Looking for Daniel

Daniel 1
But the principal court official says to Daniel: “I am afraid of my lord the king, who has assigned your food and drink. What if I should see you looking worse in appearance than the other youths of your age? You would make me guilty before the king”.

- If God plays his part, it also means we have to play ours!

- And we need to develop practical knowledge to be able to adapt in different situations!

- The Bible tells us about so many situations faithful servants of God had to cope with!

- Once again it shows that we need to study the Bible regularly and not from time to time!

Looking for Daniel

Daniel 1
In every matter requiring wisdom and understanding that the king asks them about, he finds them ten times better than all the magic-practicing priests and the conjurers in his entire realm. And Daniel remains there until the first year of King Cyrus.

- But they are not only better!

- They are ten times better!

- So it goes far beyond the normal system!

- Youngsters can learn a lot during this period of their lives!

- And teaching them about God is essential!

- But a God with whom they can develop a personal relationship!

- It is quite different from what modern society does in general!

- It also a reason why we are where we are!

Looking for Daniel

Daniel 2
He asks them to pray for mercy from the God of heaven concerning this secret, so that Daniel and his companions won’t be destroyed along with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

- That’s definitely interesting!

- Daniel is an able man!

- He is probably the best!

- He knows he has a good relationship with God!

- But he doesn’t prevent from asking the help of his companions by praying God!

- It is definitely exceptional!

- We can understand why he is called “precious man”!

Looking for Daniel

Daniel 2

- So Daniel tells about the king’s dream and then its interpretation:

This is the dream, and we will now tell the king its interpretation. You, O king-the king of kings to whom the god of heaven has given the kingdom, the might, the strength, and the glory, and into whose hand he has given men wherever they may dwell, as well as the beasts of the field and the birds of the heavens, and whom he has made ruler over all of them – you yourself are the head of gold.

- Before telling the interpretation to the king, Daniel tells him that God gave him all what he has!

- And he enumerates all the things he has!

- We can say it is also a warning to the king!

- Because if God gave him all what he has, he can also take it!

- And he will take him everything!

- The king, because of his power, thinks nobody can take him what he has!

- The Israelites did the same!

- They did not listen to God!

- And he took everything he had given him!

- Are we going to do the same?

- Or will we listen to him?

Looking for Daniel

Daniel 6
Darius appoints 120 satraps over the whole kingdom and among them three officials, one of whom is Daniel. And Daniel is distinguishing himself over the other high officials and the satraps, for there is an extraordinary spirit in him and the king intends to elevate him over the entire kingdom.

- Thus Kings change but Daniel stays and keeps his position!

- God keeps blessing him!

- Daniel is definitely a special one or as we will see later “a precious man”!

- There is no one like him because god is with him!

- And also because he is humble, he doesn’t look for honors!

- Humility is one of the best quality for God, if not the best one!

Looking for Daniel

Daniel 10
Daniel is given a revelation about a great conflict. He has been mourning for three full weeks. When he sees the vision, the men with him don’t see it but a great trembling seizes them and they run away and hide. And because of what he sees, there is no power left in him and his dignified appearance leaves him and he loses all strength. Once again he is called PRECIOUS MAN. Daniel is trembling. His prayer has been heard because of his attitude and his humility. So Daniel is told about the final part of the days. But Daniel says he has no strength and no breath is left in him.

- Through all the Bible men have been warned!

- And here it is the same story!

- And when Daniel has a new vision, it is so powerful that he can’t stand it!

- Do you have an idea of what is going to happen when Jesus comes back as a warrior to cleanse the earth under the orders of his father?

- Think about the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans!

- But it will be nothing compared to what will happen to the world!

- But humanity keeps acting as if everything was normal!

- Of course, they are a bit afraid because the situation is degrading!

- Even when we know, it will be a surprise!

- Because at the present time we see things we could have never imagined at all!

- And we will see a lot more!

- But it will be nothing compared to the coming of Jesus as a king and warrior!

God and Daniel / Daniel and God

Daniel 1:

- When the king speaks with them, no one in the entire group is found to be like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah; and they continue to serve before the king.

- Imagine the quantity of people!

- They are many!

