It is a gift and gifted at the will of God. There are two types. Soeaking a foreign language without prior knowledge or an angelic language that needs to be equipped with the gift of interpretation. If not then they should pray to themselves. Scripture also says that tongues is a gift to edify unbelievers while prophecy for believers. So it isn't as common as some churches try to make it be.

Romans 12
6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying,
then prophesy in accordance with your faith; 7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then
teach; 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously;
if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

1 Corinthians 14
1 Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy.
2 For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands
him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. 3 On the other hand, the one who prophesies
speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. 4 The one
who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the
church. 5 Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. The one
who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone
interprets, so that the church may be built up.

1 Corinthians 12:30
Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?

1 Corinthians 13:8
Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.

1 Corinthians 14:4
The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church.

1 Corinthians 14:14
For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful.

1 Corinthians 14:19
Nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

Thanks…but the scripture says you need to be baptized with the Holy Spirit for you to speak in tongues so does it mean I am not yet baptized with the Holy Spirit

No. Everyone does not get the same gifts.

It is only one of many spiritual gifts. Just because you can't speak in tongues doesn't mean you do not have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

The only thing to ask yourself is have you accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. That is what dictates you gaining the Spirit.

1 Peter 4:10
Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve
others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.

1 Corinthians 12:7-11
Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the
message of knowledge by the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit,
to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another the working of miracles,
to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking
in various tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are
the work of one and the same Spirit, who apportions them to each one as He determines.

Ephesians 4:11-12
And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

Why can’t i speak in tongues as a Christian
“Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?”
‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭12:27-30‬ ‭KJV‬‬

the spiritual gifts have a purpose of everyone was babbling in tou he’s no one would be gifted to interpret , if all were called to be apostles who would be called to do the other services ?

we are like a body body has many pets which each have a different function that works together an eye can’t speak , a mouth can speak but can’t see it needs the eye , the eye and mouth can see and speak but they can’t hear anything they need ears also

the hands have thoer function , the feet have thiers ect

each Christian has some spiritual gifts me few some many but not everyone is called to each gift like tongues some have hat gift other have other gifts it’s meant to bring us together because we need each other to be complete speaking of the church not the individual

As others have said, speaking in tongues is a gift.

If you haven’t been given that gift it doesn’t make you a second class Christian in the Kingdom of God.

Do not let anyone tell you that it’s a sign are saved.

I was told years ago because I didn’t speak in tongues it was evidence I was NOT saved.

Reject any such thoughts/notions of ever said to you.

God bless.
Seek him and righteousness first and foremost.

To be baptized with the Holy Spirit is in fact to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. All those who repent and believe on Christ receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. So if you have repented and believed you have received the Spirit. That does not automatically mean that you will speak in tongues.

There is no need to hanker after modern tongues. Focus on the spiritual gift or gifts that God has given you. There are a total of about 20 gifts, and surely you have at least one.

But the Bible says speaking in tongues is an evidence or sign of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Act 2 verse 4

Why can’t i speak in tongues as a Christian
Because its not promised that you can.
The promise of receiving the Holy Ghost is about receiving salvation not signs. You receive by faith not assurance in signs.
