Hey Everyone,

I was texting with my Dad this morning over a problem I know I can help him with the next time I'm over. And I was thanking God that I'm able to help my parents with the little that I know (my siblings are the street and tech smart ones, but I'm glad I can occasionally be useful.) :)

My parents have had various dwellings over the years, but I always smile when I think of a certain item my Dad always has somewhere in his office:

shopping

My favorite comic strip as a kid was always Garfield the cat, but my Dad and I always had a "rivalry" going because I liked Garfield, and my Dad was partial to Odie. He said he rooted for Odie because Garfield picked on him so unfairly. (Humph!)

One day when my Mom took us with her grocery shopping as kids, I saw that Odie pencil topper and even I had to admit how cute it was -- and a perfect gift for my Dad. I begged her to let me buy it with my allowance. And now, decades later, that little Odie pencil topper ALWAYS has a place somewhere in my Dad's office.

And this was always part of the fun for me when they would move to a new place. Whenever I walked into Dad's space, I would look for Odie -- and when I saw him, I knew my parents were "home."

My parents only keep things they find essential and are used to downsizing. What a lot of people might keep for various reasons, including sentimental, my parents can chuck in the blink of an eye (not because they don't care, but because they just keep the bare minimum.)

The fact that this little rubber trinket most anyone else would have thrown away has made the cut for so many years gives me the warm fuzzies, and whenever I see it in a new location, I know I'm at "home" with Mom and Dad, even though I'm just visiting.

How about you?

Now of course, I know the most popular and most heartfelt answer is that home is where our hearts and the people we love are.

But besides the people we love, what makes where you live uniquely YOURS? What binds your heart to the space around you?

* Is it the memories you're surrounded by? (But what happens if you have to move?)

* What meaningful things do you take with you everywhere you live? (Pictures, keepsakes, collections, a certain color, etc.?)

* If you had to start over in a new space, what would make it feel like "home" to you? (Setting up your kitchen or garage in a certain way; arranging your equipment for a favorite hobby, a certain decorating style, etc.?)

* Have you ever had to live somewhere that didn't feel like home? How did you survive?

* Are you someone who has never felt "at home"? Why? What would change that? And if you finally found something that felt like home, what made it different?

Most people know that there is a huge difference between a "living space" and something that truly feels like "home."

I would really like to hear about what YOUR definition of "home" -- or private personal space -- really is. 💖🏠

I loved reading your story! So sweet 🥹

I like having houseplants in my space. I also like my journals. A couple of pictures too: I have a picture of my dad on my desk and a picture of the Grizzly Adams signed by Dan Haggerty that dad got from Dan Haggerty for me that hangs on the wall. I like birds nests (real ones), pinecones, and other interesting things like that (magnolia pods, acorns, etc.). I guess I bring the outdoors in...I'm country lol.
I like vintage items too and sometimes I like to have something antiquey and rusty. For example, I have a boot sized vintage iron shoe repair stand with shoe form. I saw it at one of my fleamarket visits and thought it was interesting and needed to be in my dwelling lol.
I have my dad's vintage Pyrex glass stovetop coffee percolators and I have Taylor's (a close friend who passed) dad's vintage butterfly toaster. I just love the look of vintage items.

If I travel/stay somewhere else for a while, I take the 2 pictures and the journals with me. Then pick up a houseplant or bouquet of flowers there if needed. And I'll pick up something while I'm out on a walk or hike, a neat rock or seashell or whatever grabs my eye. I do limit what I bring in and how much! lol. I just like having a few things like that near me, I guess because I've always liked the great outdoors.

Thanks so much, CarriePie!

I love that your Dad specifically got a SIGNED picture just for you, and that you bring a bit of what you love most -- the outdoors -- into every space you occupy. Even here on CC! :D

Vintage things are cool, especially when the owners have histories to go with the item -- a lot of times, I have found myself more in love with the stories rather than just the items themselves!

And I love how you make everywhere you go into a bit of home. That's probably why I take a stuffed friend with me as well (oh, and to annoy some particular people... though I probably shouldn't admit that in public!)

I'm also pretty sure that every kitchen that had the blessing of being graced with your presence would begin to smell and feel like home -- just as soon as you started cooking! :D

But besides the people we love, what makes where you live uniquely YOURS? What binds your heart to the space around you?

I have a few keepsakes that the kids made when they were little. I keep those in my room. The other things that make home Home is the tools in my garage, my coffee area, bookshelves full of books, the grill etc..

😀

I used to say that home is where your internet wifi is. But nobody has home internet anymore. (Well, online competitive gamers do, but...)

Wherever you roam
Your phone goes too
But home's where your laptop lives

This brings to mind A Miracle on 34th Street! but I can't think of what my 'walking cane' might be. Something Hello Kitty, possibly.

I must be old school. I use home internet and I'm not a gamer. Whenever I'm on this site or other sites, I'm on home internet. I actually find using my phone for anything other than calls or texting to be annoying.

plants are important to me.a reminder of natures beauty.

Many years ago, my Mom gave me a pothos cutting and, not knowing anything about plants, I put it on my kitchen counter (where it got very little light.) Eight months later, I still don't think it had grown another leaf! I got the "bright" idea to put it in a sunny spot...

And I was hooked.

I love having living plants around to remind me that we serve a living God, who is often doing things "underneath the soil" that we can't see -- until it's the right time.

Thank you for posting! :)

That's what hotspot was made for. :D

Unless... You live in a place without good cell coverage. As little as a quarter mile further down my road and I would need a home internet connection too.

Y'all can have it. I'll stick with my home internet. Using some little cell screen is super annoying for me personally. To each their own.

I have a sign in my kitchen that says:

"Home is where they feed you"

At my friend's house and she offers me a snack? Feels like home. At my mom's house and she makes me dinner? Home. Camping and husband brings me a cooked weenie? Home.

That said, I dont like our house. I shouldn't complain because we do HAVE a house. But I don't like stairs (dangerous, some of the kids and i have fallen) and I would rather live in the country. I don't feel like any of our houses have ever really been "home" and I'm not sure any ever will until we are truly HOME.

I have a some things from my wife, kids and grandkids at my desk.

* Is it the memories you're surrounded by? (But what happens if you have to move?)

Memories go with you. A place is a place. People make a home. I've lived in dozens of places in my life, including several states.

* What meaningful things do you take with you everywhere you live? (Pictures, keepsakes, collections, a certain color, etc.?)

Whatever doesn't fall off the truck. There was a time when I minimized. Everything I had fit into a 9' x 11' room.

* If you had to start over in a new space, what would make it feel like "home" to you? (Setting up your kitchen or garage in a certain way; arranging your equipment for a favorite hobby, a certain decorating style, etc.?)

Emptying all of the boxes. My wife does the decorating.

* Have you ever had to live somewhere that didn't feel like home? How did you survive?

I had to live in my truck for a little while. Didn't really feel much like home. You adapt is how you survive. "This too shall pass."

* Are you someone who has never felt "at home"?

Not really.

Let's see home is where:

my dog is
I have everything I need to make as much tea as I want
And the really cool name poster my cousin got me some 25 or 30 years ago from China is ( big swoopy letters which are pictures (like the C in cinder may have a few decorative loops in it and be a dragon but it's still a C and the I might be a lighthouse but it's still an I).

As for what makes my parents house home (and the things I wouldn't allow to be sold when they pass):
It's mom's cedar chest and the rocker her maid of honor got her that has my parent's names and the date of their wedding stamped into the leather.

There's also the art that they spent money on before they had kids and that has hung on the walls of their house as long as I can remember. It probably wouldn't look like their home without that, but I'm not as attached to that.