- And among so many people only four get out of the mass!

- Can you visualize the scene?

- It is unbelievable!

- Four against a multitude!

- they definitely have God’s spirit!

- And among the four, Daniel gets out of them!

- So first Daniel, second his three companions and the rest!

God and Daniel / Daniel and God

Daniel 2:
The king then elevated Daniel and gave him many fine gifts, and he made him the ruler over all the province of Babylon and the chief prefect over all the wise men of Babylon. And at Daniel’s request, the king appointed Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego over the administration of the province of Babylon, but Daniel served in the king’s court.

- God blesses Daniel who becomes each time more important !

- But whatever happens, Daniel never forgets his companions !

- A cement necessary for a top relationship to God is humility, humility and humility !-

- No humility, no strong relationship to God !

- There is no better quality !

- A rare one in this world !

God and Daniel / Daniel and God

Daniel 10:

- As usual before a special event, here a vision, Daniel prepares himself!

- He has been mourning for three full weeks!

- No rich food, no meat or wine, no oil on himself!

- Then he gets the vision!

- he is with other men but he is the only one to see the vision!

- The others have a great trembling and run away and hide!

- He has no power left in him!

- His dignified appearance leaves him!

- He loses all his strength!

- It is not something usual but extraordinary!

- And the man in the vision speaks to him!

- And once again he is called very precious man!

- And he keeps trembling!

A very precious man and a top official

Daniel 1:
So the guardian takes away their delicacies and their wine and give them vegetables. And the true God gives these four youths knowledge and insight into every kind of writing and wisdom; and Daniel is given understanding in all sorts of visions and dreams.

- Once again, Daniel shows how Faithful he is !

- As a consequence, he receives knowledge and insight and wisdom and understanding !

- We can see it is a process !

- Qualities are to be developed !

- It must grow and grow !

- And there is no limit !

- God’s creation keeps growing !

- The universe keeps growing !

- The brain keeps growing if you don’t listen to human society !

- Getting older is a fake !

- We shouldn’t get older !

- There is no limit to the capacities of the brain !

- There is if we stop using it !

- There is no limit to the capacity of creating and developping ideas !

- So if we want to follow God’s example, we need to keep using our brains and being creative !

A very precious man and a top official

Daniel 6:

These men then say: “We will find in this Daniel no grounds for accusation at all, unless we find it against him in the law of his God.”
So these high officials and satraps go in as a group to the king, and they say to him: “O King Darius, may you live on forever. All the royal officials, prefects, satraps, high royal officers, and governors have consulted together to establish a royal decree and to enforce a ban, that for 30 days whoever makes a petition to any god or man except to you, O king, should be thrown into the lions’ pit. Now, O king, may you establish the decree and sign it, so that it cannot be changed, according to the law of the Medes and the Persians, which cannot be annulled.”
So King Darius signs the decree and the ban. But as soon as Daniel knows that the decree has been signed, he goes to his house, which has the windows of his roof chamber open toward Jerusalem. And three times a day he gets down on his knees and prays and offers praise before his God, as he has regularly done prior to this. At that time those men burst in and find Daniel petitioning and pleading for favor before his God.

- Daniel doesn’t care about people!

- But he cares about God!

- There is nothing more important than serving him!

- And the people who trick him know it!

- As soon as he hears about the decree, he praises God!

- FAITHFUL!

- Such an incredible example of the Bible!

Where does it come from?
How does it grow?

