1 Thessalonians was written in 52AD. One of Paul's first writings (perhaps only Galatians was written before 1 Thessalonians). Also, perhaps only the Book of Matthew and the Book of James were in existence at that time but likely not widely distributed by the time 1 Thessalonians was written.
My point is, when Paul wrote "test everything" in 1 Thessalonians, with what were the believers to use to "test"? It certainly cannot be the New Testament.
The answer is found immediately before Paul wrote "test everything". The whole verse is this:
"Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise prophecies. 21 Test all things; hold fast what is good."
They were to test all things by the Spirit of God in them. He will, as Jesus prophesied "Guide them into all truth".
"However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come."
Well, they were to test all things both by GW (to the extent they could learn it) and via the HS (cf. Phil. 3:15-16).
BTW, Matthew incorporates much of Mark. Here is what Wikipedia says: "In the two-source hypothesis, the three-source hypothesis and the Q+/Papias hypothesis, Matthew and Luke both used Mark and Q as sources."
Not when it was written.
Doubtful they used the Old Testament, either, as it would not have been readily available to non-Greeks in Thessaloniki. Besides, the answer is right there in the same verse:
"Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise prophecies. 21 Test all things; hold fast what is good."
I'm all for Bible study, but even there the Spirit would have to teach the reader the essence of the reading.
Testing may have also included use of what was shared. The Lord gained wisdom by what He suffered and the wise, by consistent use of their grace, gain discernment.
"..though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. 9And having been perfected..."
"But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil."
So, if it was not good after testing (by use) the saint should discard it.
Yes, both GW and the HS are needed for learning what is true/good,
and we should never divorce them.
Can some one explain what WOF is to this old man?
But of the two, the Bible and the Holy Spirit, only one cannot be manipulated by man.
Don't be too sure. There is no way we or a pope can claim infallible certainty regarding either.
We cannot escape the necessity of faith because of the lack of perfect sight (2Cor. 5:7, 1Cor. 13:12).
I was wondering too but lol thought I’d sound foolish for asking hahahaCan some one explain what WOF is to this old man?
What’s the doctrine are you aware ?I believer it means Word of Faith.
Usually used to describe the Word of Faith movement. A charismatic branch of Christianity. I may be wrong though

Then we would have to start doubting scripture though which doesn’t seem like a good ideerBut of the two, the Bible and the Holy Spirit, only one cannot be manipulated by man.
Thanks for the reply .I’ve heard the term before but not sure what the doctrine is that they insist uponI cannot tell you. I only know of a few acronyms. As far as doctrine i couldn't tell you.
If it is charismatic, I will stay away.I believer it means Word of Faith.

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.”
2 Timothy 3:16-17 KJV
air we begin doubting that it’s authentic of sayong it’s corrupted our trust flies out the window of all the information God has made known to save us . And then everyone is left to think what they think and claim it’s gods spirit telling them
Is god capable of protecting the integrity of his word tbat he said would be preached to all creation ? I believe he is and so we can trust the scriptures without that trust we’re going to end up being “our own Bible “
“We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.”
2 Peter 1:19-21 KJV
