Perhaps they read Daniels writings (when he was exiled in Babylon, which was conquered by the Medes/Persians) and believed them.
i would think they were well read in all the Hebrew scriptures.

Sometimes it seems Christians are less tolerant towards their own.
He calls them hypocrites, thats a person that says one thing and does another. i dont thnk they were misteaching the scripture, they were manipulating their positions of power for their own personal agendas, church leaders still do it to this day.
Matthew 23:3
so do and observe whatever they tell you, but not the works they do. For they preach, but do not practice.
here Jesus says do what they teach, dont do what they do. if what they taught was wrong it makes little sense for Jesus to command people to obey it.
Are you referring to the scrbes and pharisees?...who weren't really 'His own'Jesus wasnt very tolerant to His own.
500-1000 years later the church was less tolerant to its own burning thousand of Christians every year.
Jesus practiced what He taught, the middle age bishops and cardinals lived in lavish homes at the poor persons expense.
the fruits define the teacher.
I agree, the Lord's is truly an important example to always take into account. He did seem to act more harshly in regard to the leaders of the people who were false teachers (like many of the Pharisees were), of course.
~Deut
I can bring one example after another showing they were false teachers...
Mark 7:9-13 NASB
[9] He was also saying to them, "You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition. [10] For Moses said, 'Honor YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER'; and, 'He WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER, IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH'; [11] but you say, 'If a man says to his father or his mother, whatever I have that would help you is Corban (that is to say, given to God),' [12] you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or his mother; [13] thus invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that."

Paul writes in Romans that many pagans or gentiles, have teh truth written on their hearts with their own conscience accusing or excusing them as they act. For me this has alway been a strong warning not to judge others, but this does not translate we accept any other faith tha that delivered to us by the Holy Spirit.I've been dealing with this issue for a while now. Several family and friends on FB have pointed this out to me. So I'd like some Biblical opinions,Scripture verses would be a big help on the subject of tolerance of other religions and beliefs. I don't think people understand what is meant by tolerance and a key word the follows is "acceptance". I think Christians are being deceived on this issue. So I'd appreciate if anyone could enlighten me to where the Bible says tolerate or accept other religious views and beliefs. Thank you.

im talking about mainstream Judaism at the time of Jesus which was the pharisee school of thought.
Then why did Jesus say do what they teach if what they taught was false? And how could they be hypocrites if they taught the same evil they lived? Doesn't make sense.I already showed where they had false teachingand contradicted Abraham and Moses.
That's not what Jesus said. He told them to observe what they bid. This held true until the New Testament was instituted. In the Book of Acts, they no longer observed what they bid unless it was for conscience sake. Then why did Jesus say do what they teach if what they taught was false? like the pharisees, sons of the devil? according to Jesus they were excellent teachers but had no works (actions).
give me an example of a good action thats a deception.
Excellent teachers to lead you into eternal damnationExcellent teachers......He said they make two fold the sons of hell by their indoctrination.........and called them blind leaders of the blind.......what bible are you reading
Im reading the Bible that had Jesus saying do what they teach, the Bible that calls them experts of the law.Excellent teachers......He said they make two fold the sons of hell by their indoctrination.........and called them blind leaders of the blind.......what bible are you reading

Im not sure on that. He says do what they teach, not what they do and follows with they preach but don't practice. That sounds very plain that it was their works that was at fault and not their teachings. That's not what Jesus said. He told them to observe what they bid. This held true until the New Testament was instituted. In the Book of Acts, they no longer observed what they bid unless it was for conscience sake.
Matthew 23:2-3 KJV
[2] Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat: [3] All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.
Acts 5:27-29,41-42 KJV
[27] And when they had brought them, they set them before the council: and the high priest asked them, [28] Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man's blood upon us. [29] Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men. [41] And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name. [42] And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.
If they taught evil and did evil they would not be hypocritesObviously you misunderstand what he was saying.....because he does not contradict himself....
Blind leaders of the blind
Hypocrites
Teaching for the commandments of God the traditions of men
Making two fold the children of hell
Generation of vipers and snakes <--John's view
So which is it.........
Some good answes here, just want to add one thingI've been dealing with this issue for a while now. Several family and friends on FB have pointed this out to me.
