I agree. But I've been looking for a replacement for Mint.

In specific search for one that is designed with what you want to do with it...Mint's absolutely fantastic right?,,,just too many pot holes in your road so you need a 4 wheel drive...

The problem isn't with Mint per say, it's with Ubuntu that Mint is built on.

Well I'm using Ubuntu 18.04.3,,,I have now about 10 years. I have never installed an antivirus software and have never looked at any firewalls(just straight from the download the way it came). I did let it upgrade from 14. to 16 then to 18 as it offered it across time. Now I suppose an many an hacker has examined it over the years and noticed that I store no files and that I clear history, cookies ect. several times a day and have no bookmarks but in the end well they have the option of stealing a free OS or if they were to ask nicely ,,,well I would look up a download for it and copy and paste it for them. That's me though cut to the chase,,,let the hackers spend hours digging through an OS only to realize it's free on the web and my stuff's on another computer.

Linux is like shopping for a vehicle some need a car that gets good gas mileage others need a truck to haul stuff. I need this and you need that. Anyway if your gonna do gaming,,,search for a distro aimed at gaming. If your gonna mine Crypto look for something designed around that. There's an OS aimed at business, one for someone hopping from M$ to Linux,,,one that's good for music, photos(list goes on and on),,,,that's the thing about Linux in that your looking for an OS built around what YOUR going to use it for,,,
Or a whole system built around watching streaming video...

Or a whole computer system built around the idea that you can use a computer as a guitar FX rack! o_O

So you use a Linux install on USB storage... And you don't care if you get hacked... And you keep all your important files on offline storage...

Are you my clone?

I'm pretty sure I'm not doing a Jekyll and Hyde thing here, but I have to wonder if you're me under another user account and Me hasn't let Myself know about it.

lol,, after trying things the other way I ended up with a garage full of computer parts in my garage and spent more time reformatting than surfing. After a while it evolved into this one does this and this one does that. That USB port in the end I notice runs way faster than any CD or HD can spin, it really made things a whole lot easier.

Only if you use the right flash drive. Some of them cannot handle read and write of a lot of files, all less than 1 mb, very fast.

Right now I'm using a lexar low profile flash drive. Before that I was using a little SanDisk low profile chip. Low profile so I won't accidentally hit the flash drive and mess up a USB port.

What kind of stick are you using right now?

At the moment just an OS on a SD card with an adapter, both from Walmart. Bare in mind though the only thing I use this computer for is to surf the web(here on CC,news ect.)

Okay I never looked till now but I pulled it out and took a magnifying glass and it's a Dane micro SD adapter and a PNY 16gb micro SD. This might not work for everyone but it does what I want. A few years back I had a laptop with a bad CD player and a bad HD both so I ran it about 6 months with "live puppy slacko". It runs from RAM so the more the better...

You guys are like gun enthusiasts who have like 10 assault weapons to “protect their family” while keeping them “secure” - instead of just saying “I like guns”.

Why don’t you just say “I like geeking around” instead of “privacy“?

:)

For me it's the privacy and productivity. For others it's a hobby. And yet for others it's a combination of the two or even three or even four things. Some have even said, it's for the fellowship of people. The list of reasons goes on...

I love these videos. :)

This might be a hard list for me to make. Not because I can't name a few things. But because I might not be able to remember everything to add to the list.

Things I don't need Windows for:

1) Surfing the Web and Email.
2) Forums.
3) Word Processing
4) Audio and Video editing.
5) Printing
6) Making CDs, DVDs, and Blu-Rays (Data and Audio Discs) *Been a little weak on the Video Disc for Video player side of things but it still can be done.
7) Formatting and partitioning Hard Drives, SSDs, and all sorts of Flash Drives.
8) Watch Videos either online or offline.

What I use Windows For:

1) Updating Firmware when the hardware vendor doesn't give me a choice
2) Check Disk on FAT, FAT 32, and exFat, formatted Flash Drives.

I'm not a gamer, but when I do game, it's usually in Dosbox, because I'm old school. That runs on either Linux or Windows.

I know your asking Ell1. But personally whenever I run a windows machine that touches the internet, I got all that junk on the machine. I wouldn't feel the least bit safe, without it.

Which is the point in that the only difference is one you get free verses having to pay for the M$...

It's funny the one you get free is more secure, and almost just as productive as the the one you pay money and get spied on. LOL!

The only Linux versions in my house are my PfSense box and my NAS.