Daniel 5

Then all the wise men of the king come in, but they are not able to read the writing or to make known the interpretation to the king. So King Belshazzar is very frightened and his face turns pale; and his nobles are perplexed.
Because of the words of the king and his nobles, the queen entered the banqueting hall. The queen says: “O king, may you live on forever. Do not let your thoughts terrify you, nor let your face turn pale. There is a man in your kingdom who has the spirit of holy gods. In the days of your father, enlightenment and insight and wisdom like the wisdom of gods were found in him. King Nebuchadnezzar your father appointed him as chief of the magic-practicing priests, conjurers, Chaldeans, and astrologers; your father did this, O king. For Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar, had an extraordinary spirit and knowledge and insight to interpret dreams, to explain riddles, and to solve knotty problems. Now let Daniel be summoned, and he will tell you the interpretation.” So Daniel is brought in before the king. The king asks Daniel: “Are you Daniel of the exiles of Judah, whom my father the king brought out of Judah? I have heard concerning you that the spirit of gods is in you and that enlightenment and insight and extraordinary wisdom have been found in you. Now the wise men and the conjurers were brought in before me to read this writing and to make its interpretation known to me, but they are not able to tell the interpretation of the message. But I have heard concerning you that you are able to provide interpretations and to solve knotty problems. Now if you are able to read the writing and to make its interpretation known to me, you will be clothed with purple, a gold necklace will be placed around your neck, and you will rule as the third one in the kingdom.” Daniel then replied to the king: “You may keep your gifts and give your presents to others. However, I will read the writing to the king and make known its interpretation to him.

But you, his son Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, although you knew all of this. Instead, you exalted yourself against the Lord of the heavens, and you had them bring you the vessels of his house. Then you and your nobles, your concubines and your secondary wives drank wine from them and praised gods of silver and gold, of copper, iron, wood, and stone, gods that see nothing and hear nothing and know nothing. But you have not glorified the God in whose hand is your breath and all your ways. So the hand was sent from him, and this writing was inscribed. And this is the writing that was inscribed: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, and PARSIN.
This is the interpretation of the words: MENE, God has numbered the days of your kingdom and brought it to an end. “TEKEL, you have been weighed in the balances and found lacking. “PERES, your kingdom has been divided and given to the Medes and the Persians.” Then Belshazzar gives the command, and they clothe Daniel with purple and place a gold necklace around his neck; and they herald concerning him that he is to become the third ruler in the kingdom. That very night Belshazzar the Chaldean king is killed. And Darius the Mede receives the kingdom; he is about 62 years old.

- When you read this chapter, you can see that times change, kings change!

- But Daniel keeps being the same!

- He still has God’s spirit!

- He is still able to tell about visions and dreams and their interpretations!

- And he is the only one in Babylon!

- So apparently nothing has changed regarding this!

- Daniel doesn’t care about the kings’ gifts!

- Of course, he knows the game is over for him!

- And he is the only one to know!

- And he tells the king that he has acted badly against God and he will pay the price that is death!

- And Daniel keeps building his relationship with God!

- It keeps growing and growing!

- In fact, it’s like the universe which keeps growing and growing!

- And it should be like our brains which are supposed to keep growing and growing through all the connections between our neurons!

- And getting older shouldn’t stop it!

- It’s like nature which keeps growing and growing!

- It’s like life itself which keeps growing and growing!

- In fact, if it doesn’t keep growing, it’s dead!

- But it’s not the case with Daniel!

- And may we listen to God’s warning through Daniel:

- MENE, God has numbered the days of your kingdom and brought it to an end!

- TEKEL, you have been weighed in the balances and found lacking!

- PERES, your kingdom has been divided and given to the Medes and the Persians.

- And that very night, the king was killed!

If Daniel had had children, how would he have educated them?

Daniel 4:

- Daniel could tells kings about their visions or dreams and their interpretations!

- He could also use them to teach his children!

- And the case of Nebuchadnezzar is a good one not to follow!

- He was a great king and because of his pride, God condemned him to behave like an animal before he could recover his mind!

- His power didn’t help him!

- They could also see the difference with their father who always showed humility in any aspect of his life!

- And he was appreciated by kings even if others were jealous of him!

If Daniel had friends…

Daniel 6:

- They would speak about Daniel and the lions’ pit!

- Thinking about what happened to important people because of their pride and jealousy would mean another great source of inspiration!

- They would think of such an event again and again!

- It would show the importance to put God at the first place no matter the consequences are!

- It is a matter of exclusive attachment!

- And it shows us the way!

- So powerful and even more powerful when you think about it again and again to make it more alive as if we you were seeing it with your own eyes!

- Do you feel goose bumps on your skin when you visualize the situation?

