Worship is perhaps the most amazing and life giving thing a believer can do in their walk with God but to worship in spirit and truth what does that mean?
For me it is to worship with all your might when you really worship the father your body cannot stop dancing your voice cannot be loud enough your hands cannot raise high enough and your heart cannot express enough

But this term is something Jesus used but I have never heard of any explanation for it

What you described is one aspect of worshipping in spirit. The Psalms teach us to worship God with all that is within us. And that is part of true worship.
Worshipping in truth concerns itself with worshipping according to the way God has prescribed in scripture.

Worship is described in the teachings of Paul in Romans 12:

TOP #54: Spiritual worship consists of offering one’s body to God as a living sacrifice of service. [Rom. 12:1]

TOP #55: Believers should renew their minds so that they will appreciate God’s good, pleasing and perfect will. [Rom. 12:2]

TOP #56: Believers have various gifts or functions in the body of Christ. [Rom. 12:3-8] These gifts include prophesying, serving, teaching, encouraging, charity, leadership and showing mercy. Spiritual gifts are also listed in 1Cor. 12:4-11.

At this point Paul gives several brief commands, which are worth listing separately.

TOP #57: Love one another, hate what is evil and cling to what is good. [Rom. 12:9-10] 1Thes. 5:21 says to test everything, hold on to the good, and avoid every evil.

TOP #58: Maintain zeal or fervor while serving the Lord. [Rom. 12:11] This attitude or emotion is called the Spirit’s fire in 1Thes. 5:19.

TOP #59: Be joyful in hope and patient in affliction. [Rom. 12:12a] This is akin to Phil. 4:4&10-13, where patience is described as being content whatever the circumstances.

TOP #60: Be faithful in prayer. [Rom. 12:12b] Paul also encouraged prayer in 1Thes. 5:17&25.

TOP #61: Share with believers in need. [Rom. 12:13a] This is stated in Eph. 4: 28 as working to earn something to share.

TOP #62: Practice hospitality. [Rom. 12:13b] This is mentioned also in 1Pet. 4:9 & 3John v.8. It is enjoined for church leaders in 1Tim. 3:2 and Tit. 1:8. Such help enabled house churches to meet (Rom. 16:23) and missionaries to spread the Gospel (Acts 28:7).

TOP #63: Bless those who persecute you and overcome evil with good. [Rom. 12:14&19-21] This is reminiscent of Jesus saying that believers are blessed and rewarded in heaven when they are persecuted (Matt. 5:11, cf. 1Pet. 2:19-21).

TOP #64: Have empathy and live in harmony. [Rom. 12:15-16a &18] Peace and unity rather than arguing and divisiveness is a theme in Paul’s epistles, and James addressed this in Jam. 4:1-2. Jesus prayed that believers would be one in John 17:23.

TOP #65: Do not be proud or conceited, unwilling to associate with those in a lower social class. [Rom. 12:16b] James also spoke about this in Jam. 2:1-7.

The context of this passage is John 4:21-24:

"Jesus said to her, 'Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.' "

He's explaining to the woman that no longer will it matter where you worship; true worship is of the heart and the spirit. I don't see anything here that justifies wild displays during praise and worship; if your heart's in it God recognizes you, no matter if you're still and quiet or loud and animated.

The first thing to do would be to understand the words being translated as "worship".

The one you're referencing means to "bow in obeisance" and in essence is reverent submission to authority, to bow the knee - here's the BDAG Lexicon definition: to express in attitude or gesture one’s complete dependence on or submission to a high authority figure, (fall down and) worship, do obeisance to, prostrate oneself before, do reverence to, welcome respectfully,

The John4 verses you're referencing may be the most highly-emphasized statement by Jesus Christ in the entire NC and begins the new era.

It's the most-used word in the NC being translated as "worship" - it's also what satan tried to get Jesus to do towards him.

Turning this into wild, emotional displays misses the point.

The other 2 words being translated as "worship" mean "to do service" and "to express in gestures, rites, or ceremonies one’s allegiance or devotion to deity"

The reason that I worship, is to admit I have surrendered completely to the All mighty glory and power. I give thanks for everything that I can see and understand, and cannot see and understand that Lord provided for me and guided me into them. I give up on my fleshly desires and conclusions and trust my Shepherd [psalm 23:1] completely. To pledge my very essence of existance to our Father and ask him to guide me as he will. To ask the Lord to show me the next steps. I admit to him, that I'm weak and will go astray if Lord does not cast his light on my path. When I kneel and cry my heart out and pray, I feel something is not like always. My body starts to shiver and weakens. I feel like I'm not alone at that moment, and he will give my prayers to say.

Personally, I think "worship in spirit" means to leave yourself, and surrend to the incomprehensible love and care of the Lord. Thats when you follow what the Holy Spirit gives to you to say for prayer.

As I now see, it is not of flesh and blood my first birth ever from man and woman having sex
It is from God Farther and Son as won for us all on that cross. To given new life in Father's Spirit and Truth guiding us through Son being risen for us. We, me learn to listen and agree with God over my self and or anyone else. Phil 3 thanks good post Brother

The Spirit has the role of leads to obey the Torah (Ezekiel 36:26-27), the Torah is truth (Psalm 119:142), and the Torah is how the Israelites know how to worship God in spirit and in truth.

But we aren't Israelites; we are Christians.

I think you missed the point of Jesus' words... completely.

worship can also mean to copy and to imitate. Christ wants those the Father sends to Him to follow Him, we follow by doing what Christ did, live as He did, copy, imitate His way of life, copy His nature, His mind.

This is something was studying recently. I may have to post again, this is what I can recall from memory.

Keep in mind the woman at the well was living in adultery. So she wasn’t being honest about how she “worshiped”. The problem is not where they worshiped but how they worshiped and if they did it the way God requires.

The word “spirit” has several meanings one of which is “physical body”. This can be worshipping with or body and/or or physical actions. “Truth” means true, right, pure etc…

Worship and Worthship
  • Origin: The word "worship" is derived from the Old English word weorþscipe or "worth-ship".
  • Meaning: It literally means "to give worth" or to demonstrate value.
  • Application: It is the act of ascribing the highest worth or honor to God.
Worth-ship, the shipping of worth.

The highest form of worship, the shipping of worth is the giving of money in secret. Money is one of the highest forms of worth acknowledged in this world we live in. That doesn't all of the sudden change in our relationship with God.

Just ask those who were at Pentecost.

Or the woman with the alabaster box.

Jesus said, where ever this gospel is preached tell what this woman did.

He put the giving of her valuable ointment on the same levels Hos work on the cross.

And I bet when she gave it her head and face were covered, and done in secret.

Scripture with defined words, please.
