When you spend several months beating UIL Contest repertoire into your students, certain pieces can infect your brain in an unshakable way. While not technically a song, my 8th graders will be performing this chart at two contests in upcoming weeks. We rarely perform programmatic works, but it's good writing, and when the kids found about that it depicted the Nazis attempted siege of Moscow and how the Russian peasants defeated the Germans with farm tools, they really latched on to it. They're as bad as I am - they walk around the school humming the main theme all day.

I totally dig the band that the song is about. I'm very unhappy that Barlowgirl "broke up" (they're sisters, after all), because they wrote some stuff that really speaks to me. And I think that A Child Is Born is probably the best new, original Christmas anthem in the last 15-20 years.

I didn't know they broke up. Musicians are difficult people to live with. I learned that lesson the hard way.
