Greetings :)

I have a question regarding Hebrews 4:12:

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

- Hebrews 4:12 (KJV)

Is the passage in Hebrews 4:12 about the inspired Book we call the Bible?

or

Is it about the Incarnate Word (Jesus Christ) who was with God in the beginning?

Verse 12 is about the entire Bible -- which is in fact the inspired the Word of God. God uses His Word to search hearts since He speaks through His Word. The Gospel is also the Word of God, and the Holy Spirit uses the Gospel to convict and convince the lost to obey the Gospel.

But verse 13 is more complex. It may either be a reference to Christ or the Holy Spirit or even God Himself. Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

And the two verses are actually tied together.

Awesome answer. …and then verse 14 connects with verse 13, Christ Jesus being our great high priest.Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.”

Genesis 3:24
So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

Revelation 1:16
And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.

Revelation 19:15
And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

The sword is the tongue.Or Word of God.The bottom of the skull, our jaw area is like in the image of east of the garden of Eden,or the temple court.
The skull itself is like the temple, and within it is the Ark of the Covenant.

At the time of the Two Witnesses the temple court is given unto the gentiles forty and two months.Meaning the 144,000 will give testimony of the Two Witnesses with the Sword of the Spirit.

Malachi 4:2-3
But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall. And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the LORD of hosts.

Hello Selahsays, v12 is in reference (most directly, at least) to the Bible. I think that because of the prior context in Chapter 4, and, simply, because of what the verse itself says. Take the opening phrase of v12, for instance, which, if it was speaking about the Lord Jesus instead of the Bible, would say "For Jesus is alive (quick) and powerful......", which, right off the bat, is something that never needs to be said about Him, obviously.

You know, I remember a comment, by theologian, Ligon Duncan, that is somewhat related to this thread topic (which he made in the move, The God Who Speaks), that one of the reasons that He was certain that the Bible was truly the word of God was because it was a Book that, although thousands of years old, was able to perfectly diagnose the sinful condition of his (and of everyone else's) heart today.

BTW, if you've not watched The God Who Speaks yet, I HIGHLY recommend it (y)(y) Here are links to both the trailer and to the movie itself, if you'd care to check one or both of them out :) The cast is a group of well-known theologians, pastors, historians, linguists and apologists, and the cinematography is simply BEAUTIFUL (and what is taught is very important).

Thank you so much, David. I'm going to spend some time listening to "The God Who Speaks" today. What a priceless gift our Father's words are to us; He gave us the Bible so we could hear Him. “It is written.”

But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Thank you, @Deuteronomy (David) for this great testimony to the authority of God’s letter to us. As one scholar reminded us, if we love the Author, we will love His words. We will never be bored by them, never fail to be corrected and encouraged by them, never fail to keep them in our hearts and minds as we follow the path He lights for is. He (and all He declares to us through scripture) is our delight.

Thank you @GRACE_ambassador for the link to your study. It will be a pleasure to contemplate. :) Also thanks for the link in your signature to Il Divo’s Amazing Grace. It’s one of the most beautiful versions I’ve ever heard. The third verse actually gave me chills!

look at Hebrews how it begins

The law and the prophets were until John:

since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭16:16‬ ‭

God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, ( ot)

hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, ( nt )whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭1:1-2‬ ‭KJV‬‬

It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.”
‭‭John‬ ‭6:63, 68-69‬ ‭

“For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.”
‭‭John‬ ‭5:22, 24‬ ‭

“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭4:12-14‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Jesus word specifically

“He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.”
‭‭John‬ ‭12:48-50‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

……Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.”
‭‭John‬ ‭8:31-32 , 54

“Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭13:31‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Hebrews is trying to convince the reader that the old covenant Moses and the prophets has been fulfilled and the New Testament word of Jesus sthe son has come

My point is it’s constantly comparing the new word with the old that part is about Jesus word the living word that we’re told to believe not the word we’re told “ if you keep it perfectly you’ll live if you break it you’ll die “

The word that says hear and believe me and I’ll save you ….jesus word is internal it works in us

“ thou shalt not commit adultery “ is a rule for a rule breaker

But this works in is believers by faith and won’t lead to adultery

“Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:

but I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭5:27-28‬ ‭KJV‬‬

We want the word that is discerning that’s going to stop us from listing and eventually commiting sin ……can change us internally “ don’t hate anyone don’t hold grudges forgive ……we sin when we hold grudges and hate and lust and plot …..the nt word is able to change us inside it is a discerner of the thoughts and intents
