I can't seem to nail down a really good answer to this. I know this is what God required, but why did He require it?

Why was a sinless sacrifice necessary?

God set up the standard before man was created: "Let Us make man in our image and our likeness." Adam was not this man, otherwise there would not be a need for the "Last Adam". The man in the image and likeness of God was Jesus. When He died without sin, the spirits of Death and Hell, who had dominion over man because of sin, had no authority over Him. His subsequent resurrection made a spectacle of the two powers that ruled the lives of all men through time: death and staying dead.
He died as Jesus but He arose as the Life-Giving Spirit. Like a seed that is planted and dies does not produce simply another seed but a tree that contains many seeds, even a whole forest given time. Now, all who, by faith, accept Him as their Lord and Savior, are included in the life-giving Spirit called Christ, the many-membered Son who bears the image and likeness of God. They, too, escape the rule of Death and Hell over their lives.

But, because He was perfect in the sight of God, He arose triumphant over all the powers of evil; "O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?" God demands the blood of man for his sin. That is how serious it is with God.
Lev. 17:11
"For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul."
This is why Christ had to become man and shed His blood for all of us. The innocent blood of Christ, who lived this life as we and yet without sin. His blood would satisfy the just demands of God, being that He became man to pay our sin debt in full.
If there had been any other way for mans sin debt to be paid other than by blood, God would not have passed this judgement onto Christ for us.
God told Adam that when you eat of this tree (in other words sin by disobeying) you will die. This death is both physical and spiritual.
"The wages of sin is death" and the life of man is in the blood. God provided for us the Blood of Christ who was the ONLY perfect sacrifice for the sin of man.
When the priests would offer up an animal on the alter that was spotless and perfect, that animal represented Christ and His Blood sacrifice for man. This is how God could tell them under the Law "I have given it to you upon the alter to make atonement for your souls."
Faith in that animal sacrifice was evidencing faith in the coming Messiah who would sacrifice Himself for mans sin with His own Blood.

CARM lays out a pretty good explanation of it. In essence, the Law exists to show just how feeble we are to please God. Man couldn't keep the Law and therefore needed a Savior. Because God is perfect and without sin, only a sacrifice that is without sin would do. All of our righteousness, all we can offer, are but "filthy rags" (Isaiah 64:6).
God can do what we cannot and can never hope to do. And He did, by sending His perfect Son to die as a ransom for us.

sacrifice their life for that guy? . . . another sinful man, ad infinitum?
Christ had to be sinless in order to make it possible to seal the deal with just
one sacrifice instead of an endless parade of sinful guys each in turn sacrificing
themselves for the sinful sacrificer that preceded them.

Pardon me, but the first line of the CARM site is this: "The reason Jesus had to die for our sins was so that we could be forgiven and go to be with the Lord."
In my humble opinion, the start of the essay is actually half way through the full story. Our story begins in the mind of God from the foundation of the world, not at the cross.
It also assumes the goal of salvation is "being with Jesus". This, too, falls short of God's intention.

I was thinking about this, and I believe the reason He had to be sinless was so He could be raised from the dead. "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." The only way God could be just in raising Him from the dead was if He was sinless. And without the resurrection, as we know, the gospel amounts to nothing.
Interesting. I never thought of it like that. My first inclination was "That's not right!" But I try to look at things from all sides, and that statement has merit!
Because animal sacrifices were only temporary, they took the debt of sin away from the people. Animals are not made in the image of God and are not of the same essence as a human.
But not any old human could be a sacrifice either.
God is holy and therefore perfect. You would need a holy perfect sacrifice to reach that level of atonement.
As to why the only candidate was God Himself in the incarnation of Jesus Christ.
The quality of the burnt offerings the Jews used was based partly on the physical appearance of the animal. If the lamb was fat and spotless then that was considered a high quality sacrifice. Jesus was spiritually perfect, spiritually spotless, and also the Son of God. That made Jesus a better sacrifice than animals; so much better, in fact, that His sacrifice forgives sins permanently.
There's a good section about this in Hebrews that I highly recommend. I think chapters 9 and 10 of Hebrews are an excellent starting point. Really take your time on Hebrews, there's a lot of good information in there.

Jesus died to fulfill the curse of death upon every sinner. If he would have sinned he could not have risen from death because all who sin are condemned to death as the first scripture shows

if we believe in Christ our sin is remitted through his death (he took our place ) so Gods word was fulfilled about sin and death in Christ. What this means is we die without sin and death cannot claim us because already Gods word of sin and death was fulfilled

We died for our sins in the body of Christ when we joined him in baptism his perfect life was given for remission of our sins so when we die death has no claim on our soul

a perfect man had to die for the sinful men or they were all Lost to death but because he had no sin it was not possible for death to hold him

A DIVINELY INFINITE, SINLESS HUMAN was required.

Are you saying God sent Jesus Christ to die for no reason? Because Christ made it clear He came to die. The Bible makes it clear that the plan for His sacrifice was established before the foundations of the world.
Next you'll be denying that Christ DID die at all, at which point we will know you for an agent of the devil.

You err, not knowing the Scriptures.
Moses was told to STRIKE the Rock in the wilderness ONCE, and then SPEAK to the Rock the second time.
He STRUCK the Rock TWICE, breaking the type, and for this he was forbidden from entering the Promised Land.
Why was striking the Rock TWICE a serious disobedience?

Christ was stricken ONCE for sins, NO MORE AND NO LESS. Old Testament believers are saved through faith by looking forward to Christ's sacrifice, and New Testament believers are saved by faith looking back.
Christ did not need to spill blood every time He forgave sins, like some pathetic anime character invoking his powers.

Direct forgiveness sins of human by God is different from the meaning of Jesus Christ's crucifixion.
