I understand that Peter means "rock". But Peter was not a stable man most of the time. He was volatile and passionate.

What makes him a "rock"?

(no Catholic nonsense please).

First off being passionate is not being unstable. And we are all volatile even though some of us might think differently.

Jesus does not give names like most of us do. Most of the time if we issue a name to a child it is because we like the name or the meaning of the name and we issue the child with this name. In certain it is based upon what is seen at the birth of the child. God gives us names based what He sees in us and the potential we have and what we are going to grow into, not what we are at that moment.

We can clearly see this in the meaning of
Moses being Saviour - but he was given that name at birth. Yet only 80 years later did he actually bring this prophecy into completion.
Jesus being God is Salvation ... I don't think I need to explain that.

Peter, in Hebrew means "first born son" (Strong's 6363). Peter had just realized Jesus is the Messiah (Matt. 16:16-18), hence he was the first born of the adopted sons of God. In Greek, Peter means rock, and Jesus exploited the meaning to say the first born of His ministry would be the first stone laid in the Church. IMO. Jesus is actually prophesying to Peter, and speaking for the Father.

Matt 16:18- And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. I believe the rock on which the church is built is Jesus himself, not Peter. This is affirmed in 1 Peter 2:7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner. Peter, as well as other apostles, was an instrument furnished by Christ for the furtherance of the early church, but Jesus is the solid rock of the church.
The OT prophecy reveals that the promised Messiah will be the corner stone of Zion (Isaiah 28:16), the head of the church. The stone will be tried but it will be a firm and everlasting one sustaining the church that will be able to stand the test of time that the gates of hell will not prevail against it. The stone will bring refuge and salvation to those who believe (Acts 4:12). The precious stone will be smitten but the blood that flows out will not be in vain, it will be a soul-cleansing blood freely available that those who come in contact with it will be washed as white as snow. The stone will bring forth refreshing living water through an abundant grace for those that are thirsty for truth and nourishment for believers [Exodus 17:6, 1 Cor 10:4]. It will also be a rejected and stumbling stone of unbelievers.
Isa 28:16- Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
Parallel NT passages:
Eph 2:20- And are built upon thefoundationof the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;
1 Cor 3:11- For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

Peter was the first to acknowledge that Jesus is the Son of God. Peter acknowledged this by faith. Jesus told him after his confession that he did not believe this of himself but only because the Father in heaven revealed it to him.

Mat 16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

Mat 16:17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed [it] unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

Peter means rock in greek.
1 Peter 2:3 If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious. To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

Mat 16:18 And I say also unto you, That you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Imagine,i will give u reall Catholic answer on your question and i must disappoint u.

You are Peter (Petros(stone)), and on this rock (petra), not on Peter, i.e. on the rock of faith will build His church.
So answer on your question is that upstairs. ICXC NIKA

It was also a PROPHETIC move on Jesus' part: Calling Peter "rock" was to DECLARE that he was now stable.

Jesus called Peter (Petros) which means stone, smaller stone, not rock(!) as Roman Catholic claim,to show that his faith was firm as stone!

He is one of the foundation stones of the church.

Revelation 21:14
Now the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb

Ephesians 2:19-21

19 Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord,

1Pe_2:5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

I see that both perspectives can be true at the same time, so the safe perspective I have is to understand that both can be true.

But why was there even a need to rename him at all?

God often renames people, He did with me, and I know many others too. With me He told me to reclaim my name back on my birth certificate that was changed when I was adopted. My first name means " Victory for the people" and my surname means Church. Interestingly enough, when people called me by my adoptive name it never felt right in my spirit....like that wasnt me. Since I legally changed my name a few yers ago I now have MY identity, it fits well in my spirit.

After expressing approval of Peter’s response, Jesus says: “I say to you, You are Peter, and on this rock-mass I will build my congregation, and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.” Here Jesus first announces that he will build a congregation and that even death will not hold its members captive after their faithful course on earth. Then he tells Peter: “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of the heavens.”
Jesus was not giving Peter special privileges or a place first among the apostles, nor is he made the foundation of the congregation. Jesus himself is the Rock-mass upon which his congregation will be built. Peter is to be given three keys with which to open, as it were, the opportunity for groups of people to enter the Kingdom of the heavens.
Peter used the first key at Pentecost 33 C.E. when he showed repentant Jews what they must do to be saved. He used the second shortly afterward when he opened to believing Samaritans the opportunity to enter God’s Kingdom. Then, in 36 C.E. he used the third key by opening to uncircumcised Gentiles, Cornelius and his friends, the same opportunity.
Jesus, who was able to discern that Nathanael was a man “in whom there is no deceit,” could also discern Peter’s makeup. Peter, indeed, displayed rocklike qualities, especially after Jesus’ death and resurrection, becoming a strengthening influence on his fellow Christians.—John 1:47, 48; 2:25; Luke 22:32.

Jesus couldn't remember Simon's name, so he just called him Peter. The name stuck.

"Why did he change his name from Simon to Peter"
They got tired of playing, "Simon said?"

I'm sorry. That one has always hit my funny bone. ( walks away with stright face.lol)

So instead they played, Fly Away, Peter, Fly Away, Peter. Come Back, Peter, Come Back, Paul.

Yes but he immediately rebuked Peter and said get thee behind me satan. Peter was not the rock that He spoke of. Jesus is the rock and the only rock.Jesus and the work He did on the cross is the only place where we can put our faith. We can place our faith in, no man, or ritual or law. The only thing God will accept is Jesus Christ and Him crucified. If it is Peter as pope, then we have failed. If it is Paul then we fail. It is only the cross. It is the cross that saves us. It is the cross sanctifies us, it is the cross that sets us free cross. Not attending mass or church on Sunday, not praying, not studying word ( as you can see on CC many think they know the word and do not believe). Then what is it. It is faith in the work of the cross. There is nothing else we can do. Some on CC say keep the law, you cannot keep the law if your faith is in the law. It must be in the work of the cross. God will not accept anything else. Why people want to rely on there works is beyond me. Only if our faith is firmly seated In the cross can the Holy Spirit produce in us good works. It's not praying, it's not study, it's not fasting, It's not attending church. It is resting in the work of christ and The Spirit will produce study and attendance and fasting in us. If we do it by human means it is rejected by God. It must be through the cross. Many on this forum try to comprehend the word by their own means. meaning their own intellect and education, you can not. It Must be by the Spirit. Look, God promised Abraham a son, He was old and so was his wife. So,they schemed and he lay with her maid and had a son. He was rejected by God and the son that god had promised came and was accepted. It is by God and through God and there is no other way. Amen

I wish I could type. Sorry folks

I never really understood the debate on this. Peter (Petros- Rock) vs Petra-Rock. One is masculine which is assigned to the person of Peter. The other, the rock that Jesus would build His Church is feminine. One needs to remember the Jesus is the Bridegroom and His Church which is built by faith in Him is the Bride. This the passage in question is not referring to Peter alone but to all whom would come to trust in Christ through confession and repentance. This is precisely what Peter had just done.

Peter had offered a confession, given by the Holy Spirit through Peter. A confession which meets half of the requirements for salvation today. Remember the words of Paul confess and repent. Later after the resurrection of Christ would the Lord receive Peter's repentance. This puzzle is not so hard and as I stated in my opening remark, I do not know why this debate is still ongoing.

In Christ,

Bishop SEH

There is nothing we can do except say thank you Jesus. It is our human nature to provide our own salvation (Romans 7). But, the only thing that can is the cross. I would beg any of you to say differ. Can you keep the ten commandments without the cross. Can you keep anything without the cross and I'm talking about your faith.