Christian Impact

Frances and Joseph Gies, G. G. Coulton, Shulamith Shahar, Erika Uitz, and Heath Dillard have all pointed to the fact that in the Christian-dominated areas, the overall context is misogynist and patriarchal. In many Christian European countries, legislation established women as chattel, to be protected, chastised, and controlled. Men were empowered to rule and punish their wives. The Christian Church advocated male dominance and displayed misogyny. There is a theological heritage of patriarchal beliefs that compare woman’s relationship to man with that of man’s relationship to God. Thus, many clerics recommend that a wife submit to a husband’s rule regardless of the amount of abuse she receives. A fifteenth-century Sienese church publication, “Rules of Marriage” (Cherubino de Siena, Regole della vita matrimoniale, Bologna, 1888), which was endorsed by the Catholic church, instructed men to “…scold her sharply, bully and terrify her. And if this still doesn’t work ... take up a stick and beat her soundly … not in rage, but out of charity and concern for her soul. …” Dillard writes that wife beating, permitted in canon law, was not altogether unknown and possibly even recommended. She describes how in the Leonese town of Benavente (Spain), and other communities that adopted its customs in the late twelfth and thirteenth centuries, a husband was granted immunity when, by chance, his wife died after he had thrashed her. The assumption was that he was beating her for educational and correctional purposes.

Although it is not clear to what extent Christian teaching influenced Jewish communities, G. G. Coulton compares the decision of Rabbi Perez b. Elijah of Corbeil (thirteenth century) with the pronouncement of the Dominican Nicolaus de Byard (French friar, famous preacher and moral theologian, d. 1261) of exactly this same period. “A man may chastise his wife and beat her (verberare) for her correction; for she is of his household, and therefore the Lord may chastise his own, as it is written in Gratian’s Decretum (Bologna, 1140 c.e.).” He also quotes the Corpus Juris Canonici (Decretum Gratiani Causa 33, question 5, chapters 11, 13, 15 and 19. Corpus Juris Canonici, edited by A. Friedberg, Leipzig 1879–1881; reprint Graz 1955; vol. 1, col. 1254–1256) to show that “woman was not made in God’s image” and therefore it is natural for her to serve her husband. The husband is the head of the wife, the man’s head is Christ.”

Coulton implies that the Jews were not like this because they are an older Jewish civilization unlike the comparatively recent feudal lords whose fathers had just recently broken off from the Roman Empire. Coulton was extensively quoted by later Jewish apologists to show that Jewish clerics do not allow wifebeaters to go unpunished. Many of these very stern, anti-wifebeating responses date from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries among the Jews of Ashkenaz in Germany and France. Here we have a clear attitude that rejects the beating of wives without any qualifications.

This may explain why R. Perez b. Elijah became an advocate on the issue of wifebeating. He felt that cases of maltreatment of wives by husbands that came before the Ashkenazi rabbis were not taken seriously enough. So he proposed a takkanah (regulation enacted by halakhic scholars supplementing the Talmudic halakhah) on the subject of wifebeating. He considered “one who beats his wife is in the same category as one who beats a stranger” and “therefore decreed that any Jew may be compelled on application of his wife or one of her near relatives to undertake by a herem not to beat his wife in anger or cruelty so as to disgrace her, for that is against Jewish practice.” If the husband refuses to obey, the Court will “assign her maintenance according to her station and according to the custom of the place where she dwells. They shall fix her alimony as though her husband were away on a distant journey.” It is not clear whether this takkanah ever received serious consideration.

If Daniel had a wife…

- Now Daniel had a different mentality!

- He would not let himself influenced by Babylonian culture!

- He would keep being faithful to his faith and to his God and to God’s word!

- He would not behave like the majority of the Jews!

- He would not participate to their sins!

- He would respect his wife!

- He would give a good example to his children!

6) If Daniel had children what type of school would he promote?

Daniel 1:
Then the king ordered Ashpenaz his chief court official to bring some of the Israelites, including those of royal and noble descent. They were to be youths without any defect, of good appearance, endowed with wisdom, knowledge, and discernment, and capable of serving in the king’s palace. He was to teach them the writing and the language of the Chaldeans. - They should learn how to respect life because it’s a gift from God!

- Thus they should learn how to be responsible and be careful of others’ lives!

- And another good way would be to visit people would have been injured because of car accidents or people who are disabled!

