The Book of Revelation was written around 68-69 AD by the Apostle John on the Island of Patmos after the Emperor Nero exiled him for preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. There is some speculation that Emperor Domitian was the one that sent John to Patmos, but some evidences say otherwise.

It's really impossible to know exactly when John wrote 'The Book of Revelations'. Some surmise that it was done sooner than 69 AD, some later. Some even surmise that John wrote this Book around 43AD.

When you read Revelation, nowhere in the book does it state that John is in exile or imprisoned. He states that he is there for the Gospel. The tradition of John's exile was started by Augustine about 200 years after John lived. It appears that Revelation was written between A.D. 43-47. When was the book of Revelation written by the apostle John? - NeverThirsty

The bulk of traditional sources date the book to the reign of the Roman emperor Domitian (AD 81–96), which evidence tends to confirm.

In about A.D. 185, Irenaus wrote that the book of revelation was composed, “almost in our day, towards the end of Domitian’s reign.”10 Domitian reigned from A.D. 81-96, which is one of the reasons many scholars believe the book of Revelation was written by the Apostle John sometime in the 90’s. Thus, P98 was likely copied within about 100 years of the original autograph.

Revelation's prophet John is writing to us from the Early Church in c90-95 AD. An early fragment of John's Gospel from c135 AD gives us this date.

supposedly some from the mid 40's AD. but my post is just giving an example of how the Papyrus itself is used for the dating process because we know each time the process to make paper changed and when it changed.
Oh, so not gospel fragments. Just papyrus fragments. They would datable with carbon dating.

hi, jd :)

we call our son JD, too-- they're his first two initials. so i noticed your user name pretty much right away.

please forgive me for further derailing your thread. i know nothing about the topic but i was hoping you might be willing to answer this question for me.

what do you mean when you say you've accepted "the Choice taught by Jesus..."?

i've heard folks say lots of things, things that cause me concern for their souls. i hope you can sorta give me a little leeway here, because it's out of concern for you i'm writing. we don't know one another, and i don't want to assume anything about what you mean by that phrase. obviously, there's something bothering me and i'm sure you can tell.
would you mind very much explaining the Gospel to me?

if you've even read all this, i thank you, lol. welcome to CC! by God's grace i haven't made you sorry you joined. :giggle:

Hi. Thank you. When you go over all of Jesus' teachings, it is really just one thing that I call the Choice. Jesus did not teach complex doctrine, it was simple, easy to preach, easy to understand, easy to remember and something he repeats over and over, in different forms for sure, but always the same basic message. He was teaching to mostly illiterate folk in rural areas about God and their relationship to God and each other. It was also something unrelated to Judaism. That is what all of our best sources indicate.

if you find a piece of papri fragment on the web search and are able to enlarge it, you can see if it's been sewn. it's already glued, but they began sewing it around the 1st Century. so if you see these pieces of fragments with sewing thread through them, you know that method began 1st Century. which means, the writing had to be within the 1st Century. and it becomes easier to date because we know when they began sewing Papyrus leaves after the glued dried in this new process.
