”, “Once Saved Always Saved” heresy, it means you do not understand many Scriptures and will not be able to until you forsake that lie. Our Eternal Security has always been conditional, NOT “unconditional.” We are justified by faith (Romans 5:1), and we are kept by faith (1 Peter 1:5). The Holy Spirit is God and ALL of God’s works are done in Truth (Psalm 33:4, Romans 8:2). This is the only avenue of initial Salvation, and daily sanctification. God gave the promise to Abraham by promise, and it has never been received by ANYONE outside of faith in that fulfilled promise in Christ Jesus! Always remember that there are no works outside of Christ, but All the Works of God are In Christ (Ephesians 2:10), therefore no one has ever worked their way into Christ, but all who have received the promise have trusted in His work at the Cross! Don’t quit today!

Bread Crumbs “Loving Your Neighbor” July 30

The Bible tells us that we are to love our neighbor as much as we love ourselves. If one would truly consider the exorbitant amount of time we spend thinking about ourselves and our everyday situations, we would truly appreciate the impact of this command. Ever since man fell in the garden of Eden we have been inappropriately focused upon ourselves. Everything is about “me.” What I want! What I feel! What I expect! I pray about my needs. I take steps to provide my desires. I travel in the direction that I’m inclined to go. When we pursue headlong into a life of self absorption the ability to notice the needs of others is greatly hindered. I am free to love Christ, to love people, and to love life. But the liberty that I have in Christ is not just a liberty in which I serve myself. This freedom that I enjoy should always include thoughts regarding the needs and desires of those around us.
Selfishness will almost always precede an abuse of this Christian liberty, causing our self-centered actions to poorly reflect upon the Christ we have chosen to serve. Let us serve others with the same zeal and intensity with which we pursue the things that pertain to us.

Matthew 22:39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

The Miracle of God’s Word

Galatians 3:19
Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.

Paul is asking the Galatians as to why they have allowed themselves to be drawn to a place where they are serving the Law, as it was added because of their sins until Jesus would come. Christ is the Seed which was promised all the way back from the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:15). Moses was the man God used to mediate the Law to men, but the Law was only intended to point us to the Seed, The Savior who was coming (v. 23-24) to justify those who would believe upon Him and His work of Redemption.

Always remember that Law is anything we are attempting to do for righteousness, for Christ did THAT WORK (Isaiah 32:17) alone, by Himself (Hebrews 1:3), and ours is ONLY to be found walking in what God finished in His Son at the cross! Law says obey me, then Law says you can’t therefore you are condemned. Grace says Jesus kept the Law and Jesus died for you. Trust in Him because you still can’t keep the Law. Only by His Spirit can the Righteousness of the Law be fulfilled in us (Romans 8:4), and only then if we WALK after the Spirit, which is faith in the cross of Christ alone, and not after the flesh. Oh what good news this is, and this Truth can break every chain of sin and bondage in your life. Today is THE DAY of your salvation! Only trust in Jesus and His work at Calvary!

Bread Crumbs “Trust in the Cross” July 31

Too often, the actions of sin are concentrated on as opposed to dealing with the genuine source of sin. If we are to solve the dilemma of sin, one must go beyond just the realization of its presence and move to the biblical route that deals with its source. The real question that begs to be asked is, ”how does one eliminate the temptation to sin, thus eliminating its manifestation?” Faith in Christ and His finished work on Calvary can diffuse the spark of sin within the heart of man that produces the blazing fire of temptation in the soul. The true solution to the sin problem lies in the perfecting and maturing of one’s faith. Our faith must be ever growing and enlarging itself; constantly removing and eliminating trust in the flesh, trust in self, and dependence upon what we can do. As we learn to rely and lean wholeheartedly upon the provision of God in Christ, the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit tears consistently away at the foundation of sin that lies within the fabric of every human heart. Thereby removing the desire to do wrong and making the lure of sin of little effect upon the human being. The answer to eliminating deeds of sin? Trust in the Cross!

Psalm 2:12 - Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

The Miracle of God’s Word

Galatians 3:20
Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one.

A mediator, or what we might call a go between of an agreement or rather here referring to a covenant, does not mediate only for one of those involved in the covenant but more than one. To mediate in an agreement or covenant means there is more than one involved typically, but God cut this wonderful New Covenant that we have in the blood of Jesus (Luke 22:20, 1 Corinthians 11:25) with Himself (Hebrews 6:13-18). What God did in Christ at the Cross can never be done away with, although it can be despised and rejected by man (Hebrews 10:29). This Covenant that took place at the Cross of Jesus Christ is an eternal covenant based on God’s everlasting love for His Creation.

Again, never forget why this letter was written. Never leave the context or you will find yourself only in the pretext, and in the same predicament the Galatians were in. They were choosing to leave simple faith exclusively in the work of Christ at the cross for the things they would do that would make them look like they were now being perfected through what they were doing (Flesh v. 3). This will never happen, as there is no work of perfection, nor are there perfect works through what we do (Revelation 3:2), but only by the Spirit, and God only works in the Truth (Psalm 33:4, Romans 8:2). Believe the Word of God over what you feel, or what someone is telling you!

Bread Crumbs “Just Passing Through” August 1

The trial that you now find yourself embroiled in will not define you. It may seem to be crushing you, but the weight that threatens you is not intended to overwhelm or destroy. In fact, it is in the mind and heart of God that the trials you encounter will work for your benefit. This present trial can and will teach you how to receive supernatural strength through faith in Christ. The event you now face will not be able to totally eliminate you from the land of the living. Instead, it will teach you how to endure that which is unbearable, carry that which is too heavy, and smile in the face of daunting adversity. As long as you keep your eyes on the One who has saved you, on the One who has chosen you, on the One who has promised to never leave you nor forsake you, the end of your trial is potentially only moments away. He has promised to walk with us through every fire, carry us across the overflowing waters, and guide us over every lofty mountain. And always remember this truth; the trial you are facing today did not come to remain a constant. It came to pass!

Isaiah 43:2 - When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.