- Then they could see by themselves how easy it is to be injured and have a big accident and lose the control of your body!

- They could also learn how to preserve their own lives!

- But you don’t get this knowledge by reading books but by meeting real people and spending time with them and speaking with them and helping them!

- We don’t get this knowledge when we are young and tha’s why we are where we are!

Geographical locations in the book of Daniel

Daniel 8:

- Ulai:

https://www.biblestudytools.com/dictionary/ulai/

The Eulaus of the Greeks; a river of Susiana. It was probably the eastern branch of the Choasper (Kerkhan), which divided into two branches some 20 miles above the city of Susa. Hence ( Daniel 8:2 Daniel 8:16 ) speaks of standing "between the banks of Ulai", i.e., between the two streams of the divided river.

u'-li, u'-lai ('ubhal 'ulay, "river Ulai"; Theodotion Daniel 8:2, Oubal, the Septuagint and Theodotion in 8:16, Oulai Latin, Eulaeus):

1. The Name and Its Forms:
A river which, running through the province of Elam, flowed through Shushan or Susa. It was from "between" this river that Daniel (8:16) heard a voice, coming apparently from the waters which flowed between its two banks.

2. Present Names and Course:
Notwithstanding that the rivers of Elam have often changed their courses, there is but little doubt that the Ulai is the Kerkhah, which, rising in the Persian plain near Nehavend (there called the Gamas-ab), is even there a great river. Turned by the mountains, it runs Northwest as far as Bisutun, receiving all the waters of Southern Kurdistan, where, as the Sein Merre, it passes through the inaccessible defiles of Luristan, its course before reaching the Kebir-Kuh being a succession of rapids. Turned aside by this mountain, it follows for about 95 miles the depression which here exists as far as the foothills of Luristan, reaching the Susian plain as a torrent; but it becomes less rapid before losing itself in the marshes of Hawizeh. The course of the stream is said to be still doubtful in places.

3. Changed Bed at Susa:
In ancient times it flowed at the foot of the citadel of Susa, but its bed is now about 1 1/4 miles to the West. The date of this change of course (during which a portion of the ruins of Susa was carried away) is uncertain, but it must have been later than the time of Alexander the Great. The stream's greatest volume follows the melting of the snows in the mountains, and floods ensue if this coincides with the advent of heavy rain. Most to be dreaded are the rare occasions when it unites with the Ab-e-Diz.

4. Assyrian References:
The Ulai (Assyrian Ulaa or Ulaia) near Susa is regarded as being shown on the sculptures of the Assyrian king Ashur-bani-pal (British Museum, Nineveh Gal.) illustrating his campaign against Te-umman. Its rapid stream bears away the bodies of men and horses, with chariots, bows and quivers. The bodies which were thrown into the stream hindered its course, and dyed its waters with their blood.

Geographical locations in the book of Daniel

Daniel 10:

- Uphaz:

https://www.biblestudy.org/meaning-names/uphaz.html

Bible Meaning: Desire of fine gold
Strong's Concordance #H210
Uphaz was a region known for its high quality gold. The location of the region is unknown.
The five Biblical places known for producing gold are Havilah (Genesis 2:11 - 12), Sheba (1Kings 10:2, 10), Ophir (Job 28:16), Uphaz (Jeremiah 10:7 - 9, Daniel 10:4 - 6) and Parvaim (2Chronicles 3:6).

The Jerusalem Talmud states that there were seven kinds of gold. These were good gold, pure, precious, gold from Uphaz, purified, refined, and Parvaim's red gold.

Important verses
Jeremiah 10:7 - 9
Who would not fear thee, O King of nations? for to thee doth it appertain: forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is none like unto thee. But they are altogether brutish and foolish: the stock is a doctrine of vanities.
Silver spread into plates is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the workman, and of the hands of the founder: blue and purple is their clothing: they are all the work of cunning men.

Daniel 10:2, 4 - 6
In those days I Daniel was mourning three full weeks . . .
And in the four and twentieth day of the first month, as I was by the side of the great river, which is Hiddekel; Then I lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a certain man clothed in linen, whose loins were girded with fine gold of Uphaz: His body also was like the beryl, and his face as the appearance of lightning . . .
