I understand that Peter means "rock". But Peter was not a stable man most of the time. He was volatile and passionate.
What makes him a "rock"?
Matt 16:18- And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. I believe the rock on which the church is built is Jesus himself, not Peter. This is affirmed in 1 Peter 2:7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner. Peter, as well as other apostles, was an instrument furnished by Christ for the furtherance of the early church, but Jesus is the solid rock of the church.I understand that Peter means "rock". (no Catholic nonsense please).

It was also a PROPHETIC move on Jesus' part: Calling Peter "rock" was to DECLARE that he was now stable.

But why was there even a need to rename him at all?

Peter, in Hebrew means "first born son" (Strong's 6363). Peter had just realized Jesus is the Messiah (Matt. 16:16-18), hence he was the first born of the adopted sons of God. In Greek, Peter means rock, and Jesus exploited the meaning to say the first born of His ministry would be the first stone laid in the Church. IMO. Jesus is actually prophesying to Peter, and speaking for the Father.
Yes but he immediately rebuked Peter and said get thee behind me satan. Peter was not the rock that He spoke of. Jesus is the rock and the only rock.Jesus and the work He did on the cross is the only place where we can put our faith. We can place our faith in, no man, or ritual or law. The only thing God will accept is Jesus Christ and Him crucified. If it is Peter as pope, then we have failed. If it is Paul then we fail. It is only the cross. It is the cross that saves us. It is the cross sanctifies us, it is the cross that sets us free cross. Not attending mass or church on Sunday, not praying, not studying word ( as you can see on CC many think they know the word and do not believe). Then what is it. It is faith in the work of the cross. There is nothing else we can do. Some on CC say keep the law, you cannot keep the law if your faith is in the law. It must be in the work of the cross. God will not accept anything else. Why people want to rely on there works is beyond me. Only if our faith is firmly seated In the cross can the Holy Spirit produce in us good works. It's not praying, it's not study, it's not fasting, It's not attending church. It is resting in the work of christ and The Spirit will produce study and attendance and fasting in us. If we do it by human means it is rejected by God. It must be through the cross. Many on this forum try to comprehend the word by their own means. meaning their own intellect and education, you can not. It Must be by the Spirit. Look, God promised Abraham a son, He was old and so was his wife. So,they schemed and he lay with her maid and had a son. He was rejected by God and the son that god had promised came and was accepted. It is by God and through God and there is no other way. Amen
