So the Bible says that blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is an unforgivable sin but it is vague on what exactly blaspheming the Holy Spirit is. What do you think would constitute blaspheming the Holy Spirit?
Matthew 12:31-32 is a tricky passage and it needs to be read carefully, it doesn't specifically say that the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is an unforgivable sin it says:
31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost
shall not be forgiven unto men.
32 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it
shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.
To say that one
shall not be forgiven does not say that one shall not be forgiven
because they blaspheme the Holy Ghost. Take a look at verse 33-34:
33 Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit.
34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
It needs to be understood that in verse 24 the Pharisees accused Jesus of casting out devils by the power of Beelzebub, When Christ performed miracles before their eyes rather than believing on the evidence they resorted to blasphemously reasoning and declaring out loud that Christ did his miracles by the power of the devil. Verse 33-34 talks about the state of the Pharisees hearts being the underlying cause of why they blasphemed the Holy Ghost and what they spoke out loud was the evidence of what was in their hearts. It was the state of their hearts and their unwillingness to believe which rendered them unforgivable not the blasphemy of the Holy Ghost itself. I don't believe that blaspheming the Holy Ghost in the sense of equating the work of Christ with the work of the devil means someone cannot be forgiven. In the case of the Pharisees it came from the heart and showed in their cases that they were too stubborn and obstinate to believe in Christ's works since they were direct witnesses to his miracles. Anybody who is worried that they have committed the blasphemy of the Holy Ghost should not fret since worrying that your not saved or cannot be saved is a clear sign that your heart is not so stubborn.
