What does music mean to you?

In talking with family today, we were discussing the power of music in some of our lives. It was interesting that it meant different things to different people.

What if anything does music mean to you?

Has it had an impact on your life?

Do you listen to it at certain times?

What kind of music do you listen to and has it changed over time?

I love calming melodious music. I like to listen while I'm relaxing. Music can minister to your heart. Even David played for Saul.

I Samuel 16: 14 But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him.
15 And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.
16 Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.
17 And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.
18 Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the Lord is with him.
19 Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, which is with the sheep.
20 And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul.
21 And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer.
22 And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight.
23 And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him

I love music, all sorts, from the 1950s until the early 90s. Even Taylor swift! So uplifting.

I didn't grow up, in my younger years, listening to a lot of music. But when we did it was usually the radio playing things like Journey and Foreigner. And growing up sometimes i'd listen to whatever was on the radio (80s baby). By the time i was a pre-teen i started getting into a little more pop, but also 80s hair bands. Getting into my teens i got more into 80s hair bands and left the pop behind.
Through my teens i went from 80s hair bands and graduated into heavier and heavier music until i got into the heaviest stuff i could find.
I also had outside interests in other genres, a little rap, punk, hardcore, etc... Through my 20s i continued this path without a lot of change. In my 30s i started expanding more and enjoying random things, such as Pat Boone doing lounge music covers of popular rock and metal.
Now i've further expanded my tastes. I have over 4000 albums. Everything from movie scores, to a multitude of metal subgenres, reggae, punk, industrial, 70s, 80s and 90s music. Rap, rockabilly, swing, 50s crooners and more. I dabble in a lot of things, except country. No. Not going to happen. And i avoid 99% of radio oriented music (rock and pop). I'm still metal in the middle, but i appreciate more than i have been able to in the past.

Music, if done right, is audible emotion. Songs are so powerful and so effective for expressing what one feels because they are words set to emotion.

That is also why a lot of songs fall flat and become just background noise. They are not made to express something a person feels. They are just churned out to sell more albums to make more money. It's fairly easy to tell the difference between a song written to express what is in the heart and a song manufactured to make a buck.

I love worship music and listen only to christian songs lately .For me it is powerful to worship the Lord

Music doesn’t mean anything to me, I just enjoy listening to it from across a huge expanse of time, styles and cultures. I know where I was in life when hearing a song from years gone by.

Music for me as changed throughout my life. As a child, I listened to what my parents listened to. Throughout school, I'd listen to whatever anyone had on (as long as it wasn't obnoxious).

As a young adult music really started to give me a headache. It didn't even matter what type it was. I think I was trying to separate the singing from the instruments. I'm not sure.

Anyway, I find it interesting because I was going through some things and I happened to turn the radio on to a Christian station and I felt like the Lord was speaking with my through a song. It helped me tremendously and since then have felt that on other occasions. I also haven't had anymore headaches when listening to music.

I love worship, that's probably my favorite time, listening and singing for the Lord.



My aunt mentioned how when she listens to music from her childhood, she really enjoys it, but without fail it depresses her. She said music really dictates her mood, so she has to be careful what she listens to.

If I want to move about and dance at home,I play oldies,rock,pop,and some alternative. If I need calm,I love easy listening instrumentals or classical! My radio in L. R. is on contemporary Christian 24/7. I love to worship to contemporary Christian and southern gospel. It is uplifting,promotes worship and invokes spiritual thoughts! I really like all sorts of music!
