According to the gospels, Jesus proclaimed this "Golden Ethic Rule":
Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. (Matthew 7:12)
This sounds like a fair way of living. And if not stated explicitly by Jesus, some of his teachings might be interpreted like "The Silver Rule":
"One should not treat other people in the manner in which one would not want to be treated by them."
Once again, fair enough. There's just one (big) problem: These rules don't survive long in real life.
Science tells us the truth. These rules of ethics can be simulated in a computer generated simulation game where the environments and facts of real life is modelled into the computer algorithm. The answer is depressing: However high the ethics of the golden and silver rules are, they are doomed to loose in a realistic simulated scenario. Think of it: The golden rule begs for someone with an evil mind, to take advantage of the naive attitude of these rules, and use these naive attitudes to destroy them. That's the rule of the game.
So, are you living 100% according to the golden rule? Sure of that? My guess is that no one - NO ONE - lives according to the golden rule a whole lifetime. If so, you will get abused in some sort of manner, sooner or later. So then - what to do? Follow Jesus or follow science ?
Please let me introduce the Bronze rule, which I personally follow. It runs like this:
1: Start being kind to your peer.
2: Then respond like your peer does. If your peer is kind, be kind back. If he is mean, be mean back.
3: Continue and repeat from step 2.
When this rule is simulated, it has a success rate MUCH higher than the golden/silver rules. It will survive. You might ask why? Because it has a feedback mechanism, which the golden rule lacks. It takes the facts of life seriously, and not in a naive manner.
So if you want to survive for a long time, you should consider living according to the bronze rule rather than the golden rule.
