It's interesting that the higher frequencies work for only shorter distances but can pipe data faster. Which makes me think that if 6G is ever implemented they might need to make every device a signal repeater. Talk about heat...

From what I have been able to gather online since the question about heat was asked, it seems 5G generates more heat because your phone is in fact connecting to a lot of little signals all at once. Instead of monolithic cell towers, 5G depends a lot more on networked transmitters and your phone being able to connect to multiple transmitters at the same time.
